Singularities of plane complex curves and limits of K\"ahler metrics with cone singularities. I: Tangent Cones
We construct and classify, in the case of two complex dimensions, the
possible tangent cones at points of limit spaces of non-collapsed sequences of
K\"ahler-Einstein metrics with cone singularities.Comment: Reference to Panov's Polyhedral Kahler Manifolds adde
Hamburg's warehouse district in Martin tom Dieck's "hundert Ansichten der Speicherstadt"
Most texts that deal with Martin tom Dieck’s black-and-white comic "hundert Ansichten der Speicherstadt" (Zürich: Arrache Cœur, 1997, French title: Vortex) claim that it depicts the eponymous warehouse district (Speicherstadt) in Hamburg. As this paper shows, this claim is inaccurate: although the architecture in tom Dieck’s drawings clearly refers to buildings in the warehouse district, the differences in the details are so obvious, that to speak of a straightforward depiction of the Speicherstadt is oversimplifying. After a brief comparison with Christoph Schäfer’s picture book "Die Stadt ist unsere Fabrik" (Leipzig: Spector Books, 2010), the paper concludes with a discussion of the depiction of urban environments in general and in tom Dieck's book in particular
Asymptotically conical Ricci-flat Kahler metrics with cone singularities
The main result proved in this thesis is an existence theorem for asymptotically conical Ricci-flat Kahler metrics on C2 with cone singularities along a smooth complex curve. These metrics are expected
to arise as blow-up limits of non-collapsed sequences of Kahler-Einstein metrics with cone singularities.Open Acces
External Evaluation of the NCA WASH Programme in Darfur: With Special Focus on IDP Camps in Zalingei
This paper aims to evaluate the impact and appropriateness of Norwegian Church Aid's WASH program in internally displaced persons (IDP) camps of South and West Darfur, and to provide recommendations for operating the program with a reduced budget in the future. The program targets mainly IDP populations and nearby host communities, supplying water through motorized systems, open hand dug wells and hand pumps. Construction and rehabilitation of latrines along with promotion of personal hygiene practices comprise the sanitation component. The expulsion of many NGOs from Sudan in 2009 caused added difficulty for the program, thus the evaluation considers the role of challenging political conditions like this in planning for continuity and responsibility

The two-boundary Temperley-Lieb algebra
We study a two-boundary extension of the Temperley-Lieb algebra which has
recently arisen in statistical mechanics. This algebra lies in a quotient of
the affine Hecke algebra of type C and has a natural diagrammatic
representation. The algebra has three parameters and, for generic values of
these, we determine its representation theory.
We use the action of the centre of the affine Hecke algebra to show that all
irreducible representations lie within a finite dimensional diagrammatic
quotient. These representations are fully characterised by an additional
parameter related to the action of the centre. For generic values of this
parameter there is a unique representation of dimension 2^N and we show that it
is isomorphic to a tensor space representation. We construct a basis in which
the Gram matrix is diagonal and use this to discuss the irreducibility of this
representation.Comment: 45 pages Latex, 21 eps figures, revised versio
Variational integrators and time-dependent lagrangian systems
This paper presents a method to construct variational integrators for
time-dependent lagrangian systems. The resulting algorithms are symplectic,
preserve the momentum map associated with a Lie group of symmetries and also
describe the energy variation.Comment: 8 page
