Modulated model predictive control with optimized overmodulation
Finite Set Model Predictive Control (FS-MPC) has many advantages, such as a fast dynamic response and an intuitive implementation. For these reasons, it has been thoroughly researched during the last decade. However, the wave form produced by FS-MPC has a switching component whose spread spectrum remains a major disadvantage of the strategy. This paper discusses a modulated model predictive control that guarantees a spectrum switching frequency in the linear modulation range and extends its optimized response to the overmodulation region. Due to the equivalent high gain of the predictive control, and to the limit on the voltage actuation of the power converter, it is expected that the actuation voltage will enter the overmodulation region during large reference changes or in response to load impacts. An optimized overmodulation strategy that converges towards FS-MPC’s response for large tracking errors is proposed for this situation. This technique seamlessly combines PWM’s good steadystate switching performance with FS-MPC’s high dynamic response during large transients. The constant switching frequency is achieved by incorporating modulation of the predicted current vectors in the model predictive control of the currents in a similar fashion as conventional Space-Vector Pulse Width Modulation (SV-PWM) is used to synthesize an arbitrary voltage reference. Experimental results showing the proposed strategy’s good steady-state switching performance, its FS-MPC-like transient response and the seamless transition between modes of operation are presented for a permanent magnet synchronous machine drive
Direct flux and current vector control for induction motor drives using model predictive control theory
The study presents the direct flux and current vector control of an induction motor (IM) drive, which is a relatively newer and promising control strategy, through the use of model predictive control (MPC) techniques. The results highlight that the fast flux control nature of direct flux control strategy is further enhanced by MPC. Predictive control is applied in two of its variants, namely the finite control set and modulated MPC, and the advantages and limitations of the two are underlined. This work also highlights, through experimental results, the importance of prioritising the flux part of the cost function which is particularly significant in the case of an IM drive. The performance of the MPC-based approach is compared with the proportional-integral controller, which also prioritises the flux control loop, under various operating regions of the drive such as in the flux-weakening regime. Simulations show the performance expected with different control strategies which is then verified through experiments
Interleukin-2 gene transfer into human transitional cell carcinoma of the urinary bladder
Transitional cell carcinoma of the bladder is one of the human cancers most responsive to immunotherapy, and local interleukin-2 (IL-2) production appears to be an important requirement for immunotherapy to be effective. In this study, we engineered two human bladder cancer cell lines (RT112 and EJ) to constitutively release human IL-2 by retroviral vector-mediated gene transfer. Following infection and selection, stable and consistent production of biologically active IL-2 was demonstrated at both the mRNA and the protein level. Morphology, in vitro growth rate and proliferation, as well as other cytokine gene mRNA or membrane adhesion receptor expression, were not altered in IL-2 transduced cells as compared to their parental or control vector-infected counterparts. Moreover, IL-2 engineered cells lost their tumorigenicity into nu/nu mice and the mechanism of rejection appeared to involve multiple host effector cell populations, among which a prominent role was played by neutrophils and radiosensitive cells. Induction of reactive oxygen intermediates in human monocytes by tumour cells and their role in spontaneous monocyte cytotoxicity
The present study examined the ability of human monocytes to produce reactive oxygen intermediates after a contact with tumour cells. Monocytes generated oxygen radicals, as measured by luminol-enhanced chemiluminescence and superoxide anion production, after stimulation with the tumour, but not with untransformed, cells. The use of specific oxygen radical scavengers and inhibitors, superoxide dismutase, catalase, dimethyl sulphoxide and deferoxamine as well as the myeloperoxidase inhibitor 4-aminobenzoic acid hydrazide, indicated that chemiluminescence was dependent on the production of superoxide anion and hydroxyl radical and the presence of myeloperoxidase. The tumour cell-induced chemiluminescent response of monocytes showed different kinetics from that seen after activation of monocytes with phorbol ester. These results indicate that human monocytes can be directly stimulated by tumour cells for reactive oxygen intermediate production. Spontaneous monocyte-mediated cytotoxicity towards cancer cells was inhibited by superoxide dismutase, catalase, deferoxamine and hydrazide, implicating the role of superoxide anion, hydrogen peroxide, hydroxyl radical and hypohalite. We wish to suggest that so-called ‘spontaneous’ tumoricidal capacity of freshly isolated human monocytes may in fact be an inducible event associated with generation of reactive oxygen intermediates and perhaps other toxic mediators, resulting from a contact of monocytes with tumour cells. © 1999 Cancer Research Campaig
An Ethical Black Box for Social Robots: a draft Open Standard
This paper introduces a draft open standard for the robot equivalent of an
aircraft flight data recorder, which we call an ethical black box. This is a
device, or software module, capable of securely recording operational data
(sensor, actuator and control decisions) for a social robot, in order to
support the investigation of accidents or near-miss incidents. The open
standard, presented as an annex to this paper, is offered as a first draft for
discussion within the robot ethics community. Our intention is to publish
further drafts following feedback, in the hope that the standard will become a
useful reference for social robot designers, operators and robot
