New Province Records of Southern Ontario Caddisflies (Trichoptera)

Thirty-two caddisfly species are reported from Ontario for the first time, including 24 in the family Hydroptilidae, three in the Hydropsychidae, and one each in the Leptoceridae, Limnephilidae, Molannidae, and Polycentropodidae. The known caddisfly richness of the province increases from 309 to 341 species, including a doubling of the known hydroptilid fauna. Many more species undoubtedly remain to be discovered in this large and relatively undisturbed province

Parental perceptions of the effects of exercise on behavior in children and adolescents with ADHD

AbstractBackgroundAnecdotally, parents often report that children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) who engage in regular physical activity (PA) experience positive behavioral changes. The purpose of this study was to examine this anecdotal relationship to provide preliminary evidence relevant to the potential benefits of PA on ADHD symptoms.MethodsParents (n = 68) of children diagnosed with ADHD completed an Internet survey assessing perceptions of how PA influences their child's symptoms.ResultsA significantly greater percentage of parents reported that regular PA positively impacted symptoms. However, there were no uniform effects for all types of ADHD symptoms. The results indicate that there may be more positive benefits for symptoms of inattention and hyperactivity than for those of impulsivity.ConclusionThis is the first study to empirically document parents' perceptions of how PA influences ADHD and suggests that PA can be a viable strategy for reducing symptoms. PA may have greater benefits for specific symptoms of ADHD, providing critical information for developing PA interventions for children and adolescents

A review of the genus Agapetus Curtis (Trichoptera: Glossosomatidae) in eastern and central North America, with description of 12 new species

Twenty-nine species of caddisflies in the genus Agapetus Curtis in eastern and central North America are reviewed. Twelve are described as new species: Agapetus aphallus (known only from females); Agapetus baueri, Agapetus flinti, Agapetus harrisi, Agapetus hesperus, Agapetus ibis, Agapetus kirchneri, Agapetus meridionalis, Agapetus pegram, Agapetus ruiteri, Agapetus stylifer, and Agapetus tricornutus. Agapetus rossi Denning 1941 is recognized as a junior subjective synonym of Agapetus walkeri (Betten and Mosely 1940), new synonym. A key to males is provided, and species’ distributions are mapped

A \u27New\u27 Hybrid Minnow

The specimen of a hybrid between the minnows Chrosomus erythrogaster and Dionda nubila is described. Taken in southeastern Minnesota near the known northernmost distributional limits of both parent species, this hybrid is between the parental extremes in most of the anatomical features examined
