    No full text
The described activities to establish an ISIS-prorotype at NPO 'Planeta' in Russia and to integrate it into the network of information systems of remote sensing. An interface between Russian catalogue system EKKI and German User Interface ISIS was designed, implemented and tested. Catalogue datasets and browse images of sensors MSU-SK and MS-E of Russian satellites RESURS were inserted into the ISIS-Installation at NPO 'Planeta' and were also inserted into the German User Interface ISIS. A regularly update of both catalogues where agreed and it gives the remote sensing user community the possibility to access to actual catalogue and browse entries of Russian remote sensing data-sets via ISIS system at DLR. A simulator is built up to support and to optimize the development of a future satellite navigation system. A can Model all important element of the system. With this tool the interaction between the navigation components can be checked and important parameters can be interpret. The reaction of the hole system or of some components can be evaluated for definied error sources. Mathematical models for the system elements have to be developed and integrated in the software code of the complex simulation tool. The transmission channel of the signals is also a system element. The 16"t"h Users' Seminar of DLR's German Remote Sensing Data Center (DFD) from 20"t"h to 21"t"h October 1999 was held at Oberpfaffenhofen. The presentations covered a broad range of different remote sensing areas at atmosphere, landscape structures and environment. At the beginning reorganisation aspects of the earth observation activities within DLR, the German National Space Program, the ESA-Living Planet Programme and European Earth Observation Activities have been presented. After this introduction part emphasis was given on the status and the development of the earth observation missions SRTM and Landsat 7. This section was followed by presentations of hyperspectral data interpretation, atmospheric correction, environmental application, and image analysis of landscape structures. Untersuchung des Informationsgehalts und der Eignung experimenteller und operationeller SAR-Sensoren zur Erfassung tropischer Primaer- und Sekundaerwaelder, periodischer Ueberschwemungen und zur Ueberwachung der Rodungsdynamik Eine Untersuchung mit Daten der SIR-C/X-SAR-Missionen I und II, ERS-1-Daten, Landsat-TM-Daten und Gelaendekartierungen im Bundesstaat Rondonia, Brasilien

The potential of operational and experimental SAR sensors to map and monitor tropical rainforests is evaluated for the Brazilian state of Rondonia. The SAR sensor independence of weather conditions and daytime offers the possibility to gain information on structure and physiognomy of vegetation even in remote areas with an all-year could over. The capability of SIR-C/X-SAR data of the missions I and II to map different states of forest degradation, landuse, and sub-canopy floodings is tested. For this objective, pixel- and texture-based classifiers have been applied. The highest information content towards mapping primary and secondary forest sites has been found in L-band data. C-band and X-band have shown to carry information on landuse. The different polarisations of SIR-C, as well as corresponding ratios and indices have been tested for their potential to map and quantify biomass of primary and secondary forest sites. L-HV proved to be best suited for mapping biomass. L-HH seemed best for maping and detecting sub-canopy floodings. Data of ERS-1 have been tested regarding their capability to perform clearcut detection and forest monitoring. Multitemporal and multisensoral combinations have shown to offer a promising potential to perform these tasks. The cloud analysis tool APOLLO Improvements and validations

    No full text
During its more than twelve years of existence, the 'AVHRR processing scheme over clouds, land and ocean' (APOLLO) has been modified and extended. The intention of this paper is to document the present state of APOLLO and to summarize the experiences gained. The scope of the processing scheme is reviewed and the actual state of the day time and night time algorithms are presented. The reason for the modifications are discussed. Validations of the modifications include comparisons with surface observations, with data from the 'international satellite cloud climatology project' (ISCCP) and with model simulations of the cloud liquid water path. APOLLO is now a robust and versatile cloud analysis tool. It is presently used to establish a cloud climatology in central Europe, based on processing of 15 years of daily AVHRR data. Bestimmung von Wolken- und Aerosoleigenschaften aus bidirektionalen, spektralen und Polarisations-Charakteristika von Strahlungsmessungen mit POLDER und OCTS Schlussbericht

This report describes the use of bidirectional and spectral measurements of the Stokes vector in the visible spectral range by means of POLDER/ADEOS for deriving physical properties of clouds and aerosols. Taking the polarization information into account, the cloud optical depth and the mode radius are derived from fully cloudy pixels as well as the aerosol optical depth and the aerosol type from cloud free pixels. The central point of the method are neuronal networks trained by data obtained from simulations of the radiative transport allowing for the complete Stokes vector. A complementary algorithm SYNAER uses OCTS data combined with POLDER bidirectional information to derive the aerosol optical thickness and the aerosol type. GOME/ERS2 data are compared with POLDER/ADEOS data to assess the quality of the correction for self polarization in the GOME processing chain. The determination of fully cloudy and cloud free POLDER pixels by means of simultaneous OCTS data will be demonstrated. Radar, Amplitude, Phase und Interferometrie Detection - RAPID Endbericht

RAPID was a joint project of the Deutschen Fernerkundungsdatenzentrum (DFD) and Institut fuer Hochfrequenztechnik from the German Aerospace Center (DLR) and Institut fuer Nachrichtenverarbeitung from the University GH-Siegen as partner. The goal was to develop and approve theories, algorithm and processingssystems to use the interferometric data from ERS. In a preoperational processing chain it is possible to generate coherence - and phase products and as final results digital elevation models (DEM). These products can be used by other projects, therefore other geoscientist must not developed these basics products for there applications. Specially DEMs are very necessary and useful. In various test regions the accuracies were investigated. The DEM from ERS tandem have an height accuracy of about 10 m and a geometric resolution of 30 m x 30 m. The preoperational system developed in RAPID in the basis for the InSAR systems for SRTM in 1999 and ENVISAT in 2000. In RAPID also the SAR processing, the coregistration of SLCs and the phase unwrapping was approved. With the chirp-scaling technique complete ERS are processed and up to ten datasets were coregistered. Special filter operations guarantee sufficient result in area with low coherence (<0.3). The phase unwrapping was approved by a new approach, the 2-dim Kalman filter. This filter was developed, implemented and tested with ERS data.
