Computer simulation of liquid-crystal surface modification

    Get PDF
Metropolis Monte Carlo simulations are used to study the interplay between two different anchoring effects of spherocylinders on a modified surface consisting of hard walls onto which liquid-crystal molecules have been perpendicularly grafted. By varying both the length and grafting density of the surface molecules, a number of different and novel anchoring regimes are observed including: planar, homeotropic, tilted and decoupled planar

Diurnal and nocturnal temperatures for Atlantic salmon postsmolts (Salmo salar L.) during their early marine life

    Get PDF
Data storage tags (DSTs) were applied to Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar L.) smolts during their seaward migration in the spring of 2002 at a fish counting fence on Campbellton River, Newfoundland. Our objectives were to discover whether or not salmon smolts could carry DSTs and survive, whether or not useful data on thermal habitat could be obtained and interpreted, and whether or not salmon smolts moved vertically in the water column. Data were downloaded from 15 of the recovered tags and revealed the hourly water temperatures experienced by the fish for periods of 3 to 71 days. The data on the DSTs were analyzed for temperature patterns in relation to migration behavior and diurnal movement of the fish. While in the sea, the DSTs recorded night temperatures of 12.5°C, which were higher than day temperatures of 11.6°C; the record from moored recorders, however, indicated that sea temperatures actually declined at night. It is hypothesized that posts-molts avoid avian predators during daylight hours by positioning themselves deeper in the water column and that they were pursuing prey during the deeper vertical descents or ascents noted during the periods of more rapid changes in temperature

Representing Recovery: A discourse analysis of the television shows You, AJ and the Queen, and Mom

This thesis analyses representations of mothers seeking recovery from drug use in the first season of three serial shows available on Netflix: Mom, AJ and the Queen, and You. Prior to the main analysis of these shows, a literature review was conducted resulting in the opportunity to address a lacuna in the literature related to gender-focused studies looking at recovery from addiction. The shows that were chosen all include at least one character who is a mother and begins the process of recovery. These shows possess striking similarities in their portrayals of an abstinence-based approach to addiction recovery as well as intersecting discourses of addicted women as bad mothers who reproduce deviance through their children. A discursive analysis of Mom, AJ and the Queen, and You seeks to understand which discourses of addiction, drug use, gender, motherhood, and deviance are present in these representations and the messages that are communicated to the viewing public. This thesis illustrates that these representations reproduce dominant, gendered discourses which construct drug using women as deviant women and “bad mothers” who produce “bad children”. These representations further reinforce the dominant abstinence-based recovery discourse that creates a dichotomous understanding of addiction and recovery as active use as the problem and total abstinence as the only solution. Despite the presence of some resistance to these discourses, these shows ultimately reproduce stereotypical, and often harmful, gendered discourses of addiction and recovery

THE LEARNER'S INTUITION: HARNESSING THE POWER OF INTUITIONS DURING CREATIVE AND COLLABORATIVE ACTIVITIES

    Get PDF
Thesis (Ph.D.) - Indiana University, School of Education, 2015Intuitions have received little attention in learning and education largely due to the difficulty in defining what intuitions are and their potential benefit (or detriment) to learning. The research on intuitions has been encouraging, yet the methods employed to study these intuitions often involve learners--some with considerable background and/or prior domain knowledge--expressing their thinking, a priori, about some phenomena they have encountered. If, however, intuitions help individuals make sense of unfamiliar and new phenomena encountered in the world, then steps should be taken to encourage learners to use their intuitions as they encounter these phenomena. The findings in this dissertation suggest that even over small amounts of time, young children can think and produce materials that are beyond what was initially thought to be developmentally appropriate. Further still, engaging young learners in a discourse that values intuitions is important and activities grounded in practices that encourage children to be actively involved in making a tangible artifact helps in the construction of knowledge. Furthermore, curricular designs grounded in a constructionist theory of learning and teaching and mediated by technology may be advantageous for music educators because they encourage students to engage in what musicians do (e.g., create music)

School mathematics leaders' perceptions of successes and challenges of their leadership role within a Mathematics Improvement Project

    Get PDF
The mathematics curriculum leader plays an important role in leading the mathematics curriculum in primary schools. They experience successes and face challenges associated with this leadership role. The perceptions that 25 mathematics leaders held about the successes and challenges they experienced whilst participating in a school mathematics project are reported. Main successes included improved mathematics planning practices using key ideas, transformed cultures concerning mathematics education, and greater use of quality tasks. The main challenge related to sustaining improvements and maintaining the profile of mathematics in school improvement agendas after involvement in the project

The design of control systems for automated transport

    Get PDF
In this thesis, the design of control systems for automated transport is approached from a systems point of view. The first section discusses general aspects of control system design, namely, system structure, design for reliability and communication requirements. The treatment of the subject is novel and in particular, Chapter 2 - 'The Design of 'Fail-Soft' Systems', is completely original. The second section of the thesis discusses in detail, the longitudinal control of vehicles, emergency control and junction control. In all a novel viewpoint is adopted. There are two broad categories of transport control, synchronous and asynchronous. The former has been the subject of considerable research, the latter has been completely ignored. This thesis concentrates on asynchronous control. Contrary to the views stated by many researchers, it is shown that asynchronous control can achieve a very much better performance than synchronous controllers. In addition, a completely new form of asynchronous control has been devised, and is presented in this thesis. This scheme, the asynchronous marker-follower control, combines the advantages of synchronous controllers (simple processing and low communication requirements) with the advantages of asynchronous controllers (an efficient use of track and a good response to failures). In the last section of the thesis, the computer simulation models, used to examine the control schemes, are described. The interactions between automated vehicles are particularly complex, consequently clear presentation is important. To this end a number of graph plotting routines were written and a moving picture display technique developed. Each Chapter is supported by a bibliography of references particularly relevant to the chapter. In addition a comprehensive bibliography is contained in the Appendices

Linking practice and theory : A case study of mathematical discourse between a mathematics teacher educator and a primary classroom teacher

    Get PDF
In recent years there has been growing concern as to how to bridge the gap between the theory pre-service teachers engage with as part of their learning in their tertiary classrooms and the profession. To enable pre-service teachers to make stronger connections with the profession, a mathematics teacher educator worked collaboratively with a practicing teacher by co-teaching two cohorts of pre-service teachers studying primary mathematics education. As well as providing benefits to the pre-service teachers, the project allowed the mathematics teacher educator to reflect upon her own practice and the impact of the co-teaching experiences and learning. In this paper we present two snapshots of this experience and a framework that was used to identify how the co-teachers helped the pre-service teachers to make connections between theory and practice, when engaged in mathematical discourse
