Notes on Yang-Mills--Higgs monopoles and dyons on R^D, and Chern-Simons--Higgs solitons on \R^{D-2}: Dimensional reduction of Chern-Pontryagin densities

    Get PDF
We review work on construction of Monopoles in higher dimensions. These are solutions to a particular class of models descending from Yang--Mills systems on even dimensional bulk, with Spheres as codimensions. The topological lower bounds on the Yang-Mills action translate to Bogomol'nyi lower bounds on the residual Yang-Mills-Higgs systems. Mostly, consideration is restricted to 8 dimensional bulk systems, but extension to the arbitrary case follows systematically. After presenting the monopoles, the corresponding dyons are also constructed. Finally, new Chern-Simons densities expressed in terms of Yang-Mills and Higgs fields are presented. These are defined in all dimensions, including in even dimensional spacetimes. They are constructed by subjecting the dimensionally reduced Chern-Pontryagin densites to further descent by two steps.Comment: 50 pages, no figures. Revised and extended final versio

Static BPS 'monopoles' in all even spacetime dimensions

Two families of SO(2n) Higgs models in 2n2n dimensional spacetime are presented. One family arises from the {\it dimensional reduction} of higher dimensional Yang-Mills systems while the construction of the other one is {\it ad hoc}, the n=2n=2 member of each family coinciding with the usual SU(2) Yang-Mills--Higgs system without Higgs potential. All models support BPS 'monopole' solutions. The 'dyons' of the {\it dimensionally descended} models are also BPS, while the electrically charged solutions of the {\it ad hoc} models are not BPS.Comment: 15 pages, 3 figure

Instantonic dyons of Yang-Mills--Chern-Simons models in d=2n+1 dimensions, n>2

We investigate finite energy solutions of Yang-Mills--Chern-Simons systems in odd spacetime dimensions, d=2n+1, with n>2. This can be carried out systematically for all n, but the cases n=3,4 corresponding to a 7,8 dimensional spacetime are treated concretely. These are static and spherically symmetric configurations, defined in a flat Minkowski background. The value of the electric charge is fixed by the Chern-Simons coupling constant.Comment: 15 pages, 4 figure

Higgs- and Skyrme-Chern-Simons densities in all dimensions

    Get PDF
Two types of new Chern-Simons (CS) densities, both defined in all odd and even dimensions, are proposed. These new CS densities feature a scalar field interacting with a scalar. In one case this is a Higgs scalar while in the other it is a Skyrme scalar. The motivation is to study the effects of adding these new CS terms to a Lagrangian which supports static soliton solutions prior to their introduction.Comment: 20 pages, no figure

Towards a Coulomb gas of instantons in the SO(4)xU(1) Higgs model on R_4

    Get PDF
The SO(4)×U(1)SO(4)\times U(1) Higgs model on R4\R_4 is extended by a F3F^3 term so that the action receives a nonvanishing contribution from the interactions of 2-instantons and 3-instantons, and can be expressed as the inverse of the Laplacian on R4\R_4 in terms of the mutual distances of the instantons. The one-instanton solutions of both the basic and the extended models have been studied in detail numerically.Comment: 29 pages LaTeX, 4 Figures available from authors on reques
