    Properties of a CDP-Diglyceride Hydrolase from Guinea Pig Brain

    Enzymatic hydrolysis of the pyrophosphate bond of CDP-diglyceride (CDP-DG), previously shown to occur in bacteria, is demonstrable in mammalian tissues. Activity was enriched in a lysosomal fraction obtained from guinea pig cerebral cortex and was purified 92-fold relative to the homogenate by a combination of XM-300 ultrafiltration and DEAE-cellulose column chromatography. When incubated with CDP-dipalmitin, the purified enzyme produced stoichiometric amounts of CMP and phosphatidate. dCDP-DG served as a substrate, while ADP-DG was an inhibitor, as were 5′-AMP and 5′-dAMP. CDP-DG hydrolysis was not affected by the presence of excess amounts of CDP-choline, CDP-glycerol, sodium pyrophosphate, or cyclic 3′,5′-AMP.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/65407/1/j.1471-4159.1981.tb01691.x.pd

    In this paper we propose a method for a quantitative estimation of the decision maker's knowledge in the context of the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) in cases, where the judgment matrix is inconsistent. We show that the matrix of deviation from the transitivity condition corresponds to the rate matrix for transaction costs in the financial market. For the quantitative estimation of the decision maker's professionalism, we apply the Ising model and thermodynamics tools.Comment: 17 page

    Consortium of Otolaryngology Journal Editors: Collegiality and Contributions

    There is a new tradition in the otolaryngology publishing community that is unique to our specialty, so far as we know. Editors-in-Chief of otolaryngology journals in the United States, and intermittently some of our international colleagues such as the Editor of the Journal of Laryngology and Otology (England), sit down together twice a year to discuss topics of mutual interest, maintain lines of communication and friendships, and share perspectives on the evolution of otolaryngology—head and neck surgery and needs that our journals might help address. To establish these collegial, uninhibited, informative, and productive meetings, Dr Robert Ruben proposed the idea of a Consortium of Otolaryngology Journal Editors. During the consortium’s formative years, the organization was solidified and supported by Jonas Johnson who was Editor-in-Chief of Laryngoscope from 2003 to 2008 and whose journal funded our meetings. The editors have discussed many topics including standardization of terminology, duplicate publication and plagiarism, increasing physician interest and involvement in peer-review, peer-review education, new publication models and their implications for our colleagues, support for resident presentations at scientific meetings, innovations at individual journals that might prove useful for other journals, increasing international involvement in our journals, predatory journals, and other topics

    Tree-mycorrhizal associations detected remotely from canopy spectral properties

    A central challenge in global ecology is the identification of key functional processes in ecosystems that scale, but do not require, data for individual species across landscapes. Given that nearly all tree species form symbiotic relationships with one of two types of mycorrhizal fungi – arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) and ectomycorrhizal (ECM) fungi – and that AM- and ECM-dominated forests often have distinct nutrient economies, the detection and mapping of mycorrhizae over large areas could provide valuable insights about fundamental ecosystem processes such as nutrient cycling, species interactions, and overall forest productivity. We explored remotely sensed tree canopy spectral properties to detect underlying mycorrhizal association across a gradient of AM- and ECM-dominated forest plots. Statistical mining of reflectance and reflectance derivatives across moderate/high-resolution Landsat data revealed distinctly unique phenological signals that differentiated AM and ECM associations. This approach was trained and validated against measurements of tree species and mycorrhizal association across ~130 000 trees throughout the temperate United States. We were able to predict 77% of the variation in mycorrhizal association distribution within the forest plots (P \u3c 0.001). The implications for this work move us toward mapping mycorrhizal association globally and advancing our understanding of biogeochemical cycling and other ecosystem processes
