Economic Development in China and Its Implications for East Asia
In the aftermath of the economic crisis of 1997-98 South Korea has undertaken a number of major institutional reforms. What are these reforms? Why were they undertaken? What is the outcome of the reforms? In answering these questions the paper examines the influence that the ideas of political leaders on political economy had in setting forth the reform agenda and the role that various interest groups have played in implementing the reform. It argues that there was a shift in the developmental paradigm in the early 1980s, that the new paradigm guided reforms in Korea during the 1980s and 1990s but with initial conditions and interest politics influencing the implementation and actual outcome of reform, and that the post-crisis reform was a culmination of the reform process that began in the early 1980s.Korea, Institutional Reform, Asian Financial Crisis.
Alternative subtraction scheme using Nagy Soper dipoles
We present an alternative subtraction scheme for the treatment of infrared
divergences in NLO QCD calculations. In this scheme, the number of
transformations is greatly reduced with respect to the standard subtraction
scheme by Catani and Seymour. We discuss the general setup of the scheme as
well as first applications to NLO processes at hadron and lepton colliders.Comment: 6 pages, 1 figure, presented at RADCOR 0

Interpretation of HRCT Scans in the Diagnosis of IPF: Improving Communication Between Pulmonologists and Radiologists.
Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is a progressive fibrosing interstitial lung disease (ILD). In this review, we describe the central role of high-resolution computed tomography (HRCT) in the diagnosis of IPF and discuss how communication between pulmonologists and radiologists might be improved to make the interpretation of HRCT scans more effective. Clinical information is important in the interpretation of HRCT scans, as the likelihood that specific radiologic features reflect IPF is not absolute, but dependent on the clinical context. In cases where the clinical context or HRCT pattern are inconclusive, multidisciplinary discussion (MDD) between a pulmonologist and radiologist (and, where relevant, a pathologist and rheumatologist) experienced in the differential diagnosis of ILD is necessary to establish a diagnosis. While it can be challenging to convene a face-to-face meeting, MDD can be conducted virtually or by telephone to enable each specialty group to contribute. To make the MDD most effective, it is important that relevant clinical information (for example, on the patient's clinical history, exposures and the results of serological tests) is shared with all parties in advance. A common lexicon to describe HRCT features observed in ILD can also help improve the effectiveness of MDD. A working diagnosis may be made in patients who do not fulfill all the diagnostic criteria for any specific type of ILD, but this diagnosis should be reviewed at regular intervals, with repeat of clinical, radiological, and laboratory assessments as appropriate, as new information pertinent to the patient's diagnosis may become available
On a Dynamical Brauer-Manin Obstruction
Let F : X --> X be a morphism of a variety defined over a number field K, let
V be a K-subvariety of X, and let O_F(P)= {F^n(P) :n=0,1,2,...} be the orbit of
a point P in X(K). We describe a local-global principle for the intersection of
V and O_F(P). This principle may be viewed as a dynamical analog of the
Brauer-Manin obstruction. We show that the rational points of V(K) are
Brauer--Manin unobstructed for power maps on P^2 in two cases: (1) V is a
translate of a torus. (2) V is a line and P has a preperiodic coordinate. A key
tool in the proofs is the classical Bang-Zsigmondy theorem on primitive
divisors in sequences. We also prove analogous local-global results for
dynamical systems associated to endomoprhisms of abelian varieties.Comment: 17 page
