    1. State of the art: Si-CCD detector arrays are used in remote sensing. The development of CCD-arrays results in an improvement of the radiometric and geometric density of detector elements. The high performance detector produces a high amount of data to be processed in following image processing steps. To meet the output of the sensor and the capacity of transmission channels, a high performance data compression must be performed. In the last few years very effective compression techniques have been developed. These algorithms are suitable to space-applications as shown in report 50 KU 9405 which has been processed by LuRaTech. An On-Board version of these effective algorithms is not available at the present. 2. Objective of the research: The research aims in an implementational concept of a digital processor in an high-throughput-digitial-front-end-electronic. This digital processor consists of a pixel correction module and a data compression module. The data compression module implements the state-of-the-art algorithms in data compression, while the pixel correction module corrects the non-uniformity of the various sensor elements. The implementational concept is directly used to create a demonstrator of that digital preprocessor. It demonstrates the full algorithmic performance of the digital processor but does not meet the requirements of space qualified mass and energy budgets and the radiation resistance. 3. Method: A collection of modem image compression algorithms has been checked for hardware implementation. The most optimal algorithms were first implemented in software. Simulation demonstrates the performance of these algorithms. The simulation is the basis for the hardware implementation concept. 4. Result: During the project the following results are reached: - Simulation tools of effective image compression algorithms - Selection of hardware implementable algorithms - optimized simulation of the algorithms, decompression tools - detailed concept for hardware implementation. 5. Conclusions/Applications: The concept implements a state-of-the art algorithms which performs very good results in image compression. Because of its wide range of contolable compression parameters (lossless and lossy) and its high throughput (10 MSamples / sec, 16 Bit) it is best suited for an on-board compression. Commercial fields of application are the real-time video processing.
