A method of sight reading for piano ensemble : with commentary and preparatory exercises
Thesis(D. Mus. Arts)--University of Washington, 2003This method of sight reading for Piano
Ensembles addresses a vacuum in the market for a method
specific to the instruction of Class Piano with a focus
on Sight-reading. Several aspects and techniques of
sight-reading are addressed within a collective frame of
mind in which the students can profit from that special
setting.
The first section of this paper focuses on
ethical considerations regarding Class Piano, assets and
liabilities of such a setting, the necessity of such a
method, as well as other secondary topics.
The method itself is divided into four
sections: the first addresses only rhythmic reading and
the second focus on pieces employing the five-finger
position only. The third section is comprised of
intermediate pieces and the fourth is more
comprehensive, including such important auxiliary skills
as guitar chord symbol reading, the creation of
accompaniment patterns and improvisation.
Each piece in the method is accompanied by a
brief commentary on the specific aspect of sight reading
that it focuses on, a report of how classes have
responded to that specific exercise, as well as
practical advice for performance
