The black-white test score gap widens with age?

Abstract We re-examine the theoretical concept of a production function for cognitive achievement, and argue that an indirect production function that depends upon the variables that constrain parents' choices is both more tractable from an econometric point of view, and more interesting from an economic point of view than is a direct production function that depends upon a detailed list of direct inputs such as number of books in the household. We estimate flexible econometric models of indirect production functions for two achievement measures from the Woodcock-Johnson Revised battery, using data from two waves of the Child Development Supplement to the PSID. Elasticities of achievement measures with respect to family income and parents' educational levels are positive and significant. Gaps between scores of black and white children narrow or remain constant as children grow older, a result that differs from previous findings in the literature. The elasticities of achievement scores with respect to family income are substantially higher for children of black families, and there are some notable difference in elasticities with respect to parents' educational levels across blacks and whites.education; cognitive achievement; test score gaps

Angelo Monforte’s Letter to Peter of Aragon and the Early Dissemination of Decembrio’s Translation of Curtius Rufus

This note establishes that in 1438 Angelo Monforte, count of Campobasso, sent to Prince Peter of Aragon a copy of Pier Candido Decembrio’s Italian version of Curtius Rufus, thus documenting the transmission of Decembrio’s work from Milan to Naples. This copy could have been the source of Alfonso de Liñán’s translation into Spanish of Decembrio’s text

Relat autobiogràfic: la pedagogia de les emocions a l’educació infantil

Setzenes Jornades de Foment de la Investigació (Any 2011)Dels 0 als 6 anys els infants ja consoliden els primers aprenentatges, sent l’educació emocional d’aquesta etapa la base per al seu desenvolupament futur. Per tant, l’educació emocional del mestre té una influència directa en el seu propi benestar i en el benestar del seu alumnat. Aquest article exposa la investigació que ha dut a terme l’autora per indagar en com cultivar la seua pròpia competència emocional i, d’aquesta manera, poder conèixer la seua identitat i la del seu alumnat. Així doncs, la investigadora inicia un treball d’autoconeixement personal per indagar sobre com l’autoformació en educació emocional influeix en la pròpia construcció d’identitats i en la seua actuació docent i com d’ací es deriven actuacions pedagògiques i noves propostes formatives. Per tal fi empra la metodologia autobiogràfica narrativa junt a una sèrie de tècniques com la respiració, la meditació i el Reiki que li permeten l’autoconeixement i d’una sèrie d’estratègies com el diari d’aula, els biogrames i les fotos que li permeten recollir el treball d’introspecció realitzat i valorar finalment com influeix en la seua identitat i actuació docent

El castell d'Arenys d'Empordà i la família Palol

L’estudi de dos documents procedents dels fons de la casa Ferrer Noguer de Besalú, relacionats amb la família Palol d’Arenys d’Empordà, permet aprofundir en la genealogia de les famílies que estigueren en possessió del castell d’Arenys d’Empordà: els Palol, primer, els Vivet, els Cruïlles, Ferrer, més tard, i, finalment, els Sarrà. Els dos documents aporten més informació sobre la família Palol, coneguda sobretot per la sentència arbitral que posà fi a l’enfrontament entre Montserrat de Palol i els seus vassalls el 1576. Un, recull vint-i-quatre documents cosits en format pergamí aplegats entre (1312-1328), reconeixements de diversos habitants de Valldevià a Dalmau de Palol, senyor d’Arenys i de Valldevià, de pagar-li diversos censos anuals, i un imprès d’al·legacions presentat en el procés pel fideïcomís imposat per Miquel de Palol el 1545.The study of two documents coming from the collection of the house Ferrer Noguer of Besalu, which was related to the Palol family fromArenys d’Empordà, allows us to pursue the genealogy of the families that were in possession of the castle of Arenys d’Empordà: first the Palol family, followed by the Vivet, Cruilles and Ferrer families and finally the Sarrà family. The two documents provide us with more information about the Palol family that was known mainly by the arbitration agreement that ended the confrontation betweenMontserrat de Palol and his vassals in 1576. One of the documents is a compilation of 24 documents sawed in parchment format that were collected between 1312 and 1328, acknowledgements from several inhabitants of Valldevià to Dalmau de Palol, landowner of Arenys and Valldevià, where they stated having paid several annual land rents, and an allegation form presented during the process of a trust deed byMiquel de Palol in 1545
