Non-gastric marginal zone B cell lymphoma: Clinicopathologic features and treatment results
The optimal treatment strategy and outcome of non-gastric marginal zone lymphoma (MZL) remains undefined. The role of rituximab and fludarabine in MZL has not been critically appraised and compared with conventional chemotherapy. We retrospectively analyzed 81 consecutive patients with non-gastric MZL (mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue lymphoma, n = 66; splenic MZL, n = 11; nodal MZL, n = 4). As a group, the treatment results were favorable, with an overall response rate of 87% and a complete response (CR) rate of 73%. The CR rate was similar for conventional chemotherapy, and rituximab- and fludarabine-containing regimens. However, the relapse rate was significantly decreased in rituximab- and fludarabine-containing regimens. The use of rituximab and fludarabine was associated with acceptable side effects. For splenic MZL, splenectomy was significantly associated with a superior CR rate. Early stage, good performance status, and low international prognostic index risk scores significantly impacted on CR rate and survivals. Rituximab and fludarabine were safe for non-gastric MZL and resulted in more durable remissions. © 2011 The Author(s).published_or_final_versionSpringer Open Choice, 21 Feb 201
Origin of the large phonon band-gap in SrTiO3 and the vibrational signatures of ferroelectricity in ATiO3 perovskite: First principles lattice dynamics and inelastic neutron scattering of PbTiO3, BaTiO3 and SrTiO3
We report first principles density functional perturbation theory
calculations and inelastic neutron scattering measurements of the phonon
density of states, dispersion relations and electromechanical response of
PbTiO3, BaTiO3 and SrTiO3. The phonon density-of-states of the quantum
paraelectric SrTiO3 is found to be fundamentally distinct from that of
ferroelectric PbTiO3 and BaTiO3 with a large 70-90 meV phonon band-gap. The
phonon dispersion and electromechanical response of PbTiO3 reveal giant
anisotropies. The interplay of covalent bonding and ferroelectricity, strongly
modulates the electromechanical response and give rise to spectacular
signatures in the phonon spectra. The computed charge densities have been used
to study the bonding in these perovskites. Distinct bonding characteristics in
the ferroelectric and paraelectric phases give rise to spectacular vibrational
signatures. While a large phonon band-gap in ATiO3 perovskites seems a
characteristic of quantum paraelectrics, anisotropy of the phonon spectra
correlates well with ferroelectric strength. These correlations between the
phonon spectra and ferroelectricity, can guide future efforts at custom
designing still more effective piezoelectrics for applications. These results

Epigenetic inactivation of the miR-34a in hematological malignancies
miR-34a is a transcriptional target of p53 and implicated in carcinogenesis. We studied the role of miR-34a methylation in a panel of hematological malignancies including acute leukemia [acute myeloid leukemia (AML) and acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL)], chronic leukemia [chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) and chronic myeloid leukemia (CML)], multiple myeloma (MM) and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL). The methylation status of miR-34a promoter was studied in 12 cell lines and 188 diagnostic samples by methylation-specific polymerase chain reaction. miR-34a promoter was unmethylated in normal controls but methylated in 75% lymphoma and 37% myeloma cell lines. Hypomethylating treatment led to re-expression of pri-miR-34a transcript in lymphoma cells with homozygous miR-34a methylation. In primary samples at diagnosis, miR-34a methylation was detected in 4% CLL, 5.5% MM samples and 18.8% of NHL at diagnosis but none of ALL, AML and CML (P = 0.011). In MM patients with paired samples, miR-34a methylation status remained unchanged at progression. Amongst lymphoid malignancies, miR-34a was preferentially methylated in NHL (P = 0.018), in particular natural killer (NK)/T-cell lymphoma. In conclusion, amongst hematological malignancies, miR-34a methylation is preferentially hypermethylated in NHL, in particular NK/T-cell lymphoma, in a tumor-specific manner, therefore the role of miR-34a in lymphomagenesis warrants further study. © The Author 2010. The optical response of Ba_{1-x}K_xBiO_3: Evidence for an unusual coupling mechanism of superconductivity?
We have analysed optical reflectivity data for Ba_{1-x}K_xBiO_3 in the
far-infrared region using Migdal-Eliashberg theory and found it inconsistent
with standard electron-phonon coupling: Whereas the superconducting state data
could be explained using moderate coupling, \lambda=0.7, the normal state
properties indicate \lambda \le 0.2. We have found that such behaviour could be
understood using a simple model consisting of weak standard electron-phonon
coupling plus weak coupling to an unspecified high energy excitation near 0.4
eV. This model is found to be in general agreement with the reflectivity data,
except for the predicted superconducting gap size. The additional high energy
excitation suggests that the dominant coupling mechanism in Ba_{1-x}K_xBiO_3 is

Linear Response Calculations of Spin Fluctuations
A variational formulation of the time--dependent linear response based on the
Sternheimer method is developed in order to make practical ab initio
calculations of dynamical spin susceptibilities of solids. Using gradient
density functional and a muffin-tin-orbital representation, the efficiency of
the approach is demonstrated by applications to selected magnetic and strongly
paramagnetic metals. The results are found to be consistent with experiment and
