Managers looking for meaning
The environment for companies and organizations is marked by profound changes. Indeed, the latter must now face several challenges: on the one hand, the need for reactivity and agility in the face of global and changing markets coupled with a globalization of competition as well as the growing influence of customers who are increasingly informed and involved in their consumption, the increasing complexity of legal frameworks and, on the other hand, a strong development of information, digitization and communication technologies that promote exchanges both inside and outside the company or organization. In this changing environment, managers must be more than ever meaningful to their teams in order to respond to the development of increasingly complex products and services, the expectations of increasingly demanding customers, the instability of their market environment, or the need for real-time learning. In this context, the question of management as a vector of meaning is now becoming a major issue for both companies and research in management sciences. Our research focuses on the transformations of managers' work, on the drivers and obstacles to their involvement in their roles, in their teams, in their careers as well as within their company or organization and more precisely on their sensemaking activities within modern organizations marked in particular by an increasingly constrained and situated definition of their action but also by an injunction for more innovation, creativity and risk-taking within companies and organizations paradoxically increasingly subject to the weight of legislation, financialisation, procedures and process dictates. Our approach consists in showing how the posture of managers as well as the meaning of managerial work are key factors for the motivation of teams and the development of companies and organizations in this economic context of the 21st century globalized, moving, in full effervescence, source of innovation and questioning established schemes but also destruction of meaning to action at work.
