Surface irrigation includes flood (sometimes denoted “wild flood,” as in uncontrolled), furrow, border, and basin. Surface irrigation operation and maintenance may be more of an art than a science

BAREFOOT RUNNING TRAINING: IMPLlCATtONS FOR JOINT STIFFNESS AND MUSCULAR CO-ACTWAlION

    Get PDF
To determine the influence of barefoot training on neuromuscular w-activation of lower limb muscles on variables associated with injury risk during running. Trained shod runners (n=23) participated in a barefoot running program. Joint stiffness, agonist: antagonist co-activation and the co-activation index were calculated. A progressive barefoot training program induces longer co-activation of the shank complex and lower ankle stiffness in the barefoot condition. Footwear is implicated in changing injury risk factors whether soft tissue or bony related injuries. This paper suggests barefoot training as an avenue for rehabilitating ankle injuries as it promotes an even distribution of joint stillness and lower ankle stiffness when compared to shod running

A New Fossil Amiid from the Eocene of Senegal and the Persistence of Extinct Marine Amiids after the Cretaceous–Paleogene Boundary

    Get PDF
We report a new fossil amiid from Eocene rocks of West Africa representing the first record of this clade from Senegal. The new specimen has a maxilla that is very similar in size to that of Amia calva. It is distinctly smaller than reported remains of another West African Eocene taxon, Maliamia gigas. We tentatively refer the Senegal specimen to Vidalamiini because it has the large postmaxillary process diagnostic of this clade; however, it also exhibits anatomical features not previously described in extinct amiids. We recovered the specimen in rocks of the Lam-Lam Formation in Central-Western Senegal that we interpret to have been a shallow marine depositional environment. The occurrence of an Eocene marine amiid contradicts existing hypotheses that marine amiids were generally absent after the Cretaceous– Paleogene boundary having been replaced by freshwater taxa. Research completed since the initial discovery of Maliamia gigas indicates that this Eocene taxon was also found in shallow marine rocks

Integration of physiology in a curriculum on human structure: a snapshot of the cardiovascular block

With the gradual shift from discipline-based to competency-based medical education, the integrated curriculum has become a popular model for connecting basic science and clinical content in undergraduate medical education. Despite its popularity, there are concerns that important physiological concepts are not adequately addressed. We describe the spiral integration of physiology content in the 5-week Cardiovascular block of our Homeostasis course at the Zucker School of Medicine. We also describe our approach to incorporating physiology into an integrated, constructed response, short-answer assessment format. Our approach to spiral integration consists of rotating lab stations that highlight the distinction between normal and abnormal states, linked with appropriate clinical interventions. Physiology is at the core of integration in any curriculum and the basis of all applied fields of medicine, hence our approach is that teaching structural relationships would not be valuable without consideration of its functions, which can then be utilized in discussion of clinical presentations, imaging, and relevant pathologies. Likewise, our integrated assessments require the students to compose their answers to the questions from scratch, which creates a shift in mode of students’ preparation from rote memorizations to more cognitive processing that enhances critical thinking
