    Abstract. TSH levels were measured by radioimmunoassay in the sera of 60 Belgian euthyroid subjects, aged from 4 to 32 years. A significantly higher TSH level was found in children aged from 7 to 15 years, when compared to the level obtained in adults. This increased TSH concentration and various indications of increased thyroid function during the growth spurt suggest a hyperstimulation of the thyroid at that period of life.     Gel filtration profile of circulating immunoreactive thyrotropin and subunits of myxedematous sera

    Five sera from hypothyroid patients were passed through gel filtration columns and the collected fractions were analyzed in three different radioimmunoassays (hTSH anti hTSH; hTSHβ anti pTSH; hLH α anti hLHα). For each immunological system, cross reactions were carefully studied. In the hTSH system one main peak was observed at the elution position of the entire molecule, with variable contributions in the subunits area. In the α subunit system, every profile showed an asymmetric peak corresponding roughly to the position of the entire molecule, only two sera exhibited small amounts of free α chain. In the β subunit system, a high molecular weight (100,000 or more) immunoreactive protein was present in every serum. Moreover, crossreacting intact molecule was eluted as a second peak and in four sera free β chain was detected.     Cytotoxic effects of iodide on thyroid cells: difference between rat thyroid FRTL-5 cell and primary dog thyrocyte responsiveness.

    In order to investigate whether the cytotoxic effect of iodide observed in the thyroid gland represented an apoptotic phenomenon, in vitro experiments were performed using the FRTL-5 thyroid cell line and dog thyrocytes in primary culture. These cells were exposed to iodide under various incubation conditions. Apoptosis was assessed through the analysis of DNA breakdown, i.e. the electrophoresis of internucleosomal DNA fragments generating a typical "ladder" and quantification of prelabelled DNA cleavage products. The FRTL-5 cells appeared to be sensitive only to high doses of iodide, far in excess of physiological levels. They exhibited the different characteristics of two different cell death phenomena: apoptosis and necrosis. The toxicity of iodide appeared to be partially relieved by anti-thyroid agents. This effect constitutes an additional example of the general paradigm of iodide action through oxidized intermediates.     Absence of response of immunoreactive somatomedin-C during insulin-induced hypoglycemia

    The purpose of the study was to investigate in normal subjects whether the apparent fall in somatomedin activity previously described during insulinic hypoglycemia was due to a decrease in somatomedin-C (Sm-C). Hypoglycemia was induced in 10 normal men 21-37 years old by iv injection of 0.12 U/kg of insulin 'Actrapid' Novo. Plasma glucose decreased from a basal value of 90 ± 1 mg/dl (mean ± SE) to a nadir of 25 ± 3 mg/dl at 25 min; in all subjects, the nadir was below 33 mg/dl. GH levels increased to peak values higher than 14.5 ng/ml. Basal Sm-C values averaged 0.78 ± 0.08 U/ml. No significant variations were observed for 120 min after insulin injection; mean Sm-C levels ranged from 0.74 ± 0.07 U/ml (at 90 min) to 0.88 ± 0.10 U/ml (at 30 min). These findings indicate that the fall in somatomedin activity previously reported is likely due to the release of an inhibitory factor.SCOPUS: NotDefined.jinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishe
