    Agitation for the development of the western phosphate field as part of the national program of conservation and economic rehabilitation has, in the last three years, focused public attention on the phosphate reserves of Idaho, Montana, Wyoming and Utah. In every conference or discussion on this subject, the minds of Utah\u27s representatives have naturally turned to the question, What is Utah\u27s share in this great natural resource? Obviously nature pays no heed to political boundaries, and neither does the prosperity of Utah\u27s citizens depend solely upon that which is circumscribed within the state\u27s boundaries. Nonetheless, it is necessary for Utahns to measure their own natural resources, that they may be prepared to participate in any possible future development that will benefit not only their state, but the whole Rocky Mountain region

    The effectiveness of combining rolling deformation with wire-arc additive manufacture on β-Grain refinement and texture modification in Ti-6Al-4V

    In Additive Manufacture (AM), with the widely used titanium alloy Ti–6Al–4V, the solidification conditions typically result in undesirable, coarse-columnar, primary β grain structures. This can result in a strong texture and mechanical anisotropy in AM components. Here, we have investigated the efficacy of a new approach to promote β grain refinement in Wire–Arc Additive Manufacture (WAAM) of large scale parts, which combines a rolling step sequentially with layer deposition. It has been found that when applied in-process, to each added layer, only a surprisingly low level of deformation is required to greatly reduce the β grain size. From EBSD analysis of the rolling strain distribution in each layer and reconstruction of the prior β grain structure, it has been demonstrated that the normally coarse centimetre scale columnar β grain structure could be refined down to < 100 μm. Moreover, in the process both the β and α phase textures were substantially weakened to close to random. It is postulated that the deformation step causes new β orientations to develop, through local heterogeneities in the deformation structure, which act as nuclei during the α → β transformation that occurs as each layer is re-heated by the subsequent deposition pass

    Residual stress of as-deposited and rolled Wire + Arc Additive Manufacturing Ti–6Al–4V components

    Wire + arc additive manufacturing components contain significant residual stresses, which manifest in distortion. High-pressure rolling was applied to each layer of a linear Ti–6Al–4V wire + arc additive manufacturing component in between deposition passes. In rolled specimens, out-of-plane distortion was more than halved; a change in the deposits' geometry due to plastic deformation was observed and process repeatability was increased. The Contour method of residual stresses measurements showed that although the specimens still exhibited tensile stresses (up to 500 MPa), their magnitude was reduced by 60%, particularly at the interface between deposit and substrate. The results were validated with neutron diffraction measurements, which were in good agreement away from the baseplate

    Steps towards evidence-based foot-care for children:behaviour and opinions of health professionals

    Allied health professionals (AHPs) working with children need the appropriate knowledge, skills and experiences to provide high-quality care. This includes using research to drive improvements in care and ensuring that knowledge and practices are consistent and build upon the best available evidence. The aim of this work was to understand more about the shared behaviours and opinions of health professionals supporting children's foot health care; how they find information that is both relevant to their clinical practice as well as informing the advice they share. A qualitative design using semi-structured, one-to-one, telephone interviews with AHPs was adopted. Thematic analysis was used to generate meaning, identify patterns and develop themes from the data. Eight interviews were conducted with physiotherapists, podiatrists and orthotists. Five themes were identified relating to health professionals: (a) Engaging with research; (b) Power of experience; (c) Influence of children's footwear companies; (d). Dr Google - the new expert and (e) Referral pathways for children's foot care. The findings indicate that the AHPs adopted a number of strategies to develop and inform their own professional knowledge and clinical practice. There could be barriers to accessing information, particularly in areas where there is limited understanding or gaps in research. The availability of online foot health information was inconsistent and could impact on how AHPs were able to engage with parents during consultations. [Abstract copyright: © 2020 The Authors.     Extraordinarily high biomass benthic community on Southern Ocean seamounts

    We describe a previously unknown assemblage of seamount-associated megabenthos that has by far the highest peak biomass reported in the deep-sea outside of vent communities. The assemblage was found at depths of 2-2.5 km on rocky geomorphic features off the southeast coast of Australia, in an area near the Sub-Antarctic Zone characterised by high rates of surface productivity and carbon export to the deep-ocean. These conditions, and the taxa in the assemblage, are widely distributed around the Southern mid-latitudes, suggesting the high-biomass assemblage is also likely to be widespread. The role of this assemblage in regional ecosystem and carbon dynamics and its sensitivities to anthropogenic impacts are unknown. The discovery highlights the lack of information on deep-sea biota worldwide and the potential for unanticipated impacts of deep-sea exploitation

    Critical appraisal of the role of davunetide in the treatment of progressive supranuclear palsy

    Progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) is a rare neurodegenerative disease characterized by the accumulation of tau protein aggregates in the basal ganglia, brainstem and cerebral cortex leading to rapid disease progression and death. The neurofibrillary tangles that define the neuropathology of PSP are comprised of aggregated 4R tau and show a well-defined distribution. Classically, PSP is diagnosed by symptoms that include progressive gait disturbance, early falls, vertical ophthalmoparesis, akinetic-rigid features, prominent bulbar dysfunction and fronto-subcortical dementia. There are currently no effective therapies for the treatment of this rapidly degenerating and debilitating disease. Davunetide is a novel neuroprotective peptide that is thought to impact neuronal integrity and cell survival through the stabilization of microtubules. Preclinical activity in models of tauopathy has been translated to clinical studies, demonstrating pharmacologic activity that has supported further development. Davunetide’s efficacy and tolerability are being tested in a placebo-controlled study in PSP patients, making it the most advanced drug candidate in this indication. This review examines the disease characteristics of PSP, the rationale for treating PSP with davunetide and assesses some of the challenges of clinical trials in this patient population
