The state of emergency declared in April of 2020 in relation to the novel Coronavirus disease presented new challenges for three-dimensional art education. Universities were required to provide activities with practical skills and training, while infection risks were to be avoided. Universities that conducted practical skill classes of three-dimensional works such as sculpture and ceramic art explored practical class contents, preparations and teaching methods with the purpose of providing education that was equivalent to face-to-face class in terms of quality. After trial and error, online courses including practical training were conducted. The author examined the effectiveness of online classes with questionnaire surveys conducted by the Japan Society for Ceramic Art and Education. Consequently, outcomes and challenges of online practical class of three-dimensional art works such as sculpture and ceramic art were elucidated and these findings enhanced the quality of subsequent online classes

Sculpture and third-dimensional training course opportunities for art teachers in secondary education evidently show important knowledge acquisitions for students seeking to become teachers. Students are found to have firsthand experience with diverse expressions and materials, a necessary learning objective. Fields of sculpture art and craft art, in particular, have a significant relation between art works and materials. Therefore, it is necessary to have a thorough understanding of the characteristics of these fields. The present study examines works and results of assignment submissions of students who attended the course, focusing on classroom practices, with the theme of public art, “Seminar in Carvings and Sculptures”, that were held by the School of Education, Hiroshima University. Furthermore, the present study found outcomes and challenges, and suggested further possibilities of public art subjects using ceramic materials

An important subject in the study of education is which teaching materials should be used to facilitate art appreciation during the limited time available in school. Few studies have focused, however, on the optimization of teaching materials for art appreciation. For this reason, we undertook a study to find out what kinds of teaching materials are appropriate for each of the nine developmental stages in education. In the study, we showed three different kinds of pictures to students and collated the feedback that they provided, analyzing the information from both qualitative and quantitative perspectives. The results provided us with insights into the cognitive tendencies of students in relation to art materials at each developmental stage as well as the kinds of teaching materials that are appropriate for art appreciation in school
