‘As Meeke as Medea, as honest as Hellen’: English literary representations of two troublesome classical women, c.1160-1650

My thesis considers English literary representations of two notorious classical women, Helen of Troy and Medea, from the twelfth to the seventeenth centuries. My primary focus is on the ways in which male authors in the period deal with the troubling spectres of the women's very different powers: Helen's alarming and captivating sexuality, Medea's magical abilities and unrestrained violence. First tracing how their power is represented in classical and late antique Greek and Latin texts, I then assess how their stories enter the English literary imagination. My project considers both longer renderings of their stories (Gower's Confessio Amantis, Lydgate's Troy Book, Heywood's Ages) and also the brief references to both women that recur time and again in the works of authors including Chaucer, Hoccleve, Gascoigne, Turberville and Greene. My research spans genres and media, considering the various uses the women are put to (didactic, cautionary, tragic, occasionally comic) in history, prose, poetry and drama, as well as in direct translation of classical works. Very often, authors use Helen and/or Medea ironically, in a way that demands a close familiarity with their classical incarnations (particularly, perhaps, with Ovid). Often paired as well as treated separately, Helen and Medea are used across the period to exemplify the unhappy effects of love, the dangerous effects of passion, and perhaps most frequently, the peculiar dangers women pose to men. Though their literary incarnations have often been considered separately by critics, by handling them together my research considers the way authors such as Chaucer, Lydgate, Gascoigne and Turberville choose their classical exemplars very carefully, how two apparently quite different notorious women may be turned to the same ends, used to caution both men and women. Taking their power, and concerted male efforts to undermine it, as its overarching theme, the thesis considers Helen and Medea in relation to medieval and Renaissance theories of translation, to instructional, didactic or cautionary literature, to Christianity, to political and religious upheaval, and most significantly, in relation to the male establishment of the period

Strategic Targeting Of The PI3k–NFκB Axis In Cisplatin-resistant NSCLC

Chemoresistance is a major therapeutic challenge to overcome in NSCLC, in order to improve the current survival rates of <15% at 5 years. We and others have shown increased PI3K signaling in NSCLC to be associated with a more aggressive disease, and a poorer prognosis. In this study, targeted inhibition of three strategic points of the PI3K–NFκB axis was performed with the aim of exploiting vulnerabilities in cisplatin-resistant NSCLC cells. Cisplatin-resistant cell lines were previously generated through prolonged exposure to the drug. Expression of PI3K and NFκB pathway-related genes were compared between cisplatin-resistant cells and their matched parent cells using a gene expression array, qRT-PCR, DNA sequencing, western blot, and immunofluorescence. Targeted inhibition was performed using GDC-0980, a dual PI3K–mTOR inhibitor currently in Phase II clinical trials in NSCLC, and DHMEQ, an inhibitor of NFκB translocation which has been used extensively both in vitro and in vivo. Effects of the two inhibitors were assessed by BrdU proliferation assay and multiparameter viability assay. NFKBIA was shown to be 12-fold overexpressed in cisplatin-resistant cells, with no mutations present in exons 3, 4, or 5 of the gene. Corresponding overexpression of IκBα was also observed. Treatment with DHMEQ (but not GDC-0980) led to significantly enhanced effects on viability and proliferation in cisplatin-resistant cells compared with parent cells. We conclude that NFκB inhibition represents a more promising strategy than PI3K–mTOR inhibition for treatment in the chemoresistance setting in NSCLC

Reciprocal Peer Learning in Design

This report examines reciprocal peer learning as a way to involve design students in a cooperative process of critical enquiry and reflection. It looks at various interpretations of peer learning and describes my own experience of incorporating peer learning into my teaching. It identifies some of the advantages and reflects on some of the challenges presented by peer learning approaches

Causes and Consequences of Collective Turnover: A Meta-Analytic Review

Given growing interest in collective turnover (i.e., employee turnover at unit and organizational levels), the authors propose an organizing framework for its antecedents and consequences and test it using meta-analysis. Based on analysis of 694 effect sizes drawn from 82 studies, results generally support expected relationships across the 6 categories of collective turnover antecedents, with somewhat stronger and more consistent results for 2 categories: human resource management inducements/investments and job embeddedness signals. Turnover was negatively related to numerous performance outcomes, more strongly so for proximal rather than distal outcomes. Several theoretically grounded moderators help to explain average effect-size heterogeneity for both antecedents and consequences of turnover. Relationships generally did not vary according to turnover type (e.g., total or voluntary), although the relative absence of collective-level involuntary turnover studies is noted and remains an important avenue for future research

Pro-Design: Digital Media Pack for Professional Graphic Designers

The importance of developing a comprehensive digital design presence as well a as digital business strategy has become a necessity for graphic design practitioners. In this report I review how this could be achieved and document the development of a coherent digital presence that has a more inclusive approach to client/designer communication and that better suits the needs of a graphic designer in industry. This document provides a detailed overview of my research and development for this MA Project. It sets down the course of action and the directions that the project took and identifies the aims and objectives I hoped to fulfil during the development of the project. It documents the process that I followed to achieve this including research, analysis and development, realisation, presentation and reflection. It also provides a description of the projects deliverables and the relevant functionality and content

Chinese Students in Irish 3rd Level Education

This paper aims to examine some of the issues Chinese students face in Irish 3rd level Education. I will look at some of the cultural, social and academic issues that may influence the quality of a Chinese students learning experience in a Western system. I will begin by looking at Irelands involvement with Chinese student recruitment and then briefly look at Chinas educational history. This will put the situation into context and allow me to examine some of the problems encountered by the Chinese student. I will explore the complexity of teaching someone from such a different cultural background. Finally I hope to address the importance of inclusion and what the foreign student can bring to both their own and their peer learning experience
