Dilaton-Axion hair for slowly rotating Kerr black holes
Campbell et al. demonstrated the existence of axion ``hair'' for Kerr black
holes due to the non-trivial Lorentz Chern-Simons term and calculated it
explicitly for the case of slow rotation. Here we consider the dilaton coupling
to the axion field strength, consistent with low energy string theory and
calculate the dilaton ``hair'' arising from this specific axion source.Comment: 13 pages + 1 fi
Determination of electromagnetic medium from the Fresnel surface
We study Maxwell's equations on a 4-manifold where the electromagnetic medium
is described by an antisymmetric -tensor . In this setting,
the Tamm-Rubilar tensor density determines a polynomial surface of fourth order
in each cotangent space. This surface is called the Fresnel surface and acts as
a generalisation of the light-cone determined by a Lorentz metric; the Fresnel
surface parameterises electromagnetic wave-speed as a function of direction.
Favaro and Bergamin have recently proven that if has only a principal
part and if the Fresnel surface of coincides with the light cone for a
Lorentz metric , then is proportional to the Hodge star operator of
. That is, under additional assumptions, the Fresnel surface of
determines the conformal class of . The purpose of this paper is
twofold. First, we provide a new proof of this result using Gr\"obner bases.
Second, we describe a number of cases where the Fresnel surface does not
determine the conformal class of the original -tensor . For
example, if is invertible we show that and have

Variation of Loess Thickness and Clay Content in Southern Iowa
This report summarizes two aspects of the Wisconsin loess in southern Iowa and presents some information on the sandy-silt immediately underlying the loess and overlying the till in southcentral Iowa. The data has originated from project work done over the last five year on the loess and glacial till of Iowa (Project 283-S) in .an attempt to solve the problem of stabilization of loess and till for roads. This paper incorporates data procured to date on the loess of southwest, southern and east-central Iowa and present studies in progress in south-central Iowa. (See references 1, 2, 3 and 4.
Evolutionary Approaches to Optimization Problems in Chimera Topologies
Chimera graphs define the topology of one of the first commercially available
quantum computers. A variety of optimization problems have been mapped to this
topology to evaluate the behavior of quantum enhanced optimization heuristics
in relation to other optimizers, being able to efficiently solve problems
classically to use them as benchmarks for quantum machines. In this paper we
investigate for the first time the use of Evolutionary Algorithms (EAs) on
Ising spin glass instances defined on the Chimera topology. Three genetic
algorithms (GAs) and three estimation of distribution algorithms (EDAs) are
evaluated over hard instances of the Ising spin glass constructed from
Sidon sets. We focus on determining whether the information about the topology
of the graph can be used to improve the results of EAs and on identifying the
characteristics of the Ising instances that influence the success rate of GAs

Reconstructing the phytoplankton community of the Cariaco Basin during the Younger Dryas cold event using chlorin steryl esters

The definitive version was published in Paleoceanography 19 (2004): PA01006, doi:10.1029/2003PA000907.A record of the downcore distribution of chlorin steryl esters (CSEs) through the Younger Dryas was produced from Cariaco Basin sediments in order to assess the potential use of CSEs as recorders of the structure of phytoplankton communities through time. Using an improved high-performance liquid chromatography method for the separation of CSEs, we find significant changes in the distribution of CSEs during the Younger Dryas in the Cariaco Basin. During the Younger Dryas, enhanced upwelling in the Cariaco Basin caused an increase in the diatom population and therefore an increase in the relative abundance of CSEs derived from diatoms. In contrast, the dinoflagellate population, and therefore CSEs derived from dinoflagellates, decreased in response to the climate change during the Younger Dryas. These community shifts agree well with the shifts observed in the present day on a seasonal basis that result from the north-south migration of the Intertropical Convergence Zone over the Cariaco Basin. We also identify changes in the abundance of several CSEs that seem to reflect rapid warming and cooling events. This study suggests that CSEs are useful proxies for reconstructing phytoplankton communities and paleoenvironments.This work was supported by the Chemical

Further Studies of Loess in Iowa: Thickness, Clay Content, and Engineering Classification
This paper is a continuation of the work previously reported by Dahl, Handy and Davidson (1), and summarizes currently available information on properties of the Wisconsin loess. New areas of investigation are in northwest and eastern Iowa. Depth measurements and samples in the bluffs region were obtained mostly from the traverses of Hutton (2) and Davidson, et al. (3). Riggs (4) continued these traverses and the northwest-southeast traverses of Lyon, et al. (5), and established a grid-like sample pattern in southwest Iowa. Dahl (6) and Hansen (7) extended the grid eastward to the Mississippi River. Data on northwest Iowa was obtained from the east-west traverses initiated by Davidson (8)
