    Mind Over Matter: Altered States of Consciousness and the Narrative Rationalization of Ecstatic Visions in the Apocalypse of John

    This thesis postulates John’s apocalypse is the author’s attempt to create a rational narrative from a series of ecstatic trance visions which he experienced in an altered state of consciousness. These involved: (1) a feeling of being “influenced” or possessed by the Spirit of God, and (2) a subsequent sensation where his “spirit” was separated from his body and able to move freely in the spirit world. I propose that taking these experiences provisionally at face value is a crucial hermeneutical key to understanding the meaning of this text, as it was perceived by John and the early proto-Christian community he was addressing. Tackling John’s religious experiences phenomenologically opens up a line of inquiry that has thus far been handled poorly by strictly literary epistemological paradigms. Little of substance has been said about the psychological function and cognitive causality behind John’s text and apocalyptic literature generally. What little research that has been published in this regard has approached the question comfortably within the confines of source and genre criticism. This thesis systematically breaks down the interpretive issues surrounding the double occurrence of the phrase evgeno,mhn evn pneu,mati (“I was in the spirit”) in Rev 1:10 and 4:2, to achieve a degree of clarity in regards to this critical experiential aspect of John’s text. From that foundation, I proceed to provide an alternative philological hypothesis taking into account the polysemic quality of John’s symbolic language in an effort to resolve the interpretive tension between the separate (but nonetheless complimentary) meanings of the phrase as it occurs in Rev 1:10 and 4:2. From there, I have a sustained look at the neurobiological aspects of altered states of consciousness (ASCs), and the mind-body problems associated with ecstatic trance and out-of-body experiences (OBEs). To better qualify these experiences on an experiential and physical level, I adopt an interdisciplinary approach that combines philology with anthropology and neurobiology. Here, I place John’s experiences on a diachronic trajectory that begins with the Jewish prophets (with an emphasis on Ezekiel) and ends by comparing and contrasting the physical and neurotheological linguistic elements of John’s experience with another New Testament ecstatic named Paul. I conclude the thesis by exploring a broad anthropological paradigm for ecstatic experiences called the shamanic complex and establish that John’s experiences strongly correlate with that model

    Activation of the Janus Kinase 2/Signal Transducer and Activator of Transcription 3 (JAK2/STAT3) pathway is known to play a key role in cardiogenesis and to afford cardioprotection against ischemia-reperfusion in adult. However, involvement of JAK2/STAT3 pathway and its interaction with other signaling pathways in developing heart transiently submitted to anoxia remains to be explored. Hearts isolated from 4-day-old chick embryos were submitted to anoxia (30 min) and reoxygenation (80 min) with or without the antioxidant MPG, the JAK2/STAT3 inhibitor AG490 or the PhosphoInositide-3-Kinase (PI3K)/Akt inhibitor LY-294002. Time course of phosphorylation of STAT3α(tyrosine705) and Reperfusion Injury Salvage Kinase (RISK) proteins [PI3K, Akt, Glycogen Synthase Kinase 3beta (GSK3beta), Extracellular signal-Regulated Kinase 2 (ERK2)] was determined in homogenate and in enriched nuclear and cytoplasmic fractions of the ventricle. STAT3 DNA-binding was determined. The chrono-, dromo- and inotropic disturbances were also investigated by electrocardiogram and mechanical recordings. Phosphorylation of STAT3α(tyr705) was increased by reoxygenation, reduced (~50%) by MPG or AG490 but not affected by LY-294002. STAT3 and GSK3beta were detected both in nuclear and cytoplasmic fractions while PI3K, Akt and ERK2 were restricted to cytoplasm. Reoxygenation led to nuclear accumulation of STAT3 but unexpectedly without DNA-binding. AG490 decreased the reoxygenation-induced phosphorylation of Akt and ERK2 and phosphorylation/inhibition of GSK3beta in the nucleus, exclusively. Inhibition of JAK2/STAT3 delayed recovery of atrial rate, worsened variability of cardiac cycle length and prolonged arrhythmias as compared to control hearts. Thus, besides its nuclear translocation without transcriptional activity, oxyradicals-activated STAT3α can rapidly interact with RISK proteins present in nucleus and cytoplasm, without dual interaction, and reduce the anoxia-reoxygenation-induced arrhythmias in the embryonic heart

    Taxes and Income Distribution in Chile: Some Unpleasant Redistributive Arithmetic

    This paper quantifies the direct impact of taxes on income distribution at the household level in Chile and estimates the distributional effect of several changes in the tax structure. We find that income distributions before and after taxes are very similar (Gini coefficients of 0.448 and 0.496, respectively). Moreover, radical modifications of the tax structure, such as raising the value added tax from 18 to 25% or substituting a 20% flat tax for the present progressive income tax affect the after-tax distribution only slightly. We present some arithmetic showing that the scope for direct income redistribution through progressivity of the tax system is rather limited. By contrast, for parameter values observed in Chile, and possibly in most developing countries, the targeting of expenditures and the level of the average tax rate are far more important determinants of income distribution after government transfers. Thus, a high-yield proportional tax can have a far bigger equalizing impact than a low-yield progressive tax. Moreover, a simple model shows that the optimal tax system is biased against progressive taxes and towards proportional taxes, with a bias that grows with the degree of inequality of pre-tax incomes.

    Climate Vulnerability and the Cost of Debt

    We use indices from the Notre Dame Global Adaptation Initiative to investigate the impact of climate vulnerability on bond yields. Our methodology invokes panel ordinary least squares with robust standard errors and principal component analysis. The latter serves to address the multicollinearity between a set of vulnerability measures. We find that countries with higher exposure to climate vulnerability, such as the member countries of the V20 climate vulnerable forum, exhibit 1.174 percent higher cost of debt on average. This effect is significant after accounting for a set of macroeconomic controls. Specifically, we estimate the incremental debt cost due to higher climate vulnerability, for the V20 countries, to have exceeded USD 62 billion over the last ten years. In other words, for every ten dollars they pay in interest cost, they pay another dollar for being climate vulnerable. We also find that a measure of social readiness, which includes education and infrastructure, has a negative and significant effect on bond yields, implying that social and physical investments can mitigate climate risk related debt costs and help to stabilize the cost of debt for vulnerable countries
