Background and Aim: Nursing work in emergency departments is tangled with unbearable hardship and high working pressure as well as an increased risk of occupational injuries. Needle stick injury is among such risks. Incidence of these injuries differs in different hospital wards. This study aimed to determine needle stick injury risks in emergency ward in comparison with other wards of Qazvin hospitals in 2010. Materials and Methods: This historical cohort study was done on nursing staff working in Qazvin hospitals. Statistical population included nursing staffs at Qazvin hospitals who were responsible for direct patient care. From among nurses working in the emergency wards, 52 were selected. Control group consisted of 258 nurses who had worked in other wards of the same hospitals. The research instrument was a self-administered questionnaire. To determine validity and reliability of the Instrument, content validity and test-retest were performed. The collected data was analyzed using Independent t test, Mann-Whitney, Chi-Square, Fisher Exact Test, and Logistic Regression through SPSS (version 16) at 0.05. Results: Risk of injury in emergency ward was three times more than other wards (p<0.01). The average numbers of beds in emergency wards and in other wards were 24.2±.6.7 and 18.1± 10.7 respectively. Nonetheless, number of nurses on different shifts in emergency wards, especially in the evening shift, was significantly lower (p<0.05). However, according to logistic regression analysis, the work in emergency ward was an independent risk factor for needle stick injuries (p<0.05). Conclusion: The risk of needle stick injuries among nurses in emergency wards is dramatically higher than other wards. It seems that more beds per nurse affects this increased risk. It is proposed that the number of nurses in emergency departments be increased, especially in the evening shift so that the risk of this serious injury may be reduced

General Conceptual Framework of Future Wearables in Healthcare: Unified, Unique, Ubiquitous, and Unobtrusive (U4) for Customized Quantified Output

    Get PDF
We concentrate on the importance and future conceptual development of wearable devices as the major means of personalized healthcare. We discuss and address the role of wearables in the new era of healthcare in proactive medicine. This work addresses the behavioral, environmental, physiological, and psychological parameters as the most effective domains in personalized healthcare, and the wearables are categorized according to the range of measurements. The importance of multi-parameter, multi-domain monitoring and the respective interactions are further discussed and the generation of wearables based on the number of monitoring area(s) is consequently formulated

Instrument to collect fogwater for chemical analysis

    Get PDF
An instrument is presented which collects large samples of ambient fogwater by impaction of droplets on a screen. The collection efficiency of the instrument is determined as a function of droplet size, and it is shown that fog droplets in the range 3–100-µm diameter are efficiently collected. No significant evaporation or condensation occurs at any stage of the collection process. Field testing indicates that samples collected are representative of the ambient fogwater. The instrument may easily be automated, and is suitable for use in routine air quality monitoring programs

Manipulation of the Upper Respiratory Microbiota to Reduce Incidence and Severity of Upper Respiratory Viral Infections: A Literature Review.

    Get PDF
There is a high incidence of upper respiratory viral infections in the human population, with infection severity being unique to each individual. Upper respiratory viruses have been associated previously with secondary bacterial infection, however, several cross-sectional studies analyzed in the literature indicate that an inverse relationship can also occur. Pathobiont abundance and/or bacterial dysbiosis can impair epithelial integrity and predispose an individual to viral infection. In this review we describe common commensal microorganisms that have the capacity to reduce the abundance of pathobionts and maintain bacterial symbiosis in the upper respiratory tract and discuss the potential and limitations of localized probiotic formulations of commensal bacteria to reduce the incidence and severity of viral infections

Comparison of albuterol sulphate and base dry powder particulate deposition using the Calu-3 lung epithelial model

To effectively predict the fate of formulated inhalation compounds delivered to the lung, a model of the airway epithelium should reflect drug permeability and transport characteristics in vivo. Most cell-based system established for this purpose, study drug transport using wet models and thus do not necessarily represent in vivo conditions. Recently, air-interface models have been established that increase the relevance of in vitro transport studies to the in vivo state. The aim of our study was to elucidate the dissolution and diffusion process of deposited dry drug particulates (albuterol) after aerosolization onto the epithelial surface and compare these to conventional in vitro `glass models. Two forms of albuterol were investigated (albuterol base and albuterol sulphate), to evaluate the effects of lipophilicity and aqueous solubility on the mechanism of transport

Implicit integration scheme for porous viscoplastic potential-based constitutive equations

This paper deals with a viscoplastic potential-based model allowing thermomechanical damage behavior modeling of porous materials. The model describes rate dependent effects, hardening, creep as well as defects coalescence and propagation. Kinematic and isotropic hardening effects are taken into account by a set of internal state variables. The integration and implementation of the model into the FE code using a fully implicit integration scheme is exposed. Finally, it 19s used to predict mechanical behaviour degradation of solder layers used in power electronic packaging. Stress-strain behaviour and the evolution of volumic fraction of voids for the material under cyclic loading are presented
