Adaptive Bayesian and frequentist data processing for quantum tomography
The outcome statistics of an informationally complete quantum measurement for
a system in a given state can be used to evaluate the ensemble expectation of
any linear operator in the same state, by averaging a function of the outcomes
that depends on the specific operator. Here we introduce two novel
data-processing strategies, non-linear in the frequencies, which lead to faster
convergence to theoretical expectations.Comment: 12 pages, 2 figures, revised versio
Designing an incubator of public spaces platform: Applying cybernetic principles to the co-creation of spaces
The paper is based on the experience of creating and piloting a functioning âIncubatorâ crowdsourcing platform for designing public spaces in an estate regeneration project in South London. The paper uses a cybernetics framework to analyse and present the way the platform itself was created and how issues of effectiveness, efficiency and equity were dealt with. It explores the generic qualities of interface and reviews applications of variety reduction in established crowdsourcing CS) models. It briefly presents the legal and socio-spatial parameters (like property rights) associated with the creation of the Incubators platform as well as the generic rules applicable to human-spatial relationships, based on studies exploring human-spatial interactions. Practical constraints including costs, catchments, life-span and meaningful feedback are looked into, followed by a discussion on social and political limitations associated with this form of public participation. The paper explains how those constraints where taken into account when establishing the operational parameters of the software platform and the experiences gained from the operation of the platform. Challenges and complications, such as the exclusion of actors, are identified together with the responses encountered in practice. While the Incubators platform succeeded in attracting younger planning participation demographics, older demographics were marginalised by the platformâs graphical user interface and social networking features. These findings highlight why, in spite of what it promises, âcrowdsourced urbanismâ is prone to similar traits with those of analogue participation. In that sense, creating a CS platform which could convey the grass-roots ideas of actors and users of urban spaces in an efficient way that could be applied to a broad range of planning systems, appears to be a challenge
Growth of Firms in a Fragmented Cultural Industry: Italian Commercial Art Galleries' Competitive Strategies
The growth of cultural firms is important in developing local economies, enhancing
employment, and improving urban sustainability, but it is difficult to achieve in fragmented industries
that are populated by the smallest firms and offer a particularly unfavorable context for growth. The
study takes a contingency perspective and contributes to both the literature on business strategy
in fragmented industries and that on the growth of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs)
by identifying the strategies implemented in a fragmented cultural industry, determining which of
them are associated with a firm\u2019s expected growth, and finding the few firm-specific factors that
are associated with growth. It also complements the extant literature on art galleries by looking at
them from the understudied strategic perspective. Suggestions for practitioners and policy makers
are included
Optimal hydrogen storage in sodium substituted lithium fullerides
A relevant improvement in the hydrogen storage capability of lithium fullerides is obtained by the co-intercalation of a small amount of sodium
Factors Controlling Hydrothermal Nickel and Cobalt MineralizationâSome Suggestions from Historical Ore Deposits in Italy
We compare three poorly known, historical NiâCo-bearing hydrothermal deposits in dierent geological settings in Italy: The NiâCoâAsâSbâAu-bearing Arburese vein system (SW Sardinia), the CoâNiâAs-rich Usseglio vein system (Piedmont), and the small CuâAgâCoâNiâPbâTeâSe stockwork at Piazza (Liguria). These deposits share various (mineralogical, chemical, thermal, and stable isotopic) similarities to the Five Element Vein-type ores but only the first two were economic for CoâNi. The Sardinian Ni-rich veins occur in Paleozoic basement near two Variscan plutons. Like the Co-rich Usseglio vein system, the uneconomic Piazza deposit is hosted in an ophiolite setting anomalous for Co. The Sardinian and Usseglio deposits share a polyphasic assemblage with NiâCoâAsâSbâBi followed by Ag-base metal sulfides, in siderite-rich gangue, whereas Piazza shows As-free, AgâPbâTeâSe-bearing CoâNiâCu sulfides, in prehniteâchlorite gangue. Fluid inclusions indicated CoâNi arsenide precipitation at 170 C for Usseglio, whereas for the Sardinian system late sulfide deposition occurred within the 52â126 C range. Ore fluids in both systems are NaCl-CaCl2-bearing basinal brines. The chlorite geothermometer at Piazza provides the range of 200â280 C for ore deposition from CO2-poor fluids. Enrichments in Se and negative 13C in carbonates suggest interaction with carbonaceous shales. These deposits involve issues about source rocks, controls on Co/Ni and possible role of arsenic and carbonate components towards economic mineralization
Malaria Clusters among Illegal Chinese Immigrants to Europe through Africa
Between November 2002 and March 2003, 17 cases of malaria (1 fatal) were observed in illegal Chinese immigrants who traveled to Italy through Africa. A further cluster of 12 was reported in August, 2002. Several immigrants traveled by air, making the risk of introducing sudden acute respiratory syndrome a possibility should such illegal immigrations continue
Extending the hydrogen storage limit in fullerene
Li6C60 has been chosen as the most representative system to study the hydrogenation mechanism in alkali-cluster intercalated fullerides. We present here a muon spin relaxation (mu SR) experiment that hints the chance to achieve a higher storage capacity on fullerene with respect to the values suggested in literature. Moreover, a linear relationship between the muonium adduct radical hyperfine frequency and the level of C-60 hydrogenation was found and it can be exploited to probe the C-60 hydrogenation level, giving more credit to this technique in the field of hydrogen storage materials. Projections of non-communicable disease and health care costs among HIV-positive persons in Italy and the U.S.A.: A modelling study.
BACKGROUND: Country-specific forecasts of the growing non-communicable disease (NCD) burden in ageing HIV-positive patients will be key to guide future HIV policies. We provided the first national forecasts for Italy and the Unites States of America (USA) and quantified direct cost of caring for these increasingly complex patients. METHODS AND SETTING: We adapted an individual-based model of ageing HIV-positive patients to Italy and the USA, which followed patients on HIV-treatment as they aged and developed NCDs (chronic kidney disease, diabetes, dyslipidaemia, hypertension, non-AIDS malignancies, myocardial infarctions and strokes). The models were parameterised using data on 7,469 HIV-positive patients from the Italian Cohort NaĂŻve to Antiretrovirals Foundation Study and 3,748 commercially-insured patients in the USA and extrapolated to national level using national surveillance data. RESULTS: The model predicted that mean age of HIV-positive patients will increase from 46 to 59 in Italy and from 49 to 58 in the USA in 2015-2035. The proportion of patients in Italy and the USA diagnosed with â„1 NCD is estimated to increase from 64% and 71% in 2015 to 89% and 89% by 2035, respectively, driven by moderate cardiovascular disease (CVD) (hypertension and dyslipidaemia), diabetes and malignancies in both countries. NCD treatment costs as a proportion of total direct HIV costs will increase from 11% to 23% in Italy and from 40% to 56% in the USA in 2015-2035. CONCLUSIONS: HIV patient profile in Italy and the USA is shifting to older patients diagnosed with multiple co-morbidity. This will increase NCD treatment costs and require multi-disciplinary patient management
