    The Girl Scout Wall (GS Wall) project was implemented in two classes at the University of Dayton (UD): a Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering (MAE) course, and a Health and Sports Science (HSS) course, and Sport Facility Management. The MAE course, Introduction to Materials, is a three-credit, third-year required course where students learn about the basic structure and properties of materials as well as the principles of material selection. The Sport Facility Management course is a three-semester hour, required HSS course where students are introduced to the processes of planning, constructing, equipping, maintaining, and managing sport facilities

    Student Employee Recruitment and Retention Through Campus Partnerships

    Recruitment and retention of student employees are important considerations for any recreational sports department, large or small, because student employees impact both the quantity and quality of programs and services. This article proposes a strategy for establishing partnerships with academic departments to aid in the recruitment and retention of student employees. These partnerships benefit students, the recreational sports department, academic departments, and university student retention efforts. Following a description of this strategy is an example of a partnership that has been successfully established at one Midwestern university

    A Qualitative Inquiry of Social and Emotional Support for Students with Persistent Concussion Symptoms

    Students who sustain concussions often struggle with social and emotional symptoms. Such symptoms can interfere with students’ academic performance, relationships, and overall sense of well-being. This qualitative study involved interviews with eight adolescents and young adults who sustained concussions as youths and experienced significant social and emotional symptoms; six of the participants’ parents were also interviewed. Grounded theory methodology was used to code the data, construct categories and identify themes, and develop a theoretical model of students’ post-concussion social and emotional issues and potential sources of support. Categories of issues emerging from the interviews included anxiety/stress, depression/sadness, interpersonal difficulties/isolation, and irritability/moodiness. An exploration of barriers and facilitators of recovery revealed themes related to: factors at school, factors at home, medical care, and level of involvement with sports and athletic personnel. The theoretical model highlights important areas for development in school-based consultation to ameliorate students’ post-concussion social and emotional symptoms

    The Influence of Title IX on Personal and Professional Biographies of Early Career Female Club Volleyball Coaches

    Seeking to understand the relationship between Title IX and its impact on a select group of its contemporary beneficiaries, the purpose of this study was to determine the influence of Title IX on the personal and professional biographies of 8 early career female club volleyball coaches. This study utilized a modified case study design featuring constant comparison data analysis. Data were collected using a qualitative interview technique with each of the candidate’s interviews subdivided into four distinct sections. Part I of the interview established a basic personal and professional biography of each individual coach. Part II provided data on the subject’s athletic experiences. Part III addressed the life goals of the coaches. Part IV explored each individual participant’s knowledge of Title IX. Findings revealed the existence of major themes common across all 8 coaches including (a) the shared belief that athletics provided opportunities for them to develop valuable lifelong personal and professional skills, (b) that opportunities for the acquisition of such skills were their implicit right (i.e., not directly attributable to Title IX, about which they knew little), and (c) the existence of an enduring commitment to the sport of volleyball as a source of personal identity and fulfillment. Once educated fully about Title IX, however, the coaches were unanimous in their belief that although progress in women’s athletics -- related to the impact of Title IX -- had permitted them to succeed, inequity vis-à-vis opportunities accorded their male counterparts still existed. Correspondingly, the findings of this study suggest a post-gender society has not yet been attained and that efforts to ensure equal opportunity must continue

    Comparison of the Effect of Caffeine Ingestion on Time to Exhaustion between Endurance Trained and Untrained Men

    This study compared the ergogenic effects of caffeine on men who were endurance trained to those who were untrained. The study was a double-blind, placebo-controlled crossover experimental design. Ten endurance trained men (mean age 24.4 ± 2.0 yrs, weight 79.4 ± 8.5 kg, predicted VO2 max 46.3 ± 1.8 mL·kg-1·min-1) and 10 untrained men (mean age 22.8 ± 1.9 yrs, weight 88.9 ± 9.9 kg, predicted VO2 max 37.6 ± 2.7 mL·kg-1·min-1) completed two cycle ergometer trials to exhaustion at 80% of their predicted workload max 30 min after ingesting either 5 mg·kg-1 of body weight of caffeine or a placebo. Neither group displayed significant increases in time to exhaustion (Trained Group: 786.4 ± 251.5 sec for the placebo trial and 810.7 ± 209.4 sec for the caffeine trial and the Untrained Group: 514.6 ± 107.8 sec for the placebo trial and 567.3 ± 140.5 sec for the caffeine trial) after ingesting caffeine. When compared statistically between groups, the difference was not significant. When the groups were combined, the difference was caffeine and the placebo was not significant. The findings indicate that there was no ergogenic effect of caffeine on time to exhaustion in either endurance trained or untrained men

    Once thought to be primarily an issue of concern for university fraternities and sororities, hazing has emerged as a disturbing trend with an increase in the number of incidents involving high school student athletes. High school coaches, athletic administrators, and teachers must understand that initiation rites of sport teams can sometimes spiral out of control with grave legal and financial consequences for student athletes and school officials. The purposes of this article are to: Define hazing and review the history of anti-hazing legislation in the United States of America. Describe hazing laws in the State of Ohio. Review current research related to hazing specifically at the high school level. Discuss proactive strategies coaches, administrators, students, teachers, parents, and the community can use to prevent the harmful practices of hazing

    Fitness, Friendship, and Fun: University Sponsored Community PE Program
