    Paleoparadoxia from the middle Miocene of Obara, Misaki-cho, Okayama Prefecture, Japan

     The partially preserved left humerus of the Desmostylia (Mammalia) has been collected from the riverbed in Obara, Misaki-cho, Okayama Prefecture in the western Japan. This specimen can be classified to the genus Paleoparadoxia by the following features: the absence of the supratrochlear foramen; the curved disto-lateral border of the shaft in the antero-posterior view; the medio-laterally expanded flat trochlea of humerus. Moreover, this specimen can be referred to cf. P. media on the basis of its middle-sized dimensions. This is the second occurrence of Palaeoparadoxia from Okayama Prefecture

    The terminology for the molars of rhinoceorses is mainly derived from Osborn (1888). However, there is often confusion surrounding nomenclature of cheek teeth and the measuring point of the teeth. The nomenclature for the teeth of rhinoceroses and the controversy were reviewed. In this paper, I suggest the new nomenclatures that are composed of 24 elements for the upper cheek teeth and 12 ones for the lower ones and I also suggest the measuring points of teeth of the Rhinocerotidae

    Variation in the diatom community under fast ice near Syowa Station, Antarctica, during the austral summer of 1997/98

    Variations in abundance and community structure of diatoms under the fast ice near Syowa Station were investigated almost daily during the austral summer of 1997/98. Two periods of high chlorophyll a concentration were observed throughout the study : from the end of December to early January and from the middle to the end of January. Size fractionation of chlorophyll a revealed that phytoplankton during the former period consisted mostly of organisms larger than 20μm and during the latter period, 10-20μm. The large diatoms, Porosira pseudodenticulata and Pseudonitzschia turgiduloides, and small diatoms, Fragilariopsis spp., were the dominant organisms in the former and latter periods, respectively. Melting of the fast ice occurred in January, indicating a possibility that small sized diatoms were released from the ice to the water column. Accumulation of small diatoms in a sediment trap followed a decrease of their abundance in the water column. These results indicate that most of the ice algae detached from the ice sank directly to the bottom during the latter half of the austral summer

    Diatom assemblages in the surface water of the Indian Sector of the Antarctic Surface Water in summer of 1999/2000

    Abundance and species composition of diatom assemblages in surface water of the Indian Sector of the Antarctic Surface Water of the Southern Ocean were examined using samples gathered during the JARE-41 Cruise of the icebreaker Shirase in the summer of 1999/2000. On the westward leg (Leg 1), abundance of the diatom assemblage was geographically rather uniform, while species composition was different geographically in mosaic manner. Dominant species on Leg 1 were the pennate Pseudo-nitzschia spp. and the centric Dactyliosolen tenuijunctus, Chaetoceros sp. cf. dichaeta and Chaetoceros neglectus. On the eastward leg (Leg 2), abundance and species composition were different east and west of 60°E. The community to the west was large in abundance and dominated by D. tenuijunctus, while that to the east was small and dominated by the pennate Fragilariopsis species. These diatom assemblages were grouped into four clusters on Leg 1 and three on Leg 2. Mosaic distribution of the clusters was again evident on Leg 1, while rather simple east-west difference was the case on Leg 2. These geographical variations seem to be affected by local sea ice dynamics
