The search for equality: representations of the smoking act among adolescent women
It is a qualitative research, carried out with 14 female adolescents in 2005. A semi-structured interview and a socioeconomic survey were used to collect data. Results evidenced adolescents know the biomedical discourse, which proposes that smoking causes serious consequences to health. However, there are other symbolic reasons that influence its use such as the search for equality and image, since they think men find smoking women more attractive and mature. Peer pressure represents an important factor for women to smoke by validating its practice and minimizing its effects to the body
Association of radio polar cap brightening with bright patches and coronal holes
Radio-bright regions near the solar poles are frequently observed in Nobeyama
Radioheliograph (NoRH) maps at 17 GHz, and often in association with coronal
holes. However, the origin of these polar brightening has not been established
yet. We propose that small magnetic loops are the source of these bright
patches, and present modeling results that reproduce the main observational
characteristics of the polar brightening within coronal holes at 17 GHz. The
simulations were carried out by calculating the radio emission of the small
loops, with several temperature and density profiles, within a 2D coronal hole
atmospheric model. If located at high latitudes, the size of the simulated
bright patches are much smaller than the beam size and they present the
instrument beam size when observed. The larger bright patches can be generated
by a great number of small magnetic loops unresolved by the NoRH beam. Loop
models that reproduce bright patches contain denser and hotter plasma near the
upper chromosphere and lower corona. On the other hand, loops with increased
plasma density and temperature only in the corona do not contribute to the
emission at 17 GHz. This could explain the absence of a one-to-one association
between the 17 GHz bright patches and those observed in extreme ultraviolet.
Moreover, the emission arising from small magnetic loops located close to the
limb may merge with the usual limb brightening profile, increasing its
brightness temperature and width.Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures, 1 table. Accepted for publication in The

Pollen storage by stingless bees as an environmental marker for metal contamination : spatial and temporal distribution of metal elements.
Since the middle of the 20th century, human activities have led to overall
ecosystem contamination and to major modifications in landscape structure
and composition. Mining activities represent a major source of environmental
contamination by metal residues. The objective of our study was to evaluate
the presence of heavy metals and other elements on stingless bee pollen, and
compare them to samples of Suspended Particulate Material (SPM) in five
points a Mineral Province, in Brazil. More than 50 elements were identified
by ICP-OES and ICP-MS, after microwave digestion. Overall, we found a strong
relation among elements present on pollen and SPM. Samples from the four
areas exhibited higher levels of minerals compared to the reference site.
Mineral levels varied widely within the two seasonal periods. Some elements,
like Pb, Cd, As, Cu, Zn, and Fe were found at levels considered potentially toxic
to human health. Pollen stored by stingless bees was a successful bioindicator,
and demonstrated the value of quantitative ecological information for
detecting air pollution
Insulin lispro is a human insulin analog of rapid onset of action and duration, which mimics the physiological insulin profile after a meal. We have evaluated the safety and efficacy of lispro insulin in comparison with human regular insulin in a crossover, multicenter, randomized trial in 25 type 1 diabetic patients in use of human NPH and regular insulin (median age = 16 years). After administration of lispro or regular insulin for 2 months, the patients were transferred for the other insulin for two more months, maintaining the basal NPH insulin regimen. There was no difference in the postprandial glucose excursion and glycated hemoglobin A1c comparing the 2 groups (lispro and regular). The relative percentage decrease in glycemia was significantly greater with lispro insulin after lunch, in the first phase of the study (p<0.02). The total number of hypo-glycemic episodes was not different comparing both groups. However, there was a significant difference in the nocturnal hypoglycemia incidence with initial administration of lispro (p<0.05). With initial administration of regular insulin, there was an increase in the incidence of nocturnal hypoglycemia (p=0.038), with a subsequent reduction of hypoglycemia with insulin lispro (p=0.04). In the end of the study, 68% of the patients referred preference and better feeling with lispro, compared to regular insulin. Insulin lispro was a safe and efficacious option, with lower incidence of nocturnal hypoglycemia in type 1 diabetics. An optimization of the basal insulin regimen is necessary to improve glucose control with the use of rapid-action insulin.
Evaluation of matrix effect on the determination of rare earth elements and As, Bi, Cd, Pb, Se and In in honey and pollen of native Brazilian bees (Tetragonisca angustula ? Jata?) by Q-ICP-MS.
Bees are considered the main pollinators in natural and agricultural environments. Chemical elements from
honey and pollen have been used for monitoring the environment, the health of bees and the quality of their
products. Nevertheless, there are not many studies on honey and pollen of native Brazilian bees. The goal of this
work was to determine important chemical elements (Sc, Y, La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Lu and
Yb) along with As, Bi, Cd, Pb, Se and In, in honey and pollen of native Brazilian bees, assessing analytical
interferences from the matrix. A proposed analytical method was developed for these elements by quadrupole
ICP-MS. Matrix effect was verified in honey matrix in the quantification of As, Bi and Dy; and in pollen matrix
for Bi, Cd, Ce, Gd, La, Pb and Sc. The quality of the method was considered satisfactory taking into
consideration the recovery rate of each element in the spiked solutions: honey matrix (91.6?103.9%) and pollen
matrix (94.1?115.6%). The quantification limits of the method ranged between 0.00041 and 10.3 ?g L?1 for
honey and 0.00041?0.095 ?g L?1 for pollen. The results demonstrate that the method is accurate, precise and
suitable
Atividades biológicas de espécies amazônicas de Rubiaceae
Rubiaceae is a plant family with great chemical and biological potential. In this work a phytochemical prospection was performed and it was assessed the cytotoxic, antioxidant and antifungal activities of dichloromethanic and methanolic extracts of the leaves of Duroia saccifera, Ferdinandusa goudotiana, F. hirsuta, F. paraensis, Ferdinandusa sp., Palicourea corymbifera and P. guianensis. The cytotoxicity evaluation was carried out using the test toxicity on Artemia salina. The antifungal activity was determined by agar diffusion method using fungi: Epidermophyton floccosum, Microsporum canis 32905, M. gipseum 29/00, Trichophyton mentagrophytes ATCC 9533/03, T. rubrum ATCC 28189, T. tonsurans 21/97, Cladosporium cladosporioides, C. sphaerospermum, Fusarium U. 662/06, Scytalidium U. 661/06, Candida albicans ATCC 3632 and C. albicans U. 5/99. The antioxidant activity was determined by testing the amount of free radical 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and the discoloration of the radical cation 6-sulfonic acid-2,2-azinobis-3-ethylbenzothiazoline (ABTS). For the toxicity test on A. salina greater toxicity in the methanol extract of F. goudotiana was observed, which proved to be toxic up to a concentration of 5 μg mL-1. The presence of antifungal principles was observed in the F. hirsuta and F. paraensis against four tested fungi. In the evaluation of the antioxidant activity, the methanol extracts showed greater activity than the dichloromethanic ones, being similar the obtained result through both methods (reduction of DDPH and ABTS decolorization). The results create possibilities for future researches related to the structure and activity of the components of each active extract. © 2015, Instituto de Biociencias. All rights reserved
Quando realizado em pacientes bem selecionados, resulta em desfechos clínicos e hemodinâmicos satisfatórios.ABSTRACTBackgroundRecent studies have demonstrated the efficacy of the transcatheter valve‐in‐valve implantation for the treatment of bioprosthesis dysfunction in high‐risk surgical patients. This study presents the initial experience with valve‐in‐valve implantation.MethodsClinical, echocardiographic, and procedural profiles were characterized, and the mid‐term results of patients with surgical bioprosthesis dysfunction submitted to valve‐in‐valve implantation in the aortic position were reported.ResultsSeven male patients were included, aged 72.6 ± 10.0 years. The STS score was 9,6 ± 10,5%, and the logistic EuroSCORE was 22.7 ± 14.7%. Three patients had combined aortic bioprosthesis failure; two had isolated regurgitation; and two had isolated stenosis. The transfemoral access was used in six cases, and the transapical access in one case. Implanted devices included Sapien XT (n = 5) and CoreValve (n = 2) prostheses. Procedural success was achieved in six (85.7%) cases. After the procedure, the mean gradient decreased from 38.2 ± 9.6mmHg to 20.9 ± 5.9mmHg, and the valve area increased from 1.2 ± 0.4cm2 to 1.5 ± 0.5cm2. After 1 year, there were no deaths and no other significant adverse outcomes; 80% of patients were in NYHA functional class I/II. The transvalvular gradients and valve area remained unchanged in this period.ConclusionsThe valve‐in‐valve procedure was effective in most high‐risk surgical patients with bioprosthesis dysfunction. When performed in well‐selected patients, it results in satisfactory clinical and hemodynamic outcomes

Urinary incontinence related to perineal muscle strength in the first trimester of pregnancy: cross-sectional study
Objective To analyze pelvic floor muscle strength (PFMS), urinary continence and quality of life related to urinary incontinence (UI) of women in the first trimester of pregnancy. Method Cross-sectional study with a sample of 500 women who started prenatal care in a complementary healthcare facility in Guarulhos, state of São Paulo, from 2012 and 2013. Pelvic floor muscle strength was evaluated through perineometry. The pregnant women who presented UI answered the International Consultation on Incontinence Questionnaire-Short Form (ICIQ-SF). Results It was found that maternal age (OR=1.06; CI95% 1.02-1.11) and prior UI (OR=15.12; 95%CI 8.19-27.92) are the variables that, in tandem, best explain the occurrence of UI at the beginning of pregnancy. The mean score on the ICIQ-SF was 8.2 (SD=3.9), considered a moderate impact on quality of life. Conclusion Older pregnant women with prior UI are more likely to have UI in the first trimester of pregnancy.
