    3D Supergravity from wrapped D3-branes

    Get PDF
AdS_3 solutions dual to N = (0,2) SCFTs arise when D3-branes wrap Kahler two-cycles in manifolds with SU(4) holonomy. Here we review known AdS_3 solutions and identify the corresponding three-dimensional gauged supergravities, solutions of which uplift to type IIB supergravity. In particular, we discuss gauged supergravities dual to twisted compactifications on Riemann surfaces of both N=4 SYM and N =1 SCFTs with Sasaki-Einstein duals. We check in each case that c-extremization gives the exact central charge and R symmetry. For completeness, we also study AdS_3 solutions from intersecting D3-branes, generalise recent KK reductions of Detournay & Guica and identify the underlying gauged supergravities. Finally, we discuss examples of null-warped AdS_3 solutions to three-dimensional gauged supergravity, all of which embed in string theory.Comment: v1 48 pages; v2 two references added, to appear in JHE

Hints of 5d Fixed Point Theories from Non-Abelian T-duality

    Get PDF
In this paper we investigate the properties of the putative 5d fixed point theory that should be dual, through the holographic correspondence, to the new supersymmetric AdS(6) solution constructed in Lozano et al. This solution is the result of a non-Abelian T-duality transformation on the known supersymmetric AdS(6) solution of massive Type IIA. The analysis of the charge quantization conditions seems to put constraints on the global properties of the background, which, combined with the information extracted from considering probe branes, suggests a 2-node quiver candidate for the dual CFT.Comment: v2, typos corrected, comments added, to appear in JHE

From Breadwinner to Breadmaker: The Experiences of Stay- at- Home Fathers in Ireland Today

The experience and views of men who have become stay-at-home fathers has been an area of research that has, only in recent decades, become popular to study. This study highlights that there is a dearth of literature from an Irish perspective and that little is known about the topic.Internationally, research has shown that there appears to be a strong link between masculine identity and the realm of paid employment. It also shows that fathers struggle in their attempts to balance being involved fathers while maintaining a foothold in paid employment. The literature highlights that stay-at-home fathers begin to break down traditional notions that the domestic sphere is solely the domain of women. Findings from semi-structured interviews are presented and discussed showing that the experiences of stay-at-home fathers have a dramatic impact on fathers’ emotions. It also highlighted that, although the fathers felt them being at home was extremely beneficial to the father/child relationship, they had a strong desire to return to paid employment. Stay-at-home fathers appear to struggle with arenegotiation of their role within their family with many having had little experience of ‘caring’ tasks prior to this time. Recommendations are presented in view of the current research and the findings of this study. The experience and views of men who have become stay-at-home fathers has been an area ofresearch that has, only in recent decades, become popular to study. Gleaning Secrets from the Transverse Profiles of AGN jets

Both the emission properties and evolution of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) radio jets are dependent on the magnetic fields that thread them. A better understanding of these magnetic fields is therefore important in helping our understanding of jets in AGN. Several observations of jets have suggested that, on parsec scales, the jet magnetic field may have a significant helical component. Using a model first proposed by Laing and developed by Papageorgiou and Cawthorne, all of the above observations can be reproduced by varying only the helical pitch angle of the magnetic field and the line of sight angle. In order to reduce the total polarization to agree with observed values, a tangled magnetic field component is also introduced to the model, via another parameter, the degree of entanglement. We are in the process of comparing data from observations of several AGN with this model, making it possible to derive estimates of the helical pitch angle, the viewing angle and the degree of entanglement for these jets in the framework of this model. The observed profiles are compared with a set of theoretical profiles. This proves to be an objective approach to profile fitting that should enable analysis of a large number of AGN jets, making it possible to look for trends. Results for Mrk501 are presented

    Supersymmetric AdS_6 via T-duality

We present a new supersymmetric AdS_6 solution of type IIB supergravity with SU(2) isometry. Through the AdS/CFT correspondence, this has potentially very interesting implications for 5d fixed point theories. This solution is the result of a non-Abelian T-duality on the known supersymmetric AdS_6 solution of massive IIA. The SU(2) R-symmetry is untouched, leading to sixteen supercharges and preserved supersymmetry.Comment: 4 pages, published versio

On a Ramsey-type problem of Erd\H{o}s and Pach

In this paper we show that there exists a constant C>0C>0 such that for any graph GG on CklnkCk\ln k vertices either GG or its complement Gˉ\bar{G} has an induced subgraph on kk vertices with minimum degree at least 12(k1)\frac12(k-1). This affirmatively answers a question of Erd\H{o}s and Pach from 1983.Comment: 9 pages; in 2nd version, Eoin Long has been added as co-author and the main result is improved by a log k facto
