I=3/2 Scattering in the Nonrelativisitic Quark Potential Model
We study elastic scattering to Born order using
nonrelativistic quark wavefunctions in a constituent-exchange model. This
channel is ideal for the study of nonresonant meson-meson scattering amplitudes
since s-channel resonances do not contribute significantly. Standard quark
model parameters yield good agreement with the measured S- and P-wave phase
shifts and with PCAC calculations of the scattering length. The P-wave phase
shift is especially interesting because it is nonzero solely due to
symmetry breaking effects, and is found to be in good agreement with experiment
given conventional values for the strange and nonstrange constituent quark

Optimization of the Strength-Fracture Toughness Relation in Particulate-Reinforced Aluminum Composites via Control of the Matrix Microstructure

aluminum alloy 6092-matrix composite has been studied as a function of postfabrication
processing and heat treatment. It is demonstrated that, by the control of particulate distribution, matrix
grain, and substructure and of the matrix precipitate state, the strength-toughness combination in the
composite can be optimized over a wide range of properties, without resorting to unstable, underaged
(UA) matrix microstructures, which are usually deemed necessary to produce a higher fracture toughness
than that displayed in the peak-aged condition. Further, it is demonstrated that, following an
appropriate combination of thermomechanical processing and unconventional heat treatment, the
composite may possess better stiffness, strength, and fracture toughness than a similar unreinforced
alloy. In the high- and low-strength matrix microstructural conditions, the matrix grain and substructure
were found to play a substantial role in determining fracture properties. However, in the intermediate-
strength regime, properties appeared to be optimizable by the utilization of heat treatments
only. These observations are rationalized on the basis of current understanding of the grain size
dependence of fracture toughness and the detailed microstructural features resulting from thermomechanical

Lichenometric dating (lichenometry) and the biology of the lichen genus rhizocarpon:challenges and future directions
Lichenometric dating (lichenometry) involves the use of lichen measurements to estimate the age of exposure of various substrata. Because of low radial growth rates and considerable longevity, species of the crustose lichen genus Rhizocarpon have been the most useful in lichenometry. The primary assumption of lichenometry is that colonization, growth and mortality of Rhizocarpon are similar on surfaces of known and unknown age so that the largest thalli present on the respective faces are of comparable age. This review describes the current state of knowledge regarding the biology of Rhizocarpon and considers two main questions: (1) to what extent does existing knowledge support this assumption; and (2) what further biological observations would be useful both to test its validity and to improve the accuracy of lichenometric dates? A review of the Rhizocarpon literature identified gaps in knowledge regarding early development, the growth rate/size curve, mortality, regeneration, competitive effects, colonization, and succession on rock surfaces. The data suggest that these processes may not be comparable on different rock surfaces, especially in regions where growth rates and thallus turnover are high. In addition, several variables could differ between rock surfaces and influence maximum thallus size, including rate and timing of colonization, radial growth rates, environmental differences, thallus fusion, allelopathy, thallus mortality, colonization and competition. Comparative measurements of these variables on surfaces of known and unknown age may help to determine whether the basic assumptions of lichenometry are valid. Ultimately, it may be possible to take these differences into account when interpreting estimated dates

Factors Associated with Revision Surgery after Internal Fixation of Hip Fractures
Background: Femoral neck fractures are associated with high rates of revision surgery after management with internal fixation. Using data from the Fixation using Alternative Implants for the Treatment of Hip fractures (FAITH) trial evaluating methods of internal fixation in patients with femoral neck fractures, we investigated associations between baseline and surgical factors and the need for revision surgery to promote healing, relieve pain, treat infection or improve function over 24 months postsurgery. Additionally, we investigated factors associated with (1) hardware removal and (2) implant exchange from cancellous screws (CS) or sliding hip screw (SHS) to total hip arthroplasty, hemiarthroplasty, or another internal fixation device. Methods: We identified 15 potential factors a priori that may be associated with revision surgery, 7 with hardware removal, and 14 with implant exchange. We used multivariable Cox proportional hazards analyses in our investigation. Forging alliances: Coffee grower and chain leader partnerships to improve productivity and coffee quality in Papua New Guinea

Partnership discourse is making advances in development dialogue as a means to improve the livelihoods of the agrarian populace. In Papua New Guinea, productive partnerships flourished during the early growth of the coffee industry. After the demise of plantations and rural mills in the lead up to political independence, the support services that plantations used to provide to smallholders, including centralised processing, have ceased as have price incentives for quality. Consequently, smallholders began to produce coffee of inconsistent quality and their productivity has also declined. However, coffee value chain partnerships have the potential to reverse the present decline of coffee production and increase the productivity of coffee farmers and address the inconsistency and the supply of low-grade coffee. Using two case studies of farmer cooperatives, we investigate collective action and also assess partnerships among present value chain actors. The case studies were supported with interviews of value chain actors to gain further insights into partnerships with farmer groups. This paper illustrates that through collective action and partnerships, coffee farmers can improve coffee production and quality, enhance governance systems in grower groups, attract community development services and diversify into other entrepreneurial activities
