    The Change of Job Opportunities: the Role of Computerization and Institutions

    This paper studies the pattern of job opportunities over the last two decades in European countries. We find that the share of high-skilled jobs have been expanding over time, while the share of medium- skilled jobs have been declining. These changes are in line with the US patterns and, according to the previous literature, they come from recent technological changes. However, our data show an interesting difference between the US and Europe: in Europe there is not any increase in the share of low-skilled employment. Moreover, we find that the difference between the proportion of employment hired in low-skilled and medium-skilled jobs is negatively correlated with both the unemployment rate and the degree of employment protection in the labour market. We propose a theoretical model to study the effects of a technological shock on the employment structure in a unionized economy. By accounting for the collective bargaining process, our model may fit Continental Europe better than the previous ones. We conclude that the definition of the union policy is crucial in order to explain observed cross-country heterogeneity in low-skilled employment.

    Renormalization-group at criticality and complete analyticity of constrained models: a numerical study

    We study the majority rule transformation applied to the Gibbs measure for the 2--D Ising model at the critical point. The aim is to show that the renormalized hamiltonian is well defined in the sense that the renormalized measure is Gibbsian. We analyze the validity of Dobrushin-Shlosman Uniqueness (DSU) finite-size condition for the "constrained models" corresponding to different configurations of the "image" system. It is known that DSU implies, in our 2--D case, complete analyticity from which, as it has been recently shown by Haller and Kennedy, Gibbsianness follows. We introduce a Monte Carlo algorithm to compute an upper bound to Vasserstein distance (appearing in DSU) between finite volume Gibbs measures with different boundary conditions. We get strong numerical evidence that indeed DSU condition is verified for a large enough volume VV for all constrained models.Comment: 39 pages, teX file, 4 Postscript figures, 1 TeX figur

    A combinatorial proof of tree decay of semi-invariants

    We consider finite range Gibbs fields and provide a purely combinatorial proof of the exponential tree decay of semi--invariants, supposing that the logarithm of the partition function can be expressed as a sum of suitable local functions of the boundary conditions. This hypothesis holds for completely analytical Gibbs fields; in this context the tree decay of semi--invariants has been proven via analyticity arguments. However the combinatorial proof given here can be applied also to the more complicated case of disordered systems in the so called Griffiths' phase when analyticity arguments fail

    Renormalization Group in the uniqueness region: weak Gibbsianity and convergence

    We analyze the block averaging transformation applied to lattice gas models with short range interaction in the uniqueness region below the critical temperature. We prove weak Gibbsianity of the renormalized measure and convergence of the renormalized potential in a weak sense. Since we are arbitrarily close to the coexistence region we have a diverging characteristic length of the system: the correlation length or the critical length for metastability, or both. Thus, to perturbatively treat the problem we have to use a scale-adapted expansion. Moreover, such a model below the critical temperature resembles a disordered system in presence of Griffiths' singularity. Then the cluster expansion that we use must be graded with its minimal scale length diverging when the coexistence line is approached

    Sum of exit times in series of metastable states in probabilistic cellular automata

    Reversible Probabilistic Cellular Automata are a special class of automata whose stationary behavior is described by Gibbs--like measures. For those models the dynamics can be trapped for a very long time in states which are very different from the ones typical of stationarity. This phenomenon can be recasted in the framework of metastability theory which is typical of Statistical Mechanics. In this paper we consider a model presenting two not degenerate in energy metastable states which form a series, in the sense that, when the dynamics is started at one of them, before reaching stationarity, the system must necessarily visit the second one. We discuss a rule for combining the exit times from each of the metastable states

    Vibrations on pulse tube based Dry Dilution Refrigerators for low noise measurements

    Dry Dilution Refrigerators (DDR) based on pulse tube cryo-coolers have started to replace Wet Dilution Refrigerators (WDR) due to the ease and low cost of operation. However these advantages come at the cost of increased vibrations, induced by the pulse tube. In this work, we present the vibration measurements performed on three different commercial DDRs. We describe in detail the vibration measurement system we assembled, based on commercial accelerometers, conditioner and DAQ, and examined the effects of the various damping solutions utilized on three different DDRs, both in the low and high frequency regions. Finally, we ran low temperature, pseudo-massive (30 and 250 g) germanium bolometers in the best vibration-performing system under study and report on the results

    Linking annuity benefits to the longevity experience: Alternative solutions

    The uncertainty regarding financial returns and the life expectancy, joint to the reduced social security benefits, increasingly expose individuals to the risk of outliving their post-retirement assets. However, the demand for longevity guarantees remains low, due to high costs. The providers, on their side, may be reluctant to offer non-adjustable longevity guarantees, as the risk is long term and difficult to predict. It is therefore convenient to reconsider the design of longevity guarantees. In particular, a participating structure, providing a link to some longevity experience, could allow a sharing of losses, and possibly profits, resulting in a reduction of the cost of the retained guarantee. The literature review suggests a number of alternatives to define a longevity-linking arrangement, but the topic is not yet completely explored. It is useful, in particular, to have a common framework, under which the various solutions can be interpreted and compared, also with a view to the trade-off between the retained risk and the cost of the guarantee. Developing a general structure describing longevity-linked post-retirement benefits is the main purpose of this paper. Allowing for aggregate longevity risk, we then examine suitable solutions for insurance products
