    The algebra A(D-3)+++ dimensionally reduces to the E(D-1) symmetry algebra of (12-D)-dimensional supergravity. An infinite set of five-dimensional gravitational objects trivially embedded in D-dimensions is constructed by identifying the null geodesic motion on cosets embedded in the generalised Kac-Moody algebra A(D-3)+++. By analogy with supergravity these are bound states of dual gravitons. The metric interpolates continuously between exotic gravitational solutions generated by the action of the Geroch group but is not a continuously transforming solution of the Einstein-Hilbert action. We investigate mixed-symmetry fields in the brane sigma model, identify actions for the full interpolating bound state and understand the obstruction to the bound state being a solution of the Einstein-Hilbert action.Comment: 46 page

    On-line multiobjective automatic control system generation by evolutionary algorithms

    Evolutionary algorithms are applied to the on- line generation of servo-motor control systems. In this paper, the evolving population of controllers is evaluated at run-time via hardware in the loop, rather than on a simulated model. Disturbances are also introduced at run-time in order to pro- duce robust performance. Multiobjective optimisation of both PI and Fuzzy Logic controllers is considered. Finally an on-line implementation of Genetic Programming is presented based around the Simulink standard blockset. The on-line designed controllers are shown to be robust to both system noise and ex- ternal disturbances while still demonstrating excellent steady- state and dvnamic characteristics

    Metamodelling of multivariable engine models for real-time flight simulation.

    Sophisticated real-time distributed flight simulation environments may be constructed from a wide range of modelling and simulation tools. In this way accuracy, detail and model flexibility may be incorporated into the simulator. Distributed components may be constructed by a wide range of methods, from high level environments such as Matlab, through coded environments such as C or Fortran to hardware-in-the- loop. In this paper the Response Surface Methodology is combined with a hyper-heuristic (evolutionary algorithm) and applied to the representation of computationally intensive non-linear multivariable engine modelling. The paper investigates the potential for metamodelling (models of models) dynamic models which were previously too slow to be included in multi-component, high resolution real-time simulation environments. A multi-dimensional gas turbine model with five primary control inputs, six environmental inputs and eleven outputs is considered. An investigation has been conducted to ascertain to what extent these systems can be approximated by response surfaces with experiments which have been designed by hyper-heuristics as a first step towards automatic modelling methodology

    Metrology for Bio Systems

    The current paper addresses the advent of next generation bio system focussed Micro Nano Manufacturing Technologies (MNMT). These products and processes have placed significant new emphasis on specification and quality control systems, especially if these product and processes are to achieve economic scale up. Bio technology products and processes are a core element of MNMT and structured surfaces can be a key element in enabling bio system function. There examples of the application of such surfaces in bio systems for functions such as diverse as anti fouling and oseointegration. However a deficit exists in terms of metrology for bio structured surfaces and identifying suitable measurands and instrumentation remains a challenge for production engineers. Functional modelling would seem to point towards a better way of specifying metrology however for bio systems these are rare and often extensive function testing and clinical trials are used to inform the metrology selection. In the present paper the development of MNMT bio systems is discussed in the metrology context and several examples of developing metrology challenges. Four such bio related systems are discussed the solutions are outlined. The case studies cover traditional prosthetic implants, micro fluidic devices, cellular attachment and manufacture of cellular scaffolds

    Mechanisms and Patterns of Invasion in Macrophyte Communities

    Aquatic plants (macrophytes) are important components of freshwater ecosystems and serve numerous purposes, physical and biological, that help to structure aquatic communities. Although macrophytes represent an essential component of stable aquatic communities, invasive macrophytes may negatively alter ecosystem properties. Non-native, invasive species have been identified as a major cause of biodiversity loss and the increasing prevalence of invasive species has prompted studies to help understand their impacts and to conserve biodiversity. Studying mechanisms of invasion also gives insight into how communities are structured and assembled. This study examined mechanisms that contribute to macrophyte invasion. First, I reviewed literature concerning mechanisms of macrophyte invasion. Mechanisms identified with this review were then placed within the context of the invasion process and potential taxonomic biases were discussed. Second, a set of classic invasion hypotheses were tested, including biotic resistance, disturbance, and stress, using mixed-effects models on survey data collected from twenty-nine lakes across the United States. Finally, using the same survey data, I performed an observational test of Darwin’s Naturalization Hypothesis at a small (point) and large (lake) scale for two highly invasive macrophytes, Potamogeton crispus and Myriophyllum spicatum. Results of the first study indicated that many invasion mechanisms have been tested with fully aquatic macrophytes with varied levels of support. In addition, there is likely a taxonomic bias depending on geographic location of the invaded area. The second study indicated that biotic interaction, disturbance, and stress interact, often in non-linear ways to influence probability of an invasive species occurring at a location. However, models containing these variables explained a relatively low percentage of variation in probabilities. Finally, there was no support for Darwin’s naturalization hypothesis at either a point or lake scale. Future research should continue the search for mechanisms that allow introduced species to establish. It is likely that general principles do not exist, at least among comparisons across ecosystem types. However, ecologists should continue to search for general patterns within definable ecosystem units to increase understanding about factors contributing to invasibility

    Maintenance best practice and recent research

    This paper sets out to capture the recent discussions on maintenance best practice for artificial turf surfaces, from a SportSURF workshop in 2009, supplemented with a case study from Loughborough University. This is enhanced with recent research findings from two studies investigating damage to artificial carpet fibres caused by power brushing, and the usefulness of simple portable tools in monitoring pitch degradation and the alleviating effects of maintenance interventions. The outcomes of the maintenance seminar showed good consensus for frequency and type of maintenance practice, with a useful rule of thumb of one hour of maintenance for every 10 hours of use of the surface system. Maintenance costs of artificial turf should be expected to be similar to natural turf however, but expressed as ‘per hour of use’ are much lower. Damage caused by power brushing, from a laboratory study, was found to be minimal in terms of fibre splits or breaks, for three different standard brush systems and three different carpet systems. Portable monitoring tools, such as the Clegg hammer and rotational traction devices may be suited to monitoring two important pitch properties over time. These relatively low cost tools are potentially useful to manage aspects regarding infill depth and mobility, frozen ground and advice on intervention maintenance

    Macrophyte Re-establishment and Deductive GIS Modeling to Identify Planting Locations for Fish Habitat Enhancement Projects

    Aquatic macrophytes are important components in structuring aquatic communities because they provide physical and biological functions that contribute to the stability of the ecosystem. Macrophytes provide the basis for the aquatic food-web and also provide habitat and refugia for aquatic fauna. In systems that lack macrophytes, anthropogenic re-establishment may be a feasible management approach to improve aquatic ecosystems. Understanding environmental factors that regulate colonization, dispersal, and persistence of aquatic macrophytes is pertinent to re-establishment efforts. The purpose of this study is to test hypotheses regarding success of macrophyte re-establishment efforts in Little Bear Creek Reservoir, Alabama using different macrophyte species, water depths, plant patch size and protection against herbivores at planting sites. In addition, a deductive GIS model is used to predict suitable areas to focus re-establishment efforts. Knowledge generated from hypothesis testing and application of GIS modeling provides novel information and tools for managing aquatic ecosystems

After examining the historical backdrop of the consumer\u27s social role in both the United States and Japan, the authors argue that the new law cannot create a strict liability system like that of the United States in Japan, because the unique Japanese cultural context and its manipulation discourage the use of the legal process to advance consumer interests
