The Future of Professional Career Guidance: Where Next?
This paper has been prepared as part of igen's 10th-anniversary celebrations. Its contents reflect an ongoing dialogue between a Careers Service company chief executive and a career guidance researcher, both of whom are committed to exploring issues related to the future of the career
guidance profession. It also includes a detailed bibliography that offers references to relevant reports and journal articles relevant to this topic. Overall, it aims to stimulate and contribute to a national debate on the future of professional career guidance. The authors are indebted to Tony Watts for his editorial support in the preparation of this paper

Relinquishing Control: What Romanian De Se Attitude Reports Teach Us About Immunity To Error Through Misidentification
Higginbotham argued that certain linguistic items of English, when used in indirect discourse, necessarily trigger first-personal interpretations. They are: the emphatic reflexive pronoun and the controlled understood subject, represented as PRO. PRO is special, in this respect, due to its imposing obligatory control effects between the main clause and its subordinates ). Folescu & Higginbotham, in addition, argued that in Romanian, a language whose grammar doesn’t assign a prominent role to PRO, de se triggers are correlated with the subjunctive mood of certain verbs. That paper, however, didn’t account for the grammatical diversity of the reports that display immunity to error through misidentification in Romanian: some of these reports are expressed by using de se triggers; others are not. Their IEM, moreover, is not systematically lexically controlled by the verbs, via their theta-roles; it is, rather, determined by the meaning of the verbs in question. Given the data from Romanian, I will argue, the phenomenon of IEM cannot be fully explained starting either from the syntactical or the lexical structure of a language
From the Arctic to the Tropics: A Thematic Analysis of Teacher Candidates’ Reflections of Two Cross-Cultural Programs
This study describes how one university prepares culturally responsive teacher candidates through Alaska and Thailand cross-cultural summer study trips. The study addressed the impact of the Alaska and Thailand cross-cultural experiences on teacher candidates as described in their reflective writings. The reflections addressed their socialization and depth of understanding and appreciation of children and adults from another culture. The authors looked for parallel themes that emerged as characteristics of both experiences
Parity lifetime of bound states in a proximitized semiconductor nanowire
Quasiparticle excitations can compromise the performance of superconducting
devices, causing high frequency dissipation, decoherence in Josephson qubits,
and braiding errors in proposed Majorana-based topological quantum computers.
Quasiparticle dynamics have been studied in detail in metallic superconductors
but remain relatively unexplored in semiconductor-superconductor structures,
which are now being intensely pursued in the context of topological
superconductivity. To this end, we introduce a new physical system comprised of
a gate-confined semiconductor nanowire with an epitaxially grown superconductor
layer, yielding an isolated, proximitized nanowire segment. We identify
Andreev-like bound states in the semiconductor via bias spectroscopy, determine
the characteristic temperatures and magnetic fields for quasiparticle
excitations, and extract a parity lifetime (poisoning time) of the bound state
in the semiconductor exceeding 10 ms.Comment: text and supplementary information combine
Transport signatures of quasiparticle poisoning in a Majorana island
We investigate effects of quasiparticle poisoning in a Majorana island with
strong tunnel coupling to normal-metal leads. In addition to the main Coulomb
blockade diamonds, "shadow" diamonds appear, shifted by 1e in gate voltage,
consistent with transport through an excited (poisoned) state of the island.
Comparison to a simple model yields an estimate of parity lifetime for the
strongly coupled island (~ 1 {\mu}s) and sets a bound for a weakly coupled
island (> 10 {\mu}s). Fluctuations in the gate-voltage spacing of Coulomb peaks
at high field, reflecting Majorana hybridization, are enhanced by the reduced
lever arm at strong coupling. In energy units, fluctuations are consistent with
previous measurements.Comment: includes supplementary materia
