International audienceMajor innovations for Senegal's food sovereignty Development of seaweed farming and the use of macro-algae Major progress has been made in the use of macro-algae. A taxonomic and genetic inventory, studies on the nutritional quality of several species and a socio-anthropological study have all been carried out. Finally, culture tests are underway, including sporulation tests. Seaweed farming appears to be a major innovation for Senegal. Support for fish farming through research and training Acclimatisation of a freshwater tilapia species, the Sarotherodon melanotheron heudolotti, is crucial to the development of fish farming in Senegal, as it opens the way to wider-scale farming of this species. Development of new feed formulas for fish farming. This activity aims to improve the composition of feed to optimise the growth and health of fish reared in aquaculture. Training young people and women in the techniques of fish farming and aquaponics, combining fish farming and market gardening.

The unusual massive beaching of Sargassum around Dakar Peninsula (Senegal, Africa) in autumn 2022: opportunity or threat
International audienceHuge strandings of holopelagic Sargassum along the Senegalese coast were observed throughout thesummer of 2022. The unusual nature of such stranding has mobilized the community, sparking questionsfrom civic society and industrialists. We report on this Sargassum arrival to participate in a globalscientific endeavour and to inform local stakeholders. Volunteers reported stranding from north to southof Senegal, harming the coastal life, including turtle fatalities. We analyzed the stranded biomass fortaxonomic identity and heavy metal concentrations (As, Cd, Pb and Hg). We differentiated theSargassum collected into six morphotypes based on morphological details. We noticed the presence ofthe species S. natans I, S. fluitans III and S. natans VIII. Chemical nuclear magnetic resonance (HRMASNMR) fingerprintings were obtained to compare morphotypes and sampling sites. In comparisonto previous studies throughout the tropical Atlantic Ocean, preliminary analyses revealed low quantitiesof arsenic and high concentrations of cadmium and mercury in the thalli. For all these heavy metalsexcept lead, the concentrations are higher in S. natans I. Arsenic concentrations were variable betweensampling sites but lead and mercury concentrations were spatially homogeneous. For agriculturalpurposes, the maximum values for As and Cd were above some recommended limits. For animal feed, all As concentrations were below the permissible level (40 ppm EU, European Union). Additionalanalyses are underway to validate these first results and study the biochemical composition of thesamples
