New variational principle for transport theory

    No full text
A general variational principle of Kahan, Rideau, and Roussopoulos is shown to be applicable to problems of transport theory and in particular to the solution of the Milne problem. The variational principle yields directly the flux at every point, not only at infinity, unlike the classical methods for asymptotic densities. © 1958 The American Physical Society.SCOPUS: ar.jinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishe

    Model uncertainty and model inaccuracy

    No full text
The problem of model uncertainty versus model inaccuracy is examined in the light of the concept of the 'probability of correctness of a model under a given context' introduced by Apostolakis. To avoid possible difficulties linked with this concept, a distinction is introduced between 'predictive' models and 'constitutive' models, the former being generic in the sense that they can host the latter as submodels. A metric or distance between linear models as well as an objective of the model are introduced, from which we can give an operational definition of 'model uncertainty' (with respect to distribution of parameters of the associated constitutive models) and of 'model accuracy' with respect to a reference model. Finally the choice of a predictive model is linked to a loss function and a cost of using or defining a model. © 1998 Elsevier Science Limited.SCOPUS: ar.jinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishe

    Quasistatic solutions of reactor kinetics

    No full text
Quasistatic solutions, i.e. solutions factorized into an amplitude function T and a shape function ψ are found by solving a nonlinear system formed by the original kinetics equations and a normalization condition 〈ø, ψ〉 = 1. A Newton method coupled to the technique of generalized inverses yields an iterative procedure to define various quasistatic algorithms. © 1980.SCOPUS: ar.jinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishe

    The reproducing kernel method. II

    No full text
The explicit solution of the Cauchy problem ∂N/∂t = HN by means of reproducing kernels is obtained under various forms: conformal mapping expansions, Sheffer polynomial expansion, polynomials orthogonal on a family of curves; the convergence is studied for both Szegö and Bergman kernels.SCOPUS: ar.jinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishe
