Recently, the second author studied an Eulerian statistic (called cover) in the context of convex polytopes, and proved an equal joint distribution of (cover,des) with (des,exc). In this paper, we present several direct bijective proofs that cover is Eulerian, and examine its generalizations and their Mahonian partners. We also present a quasi-symmetric function proof (suggested by Michelle Wachs) of the above equal joint distribution

Do the laws of physics prohibit counterfactual communication?

It has been conjectured that counterfactual communication is impossible, even for post-selected quantum particles. We strongly challenge this by proposing exactly such a counterfactual scheme where---unambiguously---none of Alice's photons that make it has been to Bob. We demonstrate counterfactuality theoretically and experimentally by means of weak measurements, as well as conceptually using consistent histories. Importantly, the accuracy of Alice learning Bob's bit can be made arbitrarily close to unity with no trace left by Bob on Alice's photon.Comment: Experiment conducted in the lab, showing no weak trace from Bob at either D0 or D1. 5 pages, 5 figure

Implementing Social and Emotional Learning in the Choral Classroom

The purpose of this study was to discover what happens when social emotional learning is incorporated in the choral classroom through a unit of solo songs with inspirational texts. The study was conducted in a high school beginner treble choir. The researcher collected data through pre- and post-surveys, student artifacts, and semi-structured interviews. Data were analyzed using the constant comparative method. Four major themes emerged including growth in togetherness, newfound confidence, mindfulness, and boosted performance. Statistics confirmed that the unit had a positive influence on all but one of the participants. The researcher displayed her findings through poetic transcriptions and column charts

D0 General Support: The Use of Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCS) at D0

With the exception of control of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) ventilation fans, and their shutdown in the case of smoke in the ducts, all implementations of Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs) in Dzero have been made within the fundamental premise that no uncertified PLC apparatus shall be entrusted with the safety of equipment or personnel. Thus although PLCs are used to control and monitor all manner of intricate equipment, simple hardware interlocks and relief devices provide basic protection against component failure, control failure, or inappropriate control operation. Nevertheless, this report includes two observations as follows: (1) It may be prudent to reconfigure the link between the Pyrotronics system and the HVAC system such that the Pyrotronics system provides interlocks to the ventilation fans instead of control inputs to the uncertified HVAC PLCs. Although the Pyrotronics system is certified and maintained to life safety standards, the HVAC system is not. A hardware or software failure of the HVAC system probably should not be allowed to result in the situation where the ventilation fans in a smoke filled duct continue to operate. Dan Markley is investigating this matter. (2) It may also be prudent to examine the network security of those systems connected to the Fermilab WAN (HVAC, Cryo, and Solenoid Controls). Even though the impact of a successful hack might only be to operations, it might nevertheless be disruptive and could be expensive. The risks should perhaps be analyzed. One of the most attractive features of these systems, from a user's viewpoint, is their unlimited networking. The unlimited networking that makes the systems so convenient to legitimate access also makes them vulnerable to illegitimate access

A New Lens Community Engagement Project

Tensions continue to run high between law enforcement and communities of color in the Twin Cities metropolitan area following multiple police-related deaths, including Jamar Clark and Philando Castile. Studies, both nationally and regionally, demonstrate an elevated level of distrust for law enforcement in the Black community and higher numbers of police errors involving the shooting of unarmed Black people. The author sought to create a project that would enhance perspective taking, address bias and stereotypes, and provide a safe space for healthy dialogue between the volunteers from the law enforcement and Black community using the arts. Photovoice is a technique that combines photography and narrative to create social awareness and has been used with oppressed or marginalized groups, such as sex workers, refugees, and former child soldiers. A modified Photovoice project was used to bring together individuals to present photographs representing their lived experiences and engage in dialogue together. A modified Photovoice project was chosen to facilitate this process with members of the Black community and law enforcement with the goal of seeing each other through a new lens and creating conditions for trust to be built between the two groups. This project highlighted the multidimensionality of identity for each participant, reduced tension, created the safety needed to discuss difficult topics, and provided the foundation for future relationships. Feedback from participants indicated a desire to share this project with the community and reproduce it in other communities and with other groups who have a history of conflict or are experiencing a lack of trust or engagement with each other

USERRA Oxymoron: Termination as a Valid Reemployment Position, The

This Note assesses Milhauser’s impact on reemployment claims under USERRA. Part II begins with an analysis of the facts and holding of the case. Next, Part III synthesizes the background of USERRA, provides an overview of the statute, and introduces the escalator principle. Part IV outlines the court’s rationale in deciding Milhauser. Finally, Part V discusses the impact of Milhauser on USERRA reemployment claims. This Note argues that: (1) the court’s reliance on USERRA regulation § 1002.194 was misplaced because the court’s interpretation presents a conflict between two sections of the statute and creates burden of proof issues; (2) the Milhauser holding should be narrowly interpreted; and (3) the case presents several unanswered questions that will spur subsequent litigation
