Progamotaenia capricorniensis sp nov (Cestoda : Anoplocephalidae) from wallabies (Marsupialia : Macropodidae) from Queensland, Australia
Progamotaenia capricorniensis sp. nov. (Cestoda: Anoplocephalidae) is described from the wallabies Macropus dorsalis (Gray, 1837] and Petrogale assimilis Ramsay, 1877 from Queensland, Australia. The new species is characterised by a fimbriated velum composed of 26-32 digitiform to triangular projections on each side of the proglottis, paired uteri and 140-190 testes distributed in a single band across the medulla. Minor variation occurs in the distribution of the testes. The above characters distinguish the new species from its most closely related congeners P. lagorchestis (Lewis, 1914), P. proterogyna (Fuhrmann, 1932), P. spearei Beveridge, 1980 and P. villosa (Lewis, 1914). P. capricorniensis appears to exhibit a highly disjunct distribution within its usual host, M. dorsalis
A corona-stabilised plasma closing switch
Corona-stabilised plasma closing switches, filled with electronegative gases such as SF6 and air, have been used in pulsed-power applications as repetitive switching devices for the last 10 years. Their high repetition-rate capabilities coupled with their relatively simple design and construction have made them suitable alternatives to thyratrons and semi-conductor switches. As well as having repetitive switching capabilities, corona-stabilised plasma closing switches have the potential to operate at elevated voltages through the incorporation of multiple electrode sets. This allows high-voltage operation with inherent voltage grading between the electrodes. A further feature of such switches is that they can have relatively low jitter under triggered condition. This paper reports on some of the operational features of a new design of corona-stabilised, cascade switch that utilises air as the insulating gas. At pressures between 0 and 1 bar gauge the switch has be shown to operate over the voltage range of 40 to 100 kV with a jitter below 2 ns
Safety and immunogenicity of a new tuberculosis vaccine, MVA85A, in mycobacterium tuberculosisāinfected individuals
Copyright Ā© 2009 by the American Thoracic Society.Rationale: An effective new tuberculosis (TB) vaccine regimen must be safe in individuals with latent TB infection (LTBI) and is a priority for global health care.
Objectives: To evaluate the safety and immunogenicity of a leading new TB vaccine, recombinant Modified Vaccinia Ankara expressing Antigen 85A (MVA85A) in individuals with LTBI.
Methods: An open-label, phase I trial of MVA85A was performed in 12 subjects with LTBI recruited from TB contact clinics in Oxford and London or by poster advertisements in Oxford hospitals. Patients were assessed clinically and had blood samples drawn for immunological analysis over a 52-week period after vaccination with MVA85A. Thoracic computed tomography scans were performed at baseline and at 10 weeks after vaccination. Safety of MVA85A was assessed by clinical, radiological, and inflammatory markers. The immunogenicity of MVA85A was assessed by IFNĪ³ and IL-2 ELISpot assays and FACS.
Measurements and Main Results: MVA85A was safe in subjects with LTBI, with comparable adverse events to previous trials of MVA85A. There were no clinically significant changes in inflammatory markers or thoracic computed tomography scans after vaccination. MVA85A induced a strong antigen-specific IFN-Ī³ and IL-2 response that was durable for 52 weeks. The magnitude of IFN-Ī³ response was comparable to previous trials of MVA85A in bacillus Calmette-GuĆ©rināvaccinated individuals. Antigen 85Aāspecific polyfunctional CD4+ T cells were detectable prior to vaccination with statistically significant increases in cell numbers after vaccination.
Conclusions: MVA85A is safe and highly immunogenic in individuals with LTBI. These results will facilitate further trials in TB-endemic areas.Oxford Biomedical Research Centre, Wellcome Trust, and AFTBVAC

An ultimate objective of summarizing these data is to provide a foundation for establishing reliable and practical guidelines by which more efficient utilization of cassava products and byproducts may enhance livestock and aquaculture feeding programs, particularly in West Africa
Translating concerns into action: a detailed qualitative evaluation of an interdisciplinary intervention on medical wards
Objectives To understand how frontline reports of day-to-day care failings might be better translated into improvement. Design Qualitative evaluation of an interdisciplinary team intervention to capitalise on the frontline experience of care delivery. Prospective clinical team surveillance (PCTS) involved structured interdisciplinary briefings to capture challenges in care delivery, facilitated organisational escalation of the issues they identified, and feedback. Eighteen months of ethnography and two focus groups were conducted with staff taking part in a trial of PCTS. Results PCTS fostered psychological safety ā a confidence that the team would not embarrass or punish those who speak up. This was complemented by a hard edge of accountability, whereby team members would regulate their own behaviour in anticipation of future briefings. Frontline concerns were triaged to managers, or resolved autonomously by ward teams, reversing what had been well-established normalisations of deviance. Junior clinicians found a degree of catharsis in airing their concerns, and their teams became more proactive in addressing improvement opportunities. PCTS generated tangible organisational changes, and enabled managers to make a convincing case for investment. However, briefings were constrained by the need to preserve professional credibility, and the relative comfort afforded by the avoidance of accountability. At higher organisational levels, frontline concerns were subject to competition with other priorities, and their resolution was limited by the scale of the challenges they described. Conclusions Prospective safety strategies relying on staff-volunteered data do approximate the realities of frontline care, but still produce acceptable, negotiated accounts, subject to the many interdisciplinary tensions that characterise ward work. Nonetheless, they give managers access to these accounts, and support frontline staff to make incremental changes in their daily work. These are goals for learning healthcare organisations
Space Climate Manifestation in Earth Prices - from Medieval England Up to Modern Usa
In this study we continue to search for possible manifestations of space
weather influence on prices of agricultural products and consumables. We note
that the connection between solar activity and prices is based on the causal
chain that includes several nonlinear transition elements. These non-linear
elements are characterized by threshold sensitivity to external parameters and
lead to very inhomogeneous local sensitivity of the price to space weather
conditions. It is noted that "soft type" models are the most adequate for
description of this class of connections. Two main observational effects
suitable for testing causal connections of this type of sensitivity are
considered: burst-like price reactions on changes in solar activity and price
asymmetry for selected phases of the sunspot cycle. The connection, discovered
earlier for wheat prices of Medieval England, is examined in this work on the
basis of another 700-year data set of consumable prices in England. Using the
same technique as in the previous part of our work (Pistilnik and Yom Din 2004)
we show that statistical parameters of the interval distributions for price
bursts of consumables basket and for sunspot minimum states are similar one to
another, like it was reported earlier for wheat price bursts. Possible sources
of these consistencies between three different multiyear samples are discussed.
For search of possible manifestations of the "space weather - wheat market"
connection in modern time, we analyze dynamics of wheat prices in the USA in
the twentieth century. We show that the wheat prices revealed a maximum/minimum
price asymmetry consistent with the phases of the sunspot cycle. We discuss
possible explanations of this observed asymmetry, unexpected under conditions

Genetic characterisation of Echinocephalus spp. (Nematoda: Gnathostomatidae) from marine hosts in Australia
We genetically characterised larval and adult specimens of species of Echinocephalus Molin, 1858 (Gnathostomatidae) collected from various hosts found within Australian waters. Adult specimens of Echinocephalus were collected from a dasyatid stingray [Pastinachus ater (Macleay); n = 2] from Moreton Bay, Queensland and larvae from a hydrophiine sea snake [Hydrophis peronii (DumƩril); n = 3] from Cape York Peninsula, Queensland, from an octopus (Octopus djinda Amor & Hart; n = 3) from Fremantle, Western Australia and from a lucinid bivalve [Codakia paytenorum (Iredale); n = 5] from Heron Island, Queensland Australia. All nematode samples were identified morphologically and genetically characterised using the small subunit nuclear ribosomal DNA (SSU). Some morphological differences were identified between previous studies of Echinocephalus spp. and those observed herein but the significance of these differences remains unresolved. Molecular phylogenetic analyses revealed that larval Echinocephalus sp. from H. peronii and C. paytenorum in Australia were very similar (with strong nodal support) to larval Echinocephalus sp. infecting two fish species from Egypt, Saurida undosquamis (Richardson) (Synodontidae) and Pagrus pagrus (Linnaeus) (Sparidae). The SSU sequences of larval Echinocephalus sp. from O. djinda and adults from P. ater formed a well-supported clade with that of adult E. overstreeti Deardorff and Ko, 1983 from the Port Jackson shark, Heterodontus portusjacksoni (Meyer), as well as that of the larval Echinocephalus sp., from the common carp (Cyprinus carpio Linnaeus) from Egypt. This study extends the intermediate host range of Echinocephalus larvae by including a sea snake for the first time. Findings of this study highlight the importance of genetic characterisation of larval and adult specimens of Echinocephalus spp. to resolve the current difficulties in the taxonomy of this genus
Characterization of Automotive Paint Clear Coats by Ultraviolet Absorption Microspectrophotometry with Subsequent Chemometric Analysis
Clear coats have been a staple in automobile paints for almost thirty years and are of forensic interest when comparing transferred and native paints. However, the ultraviolet (UV) absorbers in these paint layers are not typically characterized using UV microspectrophotometry, nor are the results studied using multivariate statistical methods. In this study, measurements were carried out by UV microspectrophotometry on 71 samples from American and Australian automobiles, with subsequent chemometric analysis of the absorbance spectra. Sample preparation proved to be vital in obtaining accurate absorbance spectra and a method involving peeling the clear coat layer and not using a mounting medium was preferred. Agglomerative hierarchical clustering indicated three main groups of spectra, corresponding to spectra with one, two, and three maxima. Principal components analysis confirmed this clustering and the factor loadings indicated that a substantial proportion of the variance in the data set originated from specific spectral regions (230-265 nm, 275-285 nm, and 300-370 nm). The three classes were well differentiated using discriminant analysis, where the cross-validation accuracy was 91.6% and the external validation accuracy was 81.1%.
