Two new species of Sabaconidae (Ischyropsalidoidea) are described: Sabacon # 1
from central Alberta and British Columbia and Sabacon # 2 from Oregon. Descriptions of the
females of Sabacon astoriensis Shear 1975, from Oregon, and Sabacon sheari Cokendolpher
1984, from Oregon and Idaho, are also given

Such pre-adaptation to invasiveness allows them quickly to take advantage of abundant new resources and is why rodents are among the most successful mammalian colonizers of islands. Prairie spiders of Alberta and Saskatchewan
In the prairie ecozone of Alberta and Saskatchewan,
356 species of spiders in 2 I families have been
collected. The 10 families with the most species were
Linyphiidae (30%), Gnaphosidae (13%), Salticidae
(8%), Theridiidae (8%), Lycosidae (8%), Dictynidae
(6%), Thomisidae (6%), Araneidae (5%),
Philodromidae (5%) and Clubionidae (3%). These 10
families constituted 91% of the spider biodiversity. In
the grassland region ofthe prairie ecozone, there were
relatively more species of Gnaphosidae, Lycosidae,
Theridiidae, Thomisidae, Dictynidae and
Philodomidae and fewer Linyphiidae and Clubionidae
than for all provincial ecozones combined. The percentages
in the parkland region of the prairie ecozone
tended to be intermediate

Correlated Photons from Collective Excitations of Three-Level Atomic Ensemble
We systematically study the interaction between two quantized optical fields
and a cyclic atomic ensemble driven by a classic optical field. This so-called
atomic cyclic ensemble consists of three-level atoms with Delta-type
transitions due to the symmetry breaking, which can also be implemented in the
superconducting quantum circuit by Yu-xi Liu et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 95,
087001 (2005)]. We explore the dynamic mechanisms to creating the quantum
entanglements among photon states, and between photons and atomic collective
excitations by the coherent manipulation of the atom-photon system. It is shown
that the quantum information can be completely transferred from one quantized
optical mode to another, and the quantum information carried by the two
quantized optical fields can be stored in the collective modes of this atomic
ensemble by adiabatically controlling the classic field Rabi frequencies.Comment: 10 pages, 2 figure
Pathway map development for medical device event reporting in operating theatres: a human factors approach to improving the existing system
OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to develop the actual pathway to reporting and information transfer in operating theatres in relation to medical technology malfunction/failure. This with the aim of understanding the differences with the pathway published by NHS Improvement and identification of points for improvement. DESIGN: This is a qualitative study involving stakeholder interviews with doctors, nurses, manufacturers, medical device safety officer and Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency. SETTING: Data were collected on reporting pathway used in operating theatres. Clinical staff who took part worked in different trusts throughout UK while manufacturers provided devices in UK and EU/USA. PARTICIPANTS: Semistructured interviews were completed with 15 clinicians and 13 manufacturers. Surveys were completed by 38 clinicians and 5 manufacturers. Recognised methods of pathway development were used. The Lean Six Sigma principles adapted to healthcare were used to develop suggestions for improvement. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: To identify the differences between the set pathway to reporting and information transfer to what is occurring on a day-to-day basis as reported by staff. Identify points in the pathway where improvements could be applied. RESULTS: The developed pathway demonstrated great complexity of the current reporting system for medical devices. It identified numerous areas that give rise to problems and multiple biases in decision making. This highlighted the core issues leading to under-reporting and lack of knowledge on device performance and patient risk. Suggestions for improvement were deduced based on end user requirements and identified problems. CONCLUSIONS: This study has provided a detailed understanding of the key problem areas that exist within the current reporting system for medical devices and technology. The developed pathway sets to address the key problems to improve reporting outcomes. The identification of pathway differences between 'work as done' and 'work as imagined' can lead to development of quality improvements that could be systematically applied
Characterisation of Peptide Microarrays for Studying Antibody-Antigen Binding Using Surface Plasmon Resonance Imagery
BACKGROUND: Non-specific binding to biosensor surfaces is a major obstacle to quantitative analysis of selective retention of analytes at immobilized target molecules. Although a range of chemical antifouling monolayers has been developed to address this problem, many macromolecular interactions still remain refractory to analysis due to the prevalent high degree of non-specific binding. We describe how we use the dynamic process of the formation of self assembling monolayers and optimise physical and chemical properties thus reducing considerably non-specific binding and allowing analysis of specific binding of analytes to immobilized target molecules. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: We illustrate this approach by the production of specific protein arrays for the analysis of interactions between the 65kDa isoform of human glutamate decarboxylase (GAD65) and a human monoclonal antibody. Our data illustrate that we have effectively eliminated non-specific interactions with the surface containing the immobilised GAD65 molecules. The findings have several implications. First, this approach obviates the dubious process of background subtraction and gives access to more accurate kinetic and equilibrium values that are no longer contaminated by multiphase non-specific binding. Second, an enhanced signal to noise ratio increases not only the sensitivity but also confidence in the use of SPR to generate kinetic constants that may then be inserted into van't Hoff type analyses to provide comparative DeltaG, DeltaS and DeltaH values, making this an efficient, rapid and competitive alternative to ITC measurements used in drug and macromolecular-interaction mechanistic studies. Third, the accuracy of the measurements allows the application of more intricate interaction models than simple Langmuir monophasic binding. CONCLUSIONS: The detection and measurement of antibody binding by the type 1 diabetes autoantigen GAD65 represents an example of an antibody-antigen interaction where good structural, mechanistic and immunological data are available. Using SPRi we were able to characterise the kinetics of the interaction in greater detail than ELISA/RIA methods. Furthermore, our data indicate that SPRi is well suited to a multiplexed immunoassay using GAD65 proteins, and may be applicable to other biomarkers
Band anticrossing in GaNxSb1–x
Fourier transform infrared absorption measurements are presented from the dilute nitride semiconductor GaNSb with nitrogen incorporations between 0.2% and 1.0%. The divergence of transitions from the valence band to E– and E+ can be seen with increasing nitrogen incorporation, consistent with theoretical predictions. The GaNSb band structure has been modeled using a five-band k·p Hamiltonian and a band anticrossing fitting has been obtained using a nitrogen level of 0.78 eV above the valence band maximum and a coupling parameter of 2.6 eV
