    Large electroweak penguin contribution in B -> K pi and pi pi decay modes

    We discuss about a possibility of large electroweak penguin contribution in B -> K pi and pi pi from recent experimental data. The experimental data may be suggesting that there are some discrepancies between the data and theoretical estimation in the branching ratios of them. In B -> K pi decays, to explain it, a large electroweak penguin contribution and large strong phase differences seem to be needed. The contributions should appear also in B -> pi pi. We show, as an example, a solution to solve the discrepancies in both B -> K pi and B -> pi pi. However the magnitude of the parameters and the strong phase estimated from experimental data are quite large compared with the theoretical estimations. It may be suggesting some new physics effects are including in these processes. We will have to discuss about the dependence of the new physics. To explain both modes at once, we may need large electroweak penguin contribution with new weak phases and some SU(3) breaking effects by new physics in both QCD and electroweak penguin type processes.Comment: 23 pages, 9 figure

    Instability of Myelin Tubes under Dehydration: deswelling of layered cylindrical structures

    We report experimental observations of an undulational instability of myelin figures. Motivated by this, we examine theoretically the deformation and possible instability of concentric, cylindrical, multi-lamellar membrane structures. Under conditions of osmotic stress (swelling or dehydration), we find a stable, deformed state in which the layer deformation is given by \delta R ~ r^{\sqrt{B_A/(hB)}}, where B_A is the area compression modulus, B is the inter-layer compression modulus, and h is the repeat distance of layers. Also, above a finite threshold of dehydration (or osmotic stress), we find that the system becomes unstable to undulations, first with a characteristic wavelength of order \sqrt{xi d_0}, where xi is the standard smectic penetration depth and d_0 is the thickness of dehydrated region.Comment: 5 pages + 3 figures [revtex 4

    Interplay Between Time-Temperature-Transformation and the Liquid-Liquid Phase Transition in Water

    We study the TIP5P water model proposed by Mahoney and Jorgensen, which is closer to real water than previously-proposed classical pairwise additive potentials. We simulate the model in a wide range of deeply supercooled states and find (i) the existence of a non-monotonic ``nose-shaped'' temperature of maximum density line and a non-reentrant spinodal, (ii) the presence of a low temperature phase transition, (iii) the free evolution of bulk water to ice, and (iv) the time-temperature-transformation curves at different densities.Comment: RevTeX4, 4 pages, 4 eps figure

    Opportunities to demonstrate expertise and job satisfaction of community pharmacists in Japan and England

    Background: In response to anticipated increased health needs as a consequence of aging populations, and associated rising co-morbidity and medicines use, in both Japan and the UK potential extended roles for community pharmacy are part of health policy agendas. It is widely perceived that community pharmacists do not fully utilize their expertise, which may limit their contribution to health care in their communities and also impact negatively on their own job satisfaction. Purpose: The aim of this qualitative study was to identify operations that are perceived as opportunities to demonstrate expertise (ODE) and/or sources of job satisfaction by pharmacists in Japan and England, and explore associated system and contextual factors. Methods: Data were gathered with purposively selected pharmacists in Japan and England. An initial questionnaire was forwarded which guided subsequent face-to-face semi-structured interviews. These were audio-recoded to enable qualitative analytical procedures. Results: There were 18 participants in England and 13 in Japan. There was a notable association between ODE and job satisfaction. However, ODE was not a sufficient condition for job satisfaction. Conclusion: In order for pharmacists to be satisfied with their jobs, not only ODE but also additional contextual factors, i.e. recognition of professionalism, autonomy and positive collaboration were also needed. The findings can inform initiatives in the development of pharmacy services that would be positive for pharmacists whilst potentially contributing to wider public health objectives

    Three Charge Supertubes in Type IIB Plane Wave Backgrounds

    We deform the supersymmetric black ring of five dimensional supergravity coupled to N-1 vector multiplets to obtain an asymptotically Goedel supersymmetric black ring. For the U(1)^3 model we lift this solution to obtain a three charge D1-D5-P supertube which asymptotes to a 1/2 supersymmetric plane wave of Type IIB supergravity. Further, we also show how one may deform the asymptotically flat three charge supertube of type IIB, in the special case of vanishing KK dipole charge, to a three charge supertube which asymptotes to the maximally supersymmetric plane wave.Comment: 1+14 pages, JHEP

    Coiling Instabilities in Multilamellar Tubes

    Myelin figures are densely packed stacks of coaxial cylindrical bilayers that are unstable to the formation of coils or double helices. These myelin figures appear to have no intrinsic chirality. We show that such cylindrical membrane stacks can develop an instability when they acquire a spontaneous curvature or when the equilibrium distance between membranes is decreased. This instability breaks the chiral symmetry of the stack and may result in coiling. A unilamellar cylindrical vesicle, on the other hand, will develop an axisymmetric instability, possibly related to the pearling instability.Comment: 6 pages, 2 figure
