    Vorticity wave interaction and exceptional points in shear flow instabilities

    We establish a link between vorticity wave interaction and PT\mathcal{PT}-symmetry breaking in shear flow instabilities. The minimal dynamical system for two coupled counter-propagating vorticity waves is shown to be a non-Hermitian system that exhibits a saddle-node exceptional point. The mechanism of phase-locking and mutual growth of vorticity waves is then related to the Krein collision and the breaking of PT\mathcal{PT}-symmetry through the exceptional point. The key parameter that leads the system to spontaneous PT\mathcal{PT}-symmetry breaking is the ratio between frequency detuning and coupling strength of the vorticity waves. The critical behavior near the exceptional point is described as a transition between phase-locking and phase-slip dynamics of the vorticity waves. The phase-slip dynamics lead to non-modal, transient growth of perturbations in the regime of unbroken PT\mathcal{PT}-symmetry, and the phase-slip frequency Ωkkc1/2\Omega \propto |k-k_c|^{1/2} shares the same critical exponent with the phase rigidity of system eigenvectors. The results can be readily extended to the interaction of multiple vorticity waves with multiple exceptional points and rich transient dynamics.Comment: 10 pages, 13 figure

    A water quality assessment method based on an improved grey relational analysis and particle swarm optimization multi-classification support vector machine

    Most of the water quality indicators that affect the results of river water quality assessment are gray and localized, thus the correlation between water quality indicators can be calculated using gray correlation analysis (GRA).However, GRA takes equal weighting for water quality indicators and does not take into account the weighting of the indicators. Therefore, this paper proposes a river water quality assessment method based on improved grey correlation analysis (ACGRA) andparticle swarm optimization multi-classification support vector machine (PSO-MSVM) for assessing river water environment quality. Firstly, the combination weights of water quality indicators were calculated using Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP)AHP and Criteria Importance Though Intercrieria Correlation (CRITIC)CRITIC, and then the correlation between water quality indicators was calculated for feature selection. Secondly, the PSO-MSVM model was established using the water quality indicators obtained by ACGRA as input parameters for water environment quality assessment. The river water environment assessment methods of ACGRA and PSO-MSVM were applied to the evaluation of water environment quality in different watersheds in the country. Accuracy, precision, recall and root mean square errorRMSE were also introduced as model evaluation criteria. The results show that the river water environment assessment methods based on ACGRA and PSO-MSVM can evaluate the water environment quality more accurately

    A novel motor function training assisted system for upper limbs rehabilitation

    Abstract-In this paper, we propose a novel task-oriented motor function training and assistance of upper limbs system after brain injured such as stroke based on Virtual-Reality. In this system, two kinds of training approaches are developed. One is tracking training with path-unlimited based on a mass-spring-damper force model, and the other is tracking training with path-limited based on a compound force model. Both of training approaches are same that coordination motion of two hands is needed. We want to re-examine how effective the haptic sensory and visual sensory are in training of upper limbs. Further, we enhance the effect of system through adding assistance in order to help mild stroke patients to recovery. This system is convenient and compact so that it is suitable for home-based rehabilitation

    Acute limb ischemia caused by floating thrombus in the aorta: a case report and literature review

    This report presents a patient with rheumatoid arthritis and COVID-19 infection one month earlier who experienced embolic episodes resulting in acute lower-limb ischemia from an unusual source. The blood flow was successfully restored by femoropopliteal thromboembolectomy. In determining the source of the embolism, the patient underwent electrocardiogram, transthoracic echocardiogram, and aortic CTA. The latter revealed a large, pedunculated, and mobile thrombus arising from the aortic arch and the descending thoracic aorta. Considering the patient's general health condition, we performed anticoagulation of the floating thrombus in the aortic lumen. The mechanism of aortic floating thrombosis exhibits considerable complexity. There are no standardized treatment protocols or clinical guidelines, and its treatment mainly includes open surgery, aortic endoluminal stent -graft insertion and pharmacological anticoagulation. Treatment strategy should be based on the cause of the disease and the patient's physical condition

    Aberrant Methylation of Thrombospondin-1 and Its Association with Reduced Expression in Gastric Cardia Adenocarcinoma

    Aim. Investigate the promoter methylation of the Thrombospondin-1 (TSP1) gene in gastric cardia adenocarcinoma (GCA). Methods. MSP approach, immunohistochemistry method, and RT-PCR were used respectively to examine the promoter methylation of TSP1, its protein and mRNA expression in tumors and corresponding normal tissues. The expression and concentration of TGF-β1 were examined respectively by immunohistochemistry and ELISA method. The status of T cell immunity was examined by Flow cytometry analysis. Results. TSP1 was methylated in 34/96 (35.4%) tumor specimens, which was significantly higher than that in corresponding normal tissues (P < .001). Protein and mRNA expression of TSP1 in GCA tumor tissues were reduced significantly and were associated with TSP1 methylation. The protein expression of TGF-β1 was significantly higher in tumor tissues (P < .001) and was associated with TNM stage and histological differentiation. The concentration of active and total TGF-β1 did not show significant difference between the GCA patients with hypermethylation of TSP1 and without methylation of TSP1 (P > .05). The function of T cell immunity was significantly different between the GCA patients with hypermethylation of TSP1 and without methylation of TSP1. Conclusions. Epigenetic silencing of TSP1 gene by promoter hypermethylation may play an important role in GCA

    The nestin-expressing and non-expressing neurons in rat basal forebrain display different electrophysiological properties and project to hippocampus

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Nestin-immunoreactive (nestin-ir) neurons have been identified in the medial septal/diagonal band complex (MS/DBB) of adult rat and human, but the significance of nestin expression in functional neurons is not clear. This study investigated electrophysiological properties and neurochemical phenotypes of nestin-expressing (nestin+) neurons using whole-cell recording combined with single-cell RT-PCR to explore the significance of nestin expression in functional MS/DBB neurons. The retrograde labelling and immunofluorescence were used to investigate the nestin+ neuron related circuit in the septo-hippocampal pathway.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The results of single-cell RT-PCR showed that 87.5% (35/40) of nestin+ cells expressed choline acetyltransferase mRNA (ChAT+), only 44.3% (35/79) of ChAT+ cells expressed nestin mRNA. Furthermore, none of the nestin+ cells expressed glutamic acid decarboxylases 67 (GAD<sub>67</sub>) or vesicular glutamate transporters (VGLUT) mRNA. All of the recorded nestin+ cells were excitable and demonstrated slow-firing properties, which were distinctive from those of GAD<sub>67 </sub>or VGLUT mRNA-positive neurons. These results show that the MS/DBB cholinergic neurons could be divided into nestin-expressing cholinergic neurons (NEChs) and nestin non-expressing cholinergic neurons (NNChs). Interestingly, NEChs had higher excitability and received stronger spontaneous excitatory synaptic inputs than NNChs. Retrograde labelling combined with choline acetyltransferase and nestin immunofluorescence showed that both of the NEChs and NNChs projected to hippocampus.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>These results suggest that there are two parallel cholinergic septo-hippocampal pathways that may have different functions. The significance of nestin expressing in functional neurons has been discussed.</p

    Survival of AIDS Patients Treated with Traditional Chinese Medicine in Rural Central China: A Retrospective Cohort Study, 2004–2012

    This study aimed to explore the survival of AIDS patients treated with traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) in addition to combined antiretroviral therapy (cART) and of AIDS patients treated with cART. Data of patients taking cART between 30 October 2003 and 30 October 2004 in the National TCM HIV Treatment Trial Program area were retrospectively analyzed, with follow-up from 30 October 2004 to 30 October 2012. The log-rank test was used to compare survival between the two groups. A Cox proportional hazards model was used to determine hazard ratios to identify prognostic factors. The study included 521 patients in the TCM + cART group followed up for 3548 person-years and 375 patients in the cART group followed up for 2523 person-years. Mortality rates were 3.2/100 person-years and 4.2/100 person-years in the TCM + cART and cART groups, respectively. The difference in survival was significant. After adjusting for explanatory variables, the mortality rate of AIDS patients in the cART group was 1.7 times higher than in the TCM + cART group. Male sex, older age, little education, and lower CD4 cell count were risk factors for mortality. TCM intervention in addition to cART could increase survival of AIDS patients
