Macroecology of parental care in arthropods: higher mortality risk leads to higher benefits of offspring protection in tropical climates
The intensity of biotic interactions varies around the world, in such a way that mortality risk imposed by natural enemies is usually higher in the tropics. A major role of offspring attendance is protection against natural enemies, so the benefits of this behaviour should be higher in tropical regions. We tested this macroecological prediction with a meta-regression of field experiments in which the mortality of guarded and unguarded broods was compared in arthropods. Mortality of unguarded broods was higher, and parental care was more beneficial, in warmer, less seasonal environments. Moreover, in these same environments, additional lines of defence further reduced offspring mortality, implying that offspring attendance alone is not enough to deter natural enemies in tropical regions. These results help to explain the high frequency of parental care among tropical species and how biotic interactions influence the occurrence of parental care over large geographic scales. Finally, our findings reveal that additional lines of defences – an oftentimes neglected component of parental care – have an important effect on the covariation between the benefits of parental care and the climate-mediated mortality risk imposed by natural enemies
Kinematic Masses of Super Star Clusters in M82 from High-Resolution Near-Infrared Spectroscopy
Using high-resolution (R~22,000) near-infrared (1.51 -- 1.75 microns) spectra
from Keck Observatory, we measure the kinematic masses of two super star
clusters in M82. Cross-correlation of the spectra with template spectra of cool
evolved stars gives stellar velocity dispersions of sigma_r=15.9 +/- 0.8 km/s
for MGG-9 and sigma_r=11.4 +/- 0.8 km/s for MGG-11. The cluster spectra are
dominated by the light of red supergiants, and correlate most closely with
template supergiants of spectral types M0 and M4.5. We fit King models to the
observed profiles of the clusters in archival HST/NICMOS images to measure the
half-light radii. Applying the virial theorem, we determine masses of 1.5 +/-
0.3 x 10^6 M_sun for MGG-9 and 3.5 +/- 0.7 x 10^5 M_sun for MGG-11. Population
synthesis modelling suggests that MGG-9 is consistent with a standard initial
mass function, whereas MGG-11 appears to be deficient in low-mass stars
relative to a standard IMF. There is, however, evidence of mass segregation in
the clusters, in which case the virial mass estimates would represent lower

Clean Energy Infrastructure Educational Initiative
The Clean Energy Infrastructure Educational Initiative represents a collaborative effort by the University of Dayton, Wright State University and Sinclair Community College. This effort above all aimed to establish energy related programs at each of the universities while also providing outreach to the local, state-wide, and national communities. At the University of Dayton, the grant has aimed at: solidfying a newly created Master\u27s program in Renewable and Clean Energy; helping to establish and staff a regional sustainability organization for SW Ohio. As well, as the prime grantee, the University of Dayton was responsible for ensuring curricular sharing between WSU and the University of Dayton. Finally, the grant, through its support of graduate students, and through cooperation with the largest utilities in SW Ohio enabled a region-wide evaluation of over 10,000 commercial building buildings in order to identify the priority buildings in the region for energy reduction. In each, the grant has achieved success. The main focus of Wright State was to continue the development of graduate education in renewable and clean energy. Wright State has done this in a number of ways. First and foremost this was done by continuing the development of the new Renewable and Clean Energy Master\u27s Degree program at Wright State . Development tasks included: continuing development of courses for the Renewable and Clean Energy Master\u27s Degree, increasing the student enrollment, and increasing renewable and clean energy research work. The grant has enabled development and/or improvement of 7 courses. Collectively, the University of Dayton and WSU offer perhaps the most comprehensive list of courses in the renewable and clean energy area in the country. Because of this development, enrollment at WSU has increased from 4 students to 23. Secondly, the grant has helped to support student research aimed in the renewable and clean energy program. The grant helped to solidify new research in the renewable and clean energy area. The educational outreach provided as a result of the grant included activities to introduce renewable and clean energy design projects into the Mechanical and Materials Engineering senior design class, the development of a geothermal energy demonstration unit, and the development of renewable energy learning modules for high school students. Finally, this grant supported curriculum development by Sinclair Community College for seven new courses and acquisition of necessary related instrumentation and laboratory equipment. These new courses, EGV 1201 Weatherization Training, EGV 1251 Introduction to Energy Management Principles, EGV 2301 Commercial and Industrial Assessment, EGV 2351 LEED Green Associate Exam Preparation, EGV 2251 Energy Control Strategies, EGV Solar Photovoltaic Design and Installation, and EGV Solar Thermal Systems, enable Sinclair to offer complete Energy Technology Certificate and an Energy Management Degree programs. To date, 151 students have completed or are currently registered in one of the seven courses developed through this grant. With the increasing interest in the Energy Management Degree program, Sinclair has begun the procedure to have the program approved by the Ohio Board of Regents
Surface Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy of Organic Molecules on Magnetite (Fe_3O_4) Nanoparticles
Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) of species bound to environmentally relevant oxide nanoparticles is largely limited to organic molecules structurally related to catechol that facilitate a chemical enhancement of the Raman signal. Here, we report that magnetite (Fe_3O_4) nanoparticles provide a SERS signal from oxalic acid and cysteine via an electric field enhancement. Magnetite thus likely provides an oxide substrate for SERS study of any adsorbed organic molecule. This substrate combines benefits from both metal-based and chemical SERS by providing an oxide surface for studies of environmentally and catalytically relevant detailed chemical bonding information with fewer restrictions of molecular structure or binding mechanisms. Therefore, the magnetite-based SERS demonstrated here provides a new approach to establishing the surface interactions of environmentally relevant organic ligands and mineral surfaces
The factor structure of the Forms of Self-Criticising/Attacking & Self-Reassuring Scale in thirteen distinct populations
There is considerable evidence that self-criticism plays a major role in the vulnerability to and recovery from psychopathology. Methods to measure this process, and its change over time, are therefore important for research in psychopathology and well-being. This study examined the factor structure of a widely used measure, the Forms of Self-Criticising/Attacking & Self-Reassuring Scale in thirteen nonclinical samples (N = 7510) from twelve different countries: Australia (N = 319), Canada (N = 383), Switzerland (N = 230), Israel (N = 476), Italy (N = 389), Japan (N = 264), the Netherlands (N = 360), Portugal (N = 764), Slovakia (N = 1326), Taiwan (N = 417), the United Kingdom 1 (N = 1570), the United Kingdom 2 (N = 883), and USA (N = 331). This study used more advanced analyses than prior reports: a bifactor item-response theory model, a two-tier item-response theory model, and a non-parametric item-response theory (Mokken) scale analysis. Although the original three-factor solution for the FSCRS (distinguishing between Inadequate-Self, Hated-Self, and Reassured-Self) had an acceptable fit, two-tier models, with two general factors (Self-criticism and Self-reassurance) demonstrated the best fit across all samples. This study provides preliminary evidence suggesting that this two-factor structure can be used in a range of nonclinical contexts across countries and cultures. Inadequate-Self and Hated-Self might not by distinct factors in nonclinical samples. Future work may benefit from distinguishing between self-correction versus shame-based self-criticism.Peer reviewe
From clusters to queries: exploiting uncertainty in the modularity landscape of complex networks
Uncovering latent community structure in complex networks is a field that has received an enormous amount of attention. Unfortunately, whilst potentially very powerful, unsupervised methods for uncovering labels based on topology alone has been shown to suffer from several difficulties. For example, the search space for many module extraction approaches, such as the modularity maximisation algorithm, appears to be extremely glassy, with many high valued solutions that lack any real similarity to one another. However, in this paper we argue that this is not a flaw with the modularity maximisation algorithm but, rather, information that can be used to aid the context specific classification of functional relationships between vertices. Formally, we present an approach for generating a high value modularity consensus space for a network, based on the ensemble space of locally optimal modular partitions. We then use this approach to uncover latent relationships, given small query sets. The methods developed in this paper are applied to biological and social datasets with ground-truth label data, using a small number of examples used as seed sets to uncover relationships. When tested on both real and synthetic datasets our method is shown to achieve high levels of classification accuracy in a context specific manner, with results comparable to random walk with restart methods
