Language Model Guided Interpretable Video Action Reasoning
While neural networks have excelled in video action recognition tasks, their
black-box nature often obscures the understanding of their decision-making
processes. Recent approaches used inherently interpretable models to analyze
video actions in a manner akin to human reasoning. These models, however,
usually fall short in performance compared to their black-box counterparts. In
this work, we present a new framework named Language-guided Interpretable
Action Recognition framework (LaIAR). LaIAR leverages knowledge from language
models to enhance both the recognition capabilities and the interpretability of
video models. In essence, we redefine the problem of understanding video model
decisions as a task of aligning video and language models. Using the logical
reasoning captured by the language model, we steer the training of the video
model. This integrated approach not only improves the video model's
adaptability to different domains but also boosts its overall performance.
Extensive experiments on two complex video action datasets, Charades & CAD-120,
validates the improved performance and interpretability of our LaIAR framework.

Strain Softening Induced by High Pressure Torsion in Copper Alloys
Three kinds of Cu-Al alloys and a pure Cu sample with different stacking fault energies (SFEs) are deformed using room temperature rolling (RR) and high pressure torsion (HPT), respectively. The microstructure is analysed by means of transaction electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction. It is found that HIPT is more feasible to obtain nanocrystals and profuse twins. Tailoring the SFE can promote sample strength without sacrificing the ductility of the Cu alloys. The tensile properties of samples processed by HPT and RR are compared. It is discovered that the HPT process leads to the strain softening phenomenon in samples with relatively high SFE. The excellent mechanical properties can be obtained in samples deformed by HPT with a SFE of 6 mJ/m(2), in which strain softening was restrained and strain hardening played a dominant role in the deformation process. Activation of the innate immune receptor Dectin-1 upon formation of a 'phagocytic synapse'.
Innate immune cells must be able to distinguish between direct binding to microbes and detection of components shed from the surface of microbes located at a distance. Dectin-1 (also known as CLEC7A) is a pattern-recognition receptor expressed by myeloid phagocytes (macrophages, dendritic cells and neutrophils) that detects β-glucans in fungal cell walls and triggers direct cellular antimicrobial activity, including phagocytosis and production of reactive oxygen species (ROS). In contrast to inflammatory responses stimulated upon detection of soluble ligands by other pattern-recognition receptors, such as Toll-like receptors (TLRs), these responses are only useful when a cell comes into direct contact with a microbe and must not be spuriously activated by soluble stimuli. In this study we show that, despite its ability to bind both soluble and particulate β-glucan polymers, Dectin-1 signalling is only activated by particulate β-glucans, which cluster the receptor in synapse-like structures from which regulatory tyrosine phosphatases CD45 and CD148 (also known as PTPRC and PTPRJ, respectively) are excluded (Supplementary Fig. 1). Signed Laplacian Deep Learning with Adversarial Augmentation for Improved Mammography Diagnosis
Computer-aided breast cancer diagnosis in mammography is limited by
inadequate data and the similarity between benign and cancerous masses. To
address this, we propose a signed graph regularized deep neural network with
adversarial augmentation, named \textsc{DiagNet}. Firstly, we use adversarial
learning to generate positive and negative mass-contained mammograms for each
mass class. After that, a signed similarity graph is built upon the expanded
data to further highlight the discrimination. Finally, a deep convolutional
neural network is trained by jointly optimizing the signed graph regularization
and classification loss. Experiments show that the \textsc{DiagNet} framework
outperforms the state-of-the-art in breast mass diagnosis in mammography.Comment: To appear in MICCAI October 201
Characteristics of a population-based multiple sclerosis cohort treated with disease-modifying drugs in a universal healthcare setting
BACKGROUND: Relatively little is known about the use of disease-modifying drugs (DMDs) for multiple sclerosis (MS) in the population-based universal healthcare setting. This study aimed to describe the characteristics of a population-based cohort with MS and their DMD exposure in four Canadian provinces. METHODS: We identified all adults (aged ≥18 years) with MS using linked population-based health administrative data. Individuals were followed from the most recent of their first MS or demyelinating event or 1 January 1996(study entry), to the earliest of death, emigration, or 31 March 2018(study end). Cohort characteristics examined included sex, age, socioeconomic status, and comorbidity burden. RESULTS: Overall, 10,418/35,894 (29%) of MS cases filled a DMD prescription during the 22-year study period. Most were women (n = 7,683/10,418;74%), and 17% (n = 1,745/10,418) had some comorbidity (Charlson Comorbidity Index≥1) at study entry. Nearly 20% (n = 1,745/10,418) were aged ≥50 when filling their first DMD; the mean age was 39.6 years. CONCLUSIONS: Almost 1 in 6 people with MS had at least some comorbidity, and nearly 1 in 6 were ≥50 years old at the time of their first DMD. As these individuals are typically excluded from clinical trials, findings illustrate the need to understand the harms and benefits of DMD use in these understudied groups
Seroprevalence of Mycoplasma bovis infection in dairy cows in subtropical southern China
The seroprevalence of Mycoplasma bovis infection in dairy cows in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region (GZAR) in subtropical southern China was surveyed between June 2009 and March 2010. A total of 455 serum samples of dairy cows were collected from 6 districts in 4 different cities, and examined for M. bovis antibodies with the indirect enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) using a commercially available kit. The overall seroprevalence of M. bovis infection in dairy cows was 7.69% (35/455). Three year-old dairy cows had the highest seroprevalence (15.0%), followed by dairy cows of 4 year-old (11.1%). Dairy cows with the history of 5 pregnancies had the highest seroprevalence (33.3%). However, no statistically significant association was found between M. bovis infection and age or number of pregnancies (p > 0.05). All the aborting dairy cows were negative for M. bovis antibodies, suggesting that bovine abortion may have no association with M. bovis infection in GZAR. These results indicate that M. bovis infection in dairy cows was widespread in GZAR, and integrated strategies and measures should be performed to control and prevent M. bovis infection and disease outbreak.Key words: Mycoplasma bovis, seroprevalence, dairy cows, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region (GZAR), China, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA)
Observation of contemporaneous optical radiation from a gamma-ray burst
The origin of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) has been enigmatic since their
discovery. The situation improved dramatically in 1997, when the rapid
availability of precise coordinates for the bursts allowed the detection of
faint optical and radio afterglows - optical spectra thus obtained have
demonstrated conclusively that the bursts occur at cosmological distances. But,
despite efforts by several groups, optical detection has not hitherto been
achieved during the brief duration of a burst. Here we report the detection of
bright optical emission from GRB990123 while the burst was still in progress.
Our observations begin 22 seconds after the onset of the burst and show an
increase in brightness by a factor of 14 during the first 25 seconds; the
brightness then declines by a factor of 100, at which point (700 seconds after
the burst onset) it falls below our detection threshold. The redshift of this
burst, approximately 1.6, implies a peak optical luminosity of 5 times 10^{49}
erg per second. Optical emission from gamma-ray bursts has been generally
thought to take place at the shock fronts generated by interaction of the
primary energy source with the surrounding medium, where the gamma-rays might
also be produced. The lack of a significant change in the gamma-ray light curve
when the optical emission develops suggests that the gamma-rays are not

Targeted Delivery of Sildenafil for Inhibiting Pulmonary Vascular Remodeling
Pulmonary arterial hypertension is a fatal lung disease caused by the progressive remodeling of small pulmonary arteries (PAs). Sildenafil can prevent the remodeling of PAs, but conventional sildenafil formulations have shown limited treatment efficacy for their poor accumulation in PAs. Here, glucuronic acid (GlcA)-modified liposomes (GlcA-Lips) were developed to improve the delivery of sildenafil to aberrant over-proliferative PA smooth muscle cells via targeting the GLUT-1 (glucose transport-1), and, therefore, inhibiting the remodeling of PAs in a monocrotaline-induced PA hypertension model. GlcA-Lips encapsulating sildenafil (GlcA-sildenafil-Lips) had a size of 90 nm and a pH-sensitive drug release pattern. Immunostaining assay indicated the overexpression of GLUT-1 in PA smooth muscle cells. Cellular uptake studies showed a 1-fold increase of GlcA-Lips uptake by PA smooth muscle cells and pharmacokinetics and biodistribution experiments indicated longer blood circulation time of GlcA-Lips and increased ability to target PAs by 1-fold after 8 hours administration. Two-week treatment indicated GlcA-sildenafil-Lips significantly inhibited the remodeling of PAs, with a 32% reduction in the PA pressure, a 41% decrease in the medial thickening, and a 44% reduction of the right ventricle cardiomyocyte hypertrophy, and improved survival rate. Immunohistochemical analysis showed enhanced expression of caspase-3, after administration of GlcA-sildenafil-Lips, and reduced expression of P-ERK1/2 (phosphorylated ERK1/2) and HK-2 (hexokinase-2), and increased level of eNOS (endothelial nitric oxide synthase) and cyclic GMP (cGMP). In conclusion, targeted delivery of sildenafil to PA smooth muscle cells with GlcA-Lips could effectively inhibit the remodeling of PAs in the monocrotaline-induced PA hypertension
The Reform of Employee Compensation in China’s Industrial Enterprises
Although employee compensation reform in Chinese industrial sector has been discussed in the literature, the real changes in compensation system and pay practices have received insufficient attention and warrant further examination. This paper briefly reviews the pre- and post-reform compensation system, and reports the results of a survey of pay practices in the four major types of industrial enterprises in China. The research findings indicate that the type of enterprise ownership has little influence on general compensation practices, adoption of profit-sharing plans, and subsidy and allowance packages. In general, pay is linked more to individual performance and has become an important incentive to Chinese employees. However, differences are found across the enterprise types with regard to performance-related pay. Current pay practices are positively correlated to overall effectiveness of the enterprise
