    The Early Steps Project: Occupational Therapy in a Pediatric Primary Care Setting

    The purpose of this study is expand on the Early STEPs project goal of identifying early developmental delays in infants and young children in a health disparate population and to collect preliminary data to lay the groundwork for a future NIH grant proposal. Individuals with less education have poor health and shorter life expectancies than well-educated individuals, and research reveals that poverty is directly related to limited education. An innovative approach is needed to overcome barriers, improve health literacy, and educate parents on effective parenting strategies for this population. Technology may be the part of the solution to this issue. Through Early STEPs, the occupational therapists will continue to refer families to early intervention and therapy services as appro­priate and follow-up to ensure that services are initiated. The OT will also determine if the parents are utilizing the Word Gap App and other provided resources to support their child\u27s development and to manage their stress. By increasing parental awareness and knowledge of language and motor skill development, the environments of underserved children will be enriched and parental stress will be reduced so that these children can have improved health and reach their full potential

    Occupational therapy (OT) educators strive to prepare entry-level practitioners who have the expertise to meet the diverse health care needs of society. A variety of instructional methods are used in the University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC) MOT program, including traditional lecture-based instruction (LBI), problem-based learning (PBL), team-based learning (TBL), and game-based learning (GBL). Research suggests that active learning strategies develop the critical thinking and problem-solving skills that are necessary for effective clinical reasoning and decision-making abilities. PBL, TBL, GBL are being successfully implemented in the UTHSC MOT Program to enhance the learning process and improve student engagement

    Frequency-Dependent Sternheimer Linear-Response Formalism for Strongly Coupled Light–Matter Systems

    The rapid progress in quantum-optical experiments, especially in the field of cavity quantum electrodynamics and nanoplasmonics, allows one to substantially modify and control chemical and physical properties of atoms, molecules, and solids by strongly coupling to the quantized field. Alongside such experimental advances has been the recent development of ab initio approaches such as quantum electrodynamical density-functional theory (QEDFT), which is capable of describing these strongly coupled systems from first principles. To investigate response properties of relatively large systems coupled to a wide range of photon modes, ab initio methods that scale well with system size become relevant. In light of this, we extend the linear-response Sternheimer approach within the framework of QEDFT to efficiently compute excited-state properties of strongly coupled light–matter systems. Using this method, we capture features of strong light–matter coupling both in the dispersion and absorption properties of a molecular system strongly coupled to the modes of a cavity. We exemplify the efficiency of the Sternheimer approach by coupling the matter system to the continuum of an electromagnetic field. We observe changes in the spectral features of the coupled system as Lorentzian line shapes turn into Fano resonances when the molecule interacts strongly with the continuum of modes. This work provides an alternative approach for computing efficiently excited-state properties of large molecular systems interacting with the quantized electromagnetic field

    A discriminating microscopy technique for the measurement of ice crystals and air bubbles size distribution in sorbets

    24ième Congrès International du Froid ICR 2015, Yokohama, JPN, 16-/08/2015 - 22/08/2015International audienceIn this work, a technique capable to distinguish between ice crystals and air bubbles in sorbets was developed in order to characterize the effect of operating conditions on their size distributions at the exit of the freezer. A pilot freezer was used to crystallize and aerate a commercial lemon sorbet mix. Crystals and bubbles sizes were measured using a light microscope technique under low temperature in a refrigerated glove box developed in the lab for that purpose. Results showed that the developed microscope technique allowed to distinguish them and to quantify their size distributions. Measurements showed that ice crystals size decreases with air flow rate while air bubbles size increases. The latter also increases with the cylinder pressure inside the scraped surface heat exchanger (SSHE)

    F-18 high alpha research vehicle: Lessons learned

    The F-18 High Alpha Research Vehicle has proven to be a useful research tool with many unique capabilities. Many of these capabilities are to assist in characterizing flight at high angles of attack, while some provide significant research in their own right. Of these, the thrust vectoring system, the unique ability to rapidly reprogram flight controls, the reprogrammable mission computer, and a reprogrammable onboard excitation system have allowed an increased utility and versatility of the research being conducted. Because of this multifaceted approach to research in the high angle of attack regime, the capabilities of the F-18 High Alpha Research Vehicle were designed to cover as many high alpha technology bases as the program would allow.
