First assessment of age and sex structures of elephants by using dung size analysis in a West African savannah
1. An age and sex structure study of the West African savannah elephant (Loxodonta africana africana) population of the Nazinga Game ranch (Burkina Faso) was carried out using direct sightings of individuals near water points, where they group during hot periods of the day, and droppings circumference measurements of dung pile along line transects, during the dry seasons of 2007 and 2008. The age structure, from direct observation data, was estimated by classifying the individuals into 9 age-class-categories based on body size and eruption (length) of tusks.2. The frequency distribution of number of individuals into the age-class-categories showed high similarity with the distribution of circumference measurements of dung-piles that the individuals were seen depositing. Fifty dung-piles measured soon after they were deposited (Class A) and after they dried (to class C) showed a significant difference between the circumference measurements in relation to the time elapsed between the measurements.3. The frequency distribution of dung circumference classes of the observed elephants was similar to that of the dung-piles measured along the transects in 2008. Therefore, dung-piles measurements were used to estimate the Nazinga Game Ranch savanna elephant population’s age and sex structures at the end of dry seasons of 2007 and 2008. We advocated that the Nazinga elephant population consisted mainly of sub-adults.4. The sex ratio was estimated to be in favour of females (1/2). The age-class-specific sex ratio was uneven for calves and young individuals, while being in favour of females with adults. Individuals of less than 1 year represented 6% of the population during the study period
Habitat preferences of Bonelli's Eagles Aquila fasciata in Sicily
Capsule For breeding, areas dominated by extensive agricultural and rugged Mediterranean landscapes
are preferred; maintenance of habitat heterogeneity and extensive agriculture are key for the conservation
of this eagle.
Aims To model breeding habitat preferences of Bonelli’s Eagles Aquila fasciata in Sicily, where the last
viable population still remains in Italy, in order to identify the most important habitats for conservation.
Methods Pairs were monitored between 1990 and 2010. A case-control design through
GLMs was used at
two spatial scales: landscape and home-range. Variables included topographic, climatic, land-use, road
and descriptors of habitat heterogeneity. Information-based criteria were used to select the best subset of
predictors.
Results A total of 22 breeding pairs are still breeding, which represent about the 90% of the Italian population.
The best models at both scales showed that Bonelli’s Eagles were clearly associated with Mediterranean
features, including rugged areas surrounded by extensive arable land, shrubland and herbaceous
vegetation. Our results emphasize the negative effects of habitat fragmentation and agricultural intensification
on the probability of occurrence of Bonelli’s Eagles.
Conclusion The distribution of Bonelli’s Eagles in Sicily can be described by a relatively small number of
topographical and land-use variables. The maintenance of habitat heterogeneity is key for the conservation
of this endangered raptor

Background: Saddle thrombosis is less frequently detected in carotid arteries than in peripheral arterial embolism. The clot and the distal vessel patency have to be promptly recognized in these cases, because if the carotid vessel is open distally, chances may arise for successful emergent surgical procedures to remove the thrombus. At conventional static imaging, mobile floating thrombi may be difficult to differentiate from thrombosis on carotid complicated lesions of atherosclerotic origin. High-resolution ultrasound (US), with its unique capability of real-time imaging, adds fundamental data for interpretation of the findings. Methods: Carotid ultrasound has been performed in acute stroke patients with high-resolution probes. Real-time clips are analyzed and imaging is presented. Results: Saddle carotid bifurcation thrombosis of cardiac origin has been identified in 2 patients with acute homolateral ischemic stroke, with prompt successful surgical removal in one case. Moreover, an example of a thrombus attached on the ruptured surface of a complicated atherosclerotic plaque in an acute symptomatic stroke patient that was successfully operated in emergency is presented. Conclusions: Early high-resolution ultrasound with real-time imaging can easily identify peculiar characteristics of carotid vulnerable diseases in acute stroke phase. Different clinical implications result from the early identification of these different conditions, modifying the therapeutical strategies. © 2012 Elsevier GmbH
Migraine-specific quality of life questionnaire and relapse on medication overuse headache
Background: The management of Medication overuse headache (MOH) represents a difficult challenge for clinicians and headache experts, particularly for the responder rate after a successful withdrawal treatment. The purpose of this study was to investigate the role of demographic and clinical characteristics as well as the score of Migraine-Specific Quality of Life Questionnaire (MSQ), Migraine Disability Questionnaire and Leeds Dependence Questionnaire in predicting a response after a successful withdrawal treatment in patients with MOH.
Methods: This ancillary study is part of a randomized trial that demonstrated the safety and the efficacy of a 3-month treatment with sodium valproate (VPA) (800 mg/day vs placebo) in MOH. Demographic and clinical characteristics and questionnaire results were obtained from the entire sample.
Results: A significant correlation was found only between MOH relapse and the total MSQ score, the Role Preventive sub-scale and the Emotional Function sub-scale, suggesting a poorer quality of life in non responders.
Conclusion: A high MSQ score could be associated with a poor short-term outcome in MOH patients after a successful treatment with detoxification followed by a new treatment
Less Empathic and More Reactive: The Different Impact of Childhood Maltreatment on Facial Mimicry and Vagal Regulation
Facial mimicry and vagal regulation represent two crucial physiological responses to others' facial expressions of emotions. Facial mimicry, defined as the automatic, rapid and congruent electromyographic activation to others' facial expressions, is implicated in empathy, emotional reciprocity and emotions recognition. Vagal regulation, quantified by the computation of Respiratory Sinus Arrhythmia (RSA), exemplifies the autonomic adaptation to contingent social cues. Although it has been demonstrated that childhood maltreatment induces alterations in the processing of the facial expression of emotions, both at an explicit and implicit level, the effects of maltreatment on children's facial mimicry and vagal regulation in response to facial expressions of emotions remain unknown. The purpose of the present study was to fill this gap, involving 24 street-children (maltreated group) and 20 age-matched controls (control group). We recorded their spontaneous facial electromyographic activations of corrugator and zygomaticus muscles and RSA responses during the visualization of the facial expressions of anger, fear, joy and sadness. Results demonstrated a different impact of childhood maltreatment on facial mimicry and vagal regulation. Maltreated children did not show the typical positive-negative modulation of corrugator mimicry. Furthermore, when only negative facial expressions were considered, maltreated children demonstrated lower corrugator mimicry than controls. With respect to vagal regulation, whereas maltreated children manifested the expected and functional inverse correlation between RSA value at rest and RSA response to angry facial expressions, controls did not. These results describe an early and divergent functional adaptation to hostile environment of the two investigated physiological mechanisms. On the one side, maltreatment leads to the suppression of the spontaneous facial mimicry normally concurring to empathic understanding of others' emotions. On the other side, maltreatment forces the precocious development of the functional synchronization between vagal regulation and threatening social cues facilitating the recruitment of fight-or-flight defensive behavioral strategies
