Antibiotic susceptibility of isolates of Bacillus anthracis, a bacterial pathogen with the potential to be used in biowarfare

    Get PDF
Bacillus anthracis is a bacterial species that could be used in a bioterrorist attack. We tested a collection of isolates with a range of relevant antimicrobial compounds. All isolates tested were susceptible to ciprofloxacin and doxycycline. Penicillin and amoxicillin, with or without clavulanate, showed in vitro activity against all B. anthracis isolates. Ceftriaxone demonstrated lower-level in vitro activity compared to penicillin-related compounds against B. anthracis. In vitro data from this study are in keeping with available guidelines

Study of Two-Step Mechanisms in Pion Absorption on 6Li, 12C via Deuteron Emission

The (pi+,pd), and (pi+,dd) reactions were investigated with pions of 100 and 165 MeV kinetic energy on 6Li and 12C targets. In comparison with previously published (pi+,pp) data on the same targets and at the same beam energies, kinematic regions were identified in which the neutron pickup process n+p->d dominated the observed deuteron yield. The importance of this mechanism increases with energy, contributing half of the observed cross section at 165 MeV. The contribution of direct quasi-triton absorption is significant only at 100 MeV.Comment: 23 pages, 12 figure

The twin paradox and Mach's principle

The problem of absolute motion in the context of the twin paradox is discussed. It is shown that the various versions of the clock paradox feature some aspects which Mach might have been appreciated. However, the ultimate cause of the behavior of the clocks must be attributed to the autonomous status of spacetime, thereby proving the relational program advocated by Mach as impracticable.Comment: Latex2e, 11 pages, 6 figures, 33 references, no tables. Gravitational Wave Bursts from Cosmic Superstring Reconnections

We compute the gravitational waveform produced by cosmic superstring reconnections. This is done by first constructing the superstring reconnection trajectory, which closely resembles that of classical, instantaneous reconnection but with the singularities smoothed out due to the string path integral. We then evaluate the graviton vertex operator in this background to obtain the burst amplitude. The result is compared to the detection threshold for current and future gravitational wave detectors, finding that neither bursts nor the stochastic background would be detectable by Advanced LIGO. This disappointing but anticipated conclusion holds even for the most optimistic values of the reconnection probability and loop sizes.Comment: 26 pages, 6 figures; v2: references added and typos correcte

Understanding the role of fathers in children's physical activity: A qualitative study

    Get PDF
Background: Parents are influential in supporting children's physical activity, but relatively little is known about the role of fathers in children's physical activity. Methods: Semi-structured interviews (n = 24) were conducted with low-active and active fathers of children 3-11 years old. Deductive thematic analysis was used to identify fathers' physical activity practices and understand how fathers interact with their children around physical activity. Results: All fathers demonstrated coparticipation in physical activity with their children. Other physical activity practices commonly used by fathers included as follows: facilitation of active opportunities, modeling, involvement through coaching or teaching, and encouragement. In addition, fathers viewed physical activity as an opportunity to spend time with their children to bond and develop shared interests. Finally, fathers perceived their role in children's physical activity to be different compared with mothers. Regarding father activity level, active fathers discussed modeling more frequently and tended to engage in a variety of different activities compared with low-active fathers. Conclusions: Fathers play an important role in their children's physical activity, suggesting that physical activity may be one context in which to prompt paternal involvement, foster father-child relationships, and strengthen paternal parenting

Possible experiment for determination of the role of microscopic vortex rings in the \lambda-transition in He-II

It is suggested that microscopic vortex rings (MVR) play an important role in the \lambda-transition in helium-II and substantially determine the value of T_{\lambda}. For very thin films of He-II, with thickness d less than the size of the smallest MVR, the rings do not fit in and, therefore, do not exist in such films. Consequently, for superfluid films of He-II, a peculiarity in the form of a smoothed-out jump should be observed in the curve T_{m}(d) at the values of thickness approximately equal to the size of the smallest MVR, d= 3 - 9 A (T_{m} is the temperature of the maximum of the broad peak on the curve of the dependence of the specific heat on temperature). The absence of a similar peculiarity will be an evidence that MVR do not influence the values of T_{\lambda} and T_{m}, and do not play any key role in the \lambda-transition. The currently available experimental data are insufficient for revealing the predicted peculiarity.Comment: 6 pages, 2 figure
