A Social History of Media, Technology and Schooling
This article explores the literature in the intersecting fields of media, technology and schooling in the United States across the past two centuries. It organizes the research from a social-historical perspective through a fictionalized interview with an archetypal third-generation urban public school teacher. This topography illustrates the problems and possibilities that emerge from the chronic push for technology in schools. Of particular mention are the privileging of orality and literacy through the common school reader, the mechanization of schooling through teaching machines and television, and the transformative yet still untapped potential of computers and the internet
Lumberjacks and Lifestyles: An Archaeological Approach to the Workers of a ca. 1900 Logging Camp
The thesis research presented herein details an excavation of the Wanaki Logging Camp (Site Number 09-03-103) performed during the summer of 2020. The camp is a ca 1900 logging camp located off the west shore of Cass Lake, Minnesota, within the Chippewa National Forest boundary. Berms and ditches within the site outline seven structural ruins and a former road. The two largest outlines resemble a dingle-style camp which is named for the dingle structure, a single roof spanning the gap between the bunkhouse and chow hall. The goal of this research is to obtain a better understanding of the loggers by finding ways in which they were able to shape camp life, in other words, demonstrate agency. The excavation followed a 2018 youth archaeology workshop in which the Chippewa National Forest led youth volunteers through shovel testing and metal detecting of select structural remains. Artifacts from the 2018 workshop were incorporated into the final analysis. The current excavation applied a series of methods, including a metal detector survey, shovel testing, and test units. Findings were then processed through fine screening, floatation, faunal analysis, seed identification, and statistical analysis. The results of this project include the identification of four of the seven structures, common foodstuffs, and several non-work activities, all of which provide a baseline to understand life in the logging camp and how the loggers may have influenced life within the camp
Creating a Demolition Estimate Lab Assignment
This senior project aims to create a Demolition Estimate Lab as part of Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo\u27s Demolition Topics Course, with the goal of enhancing construction education through practical experience in estimating demolition costs. The Lab will be equipped with industry-standard tools and software to simulate diverse demolition scenarios, covering site preparation, equipment requirements, waste disposal, labor needs, and environmental considerations. The project methodology entails extensive research and the integration of interactive learning activities. This initiative is expected to yield several benefits for students. Firstly, it will lead to improved learning outcomes by providing hands-on experience in estimating demolition costs, which is a critical aspect of the construction industry. Additionally, it will ensure a more relevant curriculum by aligning educational content with practical industry needs. By gaining proficiency in estimating demolition costs, students will enhance their competitiveness in the job market, as this skill is highly sought after by employers. The successful establishment of the Demolition Estimate Lab will contribute to the development of well-rounded and industry-ready professionals. It will also serve as a catalyst for innovative educational practices in the field of construction, reinforcing Cal Poly\u27s commitment to providing cutting-edge and practical education
A wideband noise-canceling CMOS LNA exploiting a transformer
A broadband LNA incorporating single-ended to differential conversion, has been successfully implemented using a noise-canceling technique and a single on-chip transformer. The LNA achieves a high voltage gain of 19dB, a wideband input match (2.5-4.0 GHz), and a noise figure of 4-5.4 dB, while consuming only 8mW. The LNA is implemented in a 90nm CMOS process with 6 metal layers
Designing a robotic work cell for chair assembly
This report is intended to describe the work on setting up a robotic work cell for assembling
the Stefan chair from IKEA, an initiative designed to boost manufacturing efficiency while
maintaining high quality and safety. For geometry modelling, the project utilized SolidWorks,
and for simulating and optimizing the assembly process, it used RoboDK. The primary
observations are that the technologies investigated would be useful in creating the highest-
performing robotic system that complies with safety and sustainment requirements. The
project culminated in successfully assembling the robotic system, demonstrating the
feasibility of robot-assisted manufacturing of furniture, and pinpointing where more significant
optimization could still be made.Outgoin
