Neglected patellar tendon rupture: a case of reconstruction without quadriceps lengthening

Neglected rupture of the patellar tendon is a rare, can be easily missed in a group of patients. We present a 24 year old, male patient who sustained right femoral diaphyseal and tibial plateau fractures and a patellar tendon rupture following a motor vehicle accident. The fractures were treated by open reduction internal fixation but the patellar tendon rupture was missed and the diagnosis was delayed by 7 months. Patella was migrated proximally. It was moved distally to the original location and neglected patellar tendon rupture treated successfully with modified Ecker technique. Neither preoperative traction nor additional intraoperative procedures were performed to relocate the patella to its anatomic position in the extended knee and good functional result was achieved with intensive rehabilitation

What Do Professional Forecasters Actually Predict?

In this paper we study what professional forecasters actually explain. We use spectral analysis and state space modeling to decompose economic time series into a trend, a business-cycle, and an irregular component. To examine which components are captured by professional forecasters we regress their forecasts on the estimated components extracted from both the spectral analysis and the state space model. For both decomposition methods we find that the Survey of Professional Forecasters can predict almost all variation in the time series due to the trend and the business-cycle, but the forecasts contain little information about the variation in the irregular component

Projecting the Medium-Term: Outcomes and Errors for GDP Growth

The focus of this paper is the evaluation of a very popular method for potential output estimation and medium-term forecasting - the production function approach - in terms of predictive performance. For this purpose, a forecast evaluation for the three to five years ahead predictions of GDP growth for the individual G7 countries is conducted. To carry out the forecast performance check a particular testing framework is derived that allows the computation of robust test statistics given the specific nature of the generated out-of sample forecasts. In addition, medium-term GDP projections from national and international institutions are examined and it is assessed whether these projections convey a reliable view about future economic developments and whether there is scope for improving their predictive content

Evaluation of the lateral dynamics of complex articulated commercial vehicles

By increasing the overall length and weight of commercial vehicles, the transport efficiency and road utilization will be improved and the C02 emissions can be reduced by some 30%. Over the past years experiments are carried out in the Netherlands with special vehicle combinations having an overall length of up to 25.25 meter and a total mass of up to 60 tons. Since these vehicles are typically intended for long distance road transport, they are not allowed (or only with additional abatements) to drive through villages, cities or on local roads. Furthermore it can be noted that roll-over of conventional commercial vehicles is already a major issue on the densely populated roads of the Netherlands. This marked the starting point of a simulation study, which was executed at the Eindhoven University of Technology. The aim is to investigate the behaviour of these new vehicle combinations, with an emphasis on the lateral dynamics at high forward velocities (highway driving)
