Forging Ahead and Adapting to Change: a Review of the Initiatives of the ISPRS Student Consortium
The International Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing Student Consortium (ISPRS SC) is an international organization that represents a constituency of the students and the young professionals with common interests and goals within ISPRS in the areas of photogrammetry, remote sensing and spatial information science. The ISPRS SC Board of Directors strengthened the organization’s foundations and increased its engagement in the Society from 2016 to 2022. Given the current global health crisis, selected members of the Board of Directors continued to serve in the ISPRS SC for a two-year extension and developed creative strategies in navigating the new normal. Building on the strengths of the organization and motivated by the incredible ideas of connecting and engaging the scientific community that emerged during the pandemic, we were able to transform challenges into opportunities through collaborations and sustained participation of our members. In this paper, we summarize all the activities of the Consortium from 2016 to 2022 and provide insights on the impacts and values of these initiatives to the organization and its members. We also elaborated on hosting the GeoMixers as virtual networking events with our partner organizations as well as organizing the virtual Google Earth Engine meetup in the Singapore Geospatial Festival, which was given the short title, EarthEngine@SG. Outcomes of the Leadership and Service Mentoring Programme, the Consortium’s first mentorship and training programme for potential nominees for the incoming Board of Directors, demonstrated the remarkable potential of the youth in leading and engaging in relevant social and global issues and contributing to the scientific community. Sustaining our relevance to ISPRS, experiencing growth during the pandemic and understanding our roles as an international organization, the Consortium will continue to forge ahead and adapt to change to support the youth and contribute to building resilience and adaptability in our scientific community
Effects of Gamma Irradiation on Curcumin
In this study, remnants concentrations of curcumin in Curcuma longa (organic turmeric powder) were determined after it was exposed to irradiation doses of 1, 2 and 3 kGy. Curcumin analysis was performed using the analyte-sensitive impulse differential polarography technique (LOD: 0.621 ppm and LOQ: 2.130 ppm). The results obtained showed a decreasing concentration of curcumin as a function of the irradiation dose. This reduction is low in terms of affecting the product’s quality with respect to its concentration
Surgical treatment of type 2 giant mesenteric cyst: case report and literature review
Mesenteric lesions, including cysts, are rare abdominal tumours and in most cases non-neoplastic. They may have an asymptomatic course or present with pain, abdominal distension or intestinal obstruction. The suggested management is surgical resection of the lesions by laparotomy or minimally invasive surgery. We presented the case of a 48-year-old patient with progressive abdominal distension attributed to liver cirrhosis. Ultrasound and computed tomography of the abdomen showed evidence of a giant cyst of the mesentery with no evidence of tumor activity. We therefore decided to perform an exploratory laparotomy with cystectomy and omentectomy, follow-up and pathology report negative for malignancy
Chilaiditi's sign in complicated acute appendicitis: case report and literature review
Chilaiditi's condition refers to the presence of a loop of small intestine or colon between the diaphragm and the hepatic rim, usually due to alterations in the attachment of the liver to the diaphragm. Chilaiditi syndrome is associated with abdominal pain as the most common clinical manifestation. Pneumoperitoneum should always be ruled out in the context of these patients. We presented the case of a male in his eighth decade of life who presented with data suggestive of drug-modified acute appendicitis, for which computed tomography of the abdomen identified acute appendicitis and Chilaiditi's condition. An open appendectomy was performed without complications and the condition resolved
Soluble interleukin‐6 receptor in young adults and its relationship with body composition and autonomic nervous system
Usporedba djelovanja korionskog gonadotropina konja (eCG) i estradiol cipionata primijenjenih 24 sata nakon prestanka kontrolirane primjene progesterona kao dijela protokola za sinkronizaciju estrusa i umjetno osjemenjivanje meksičkog Criollo goveda.
Two experiments were conducted to evaluate the effect of administering equine chorionic gonadotropin (eCG) in substitution of estradiol, 24 h after the removal of a progesterone intravaginal device, on estrus and ovulatory response, and pregnancy rates of Rodeo Criollo cows (exp. 1, n = 21) and heifers (exp. 2, n = 39) subjected to a synchronization protocol (estradiol + CIDR + PGF2α) with estrus-detected artificial insemination. All females were inseminated 12 h after detected estrus. In cows, estrus and ovulation response, and maximum pre-ovulatory follicle diameter were similar (P>0.05) between equine chorionic gonadotropin and estradiol groups. However, the time to estrus was shorter (P0.05) in ovulation rate.
Inguinal plasty and appendectomy as treatment for Amyand's hernia: case report and literature review
Amyand's hernia is described as the presence of the caecal appendix within the hernial sac of an incarcerated inguinal hernia. It was reported as an incidental finding in 1% of cases and with evidence of appendicitis in 0.1% of cases. The approach involves performing appendectomy and inguinal repair in the same surgical time, depending on the clinical scenario and the surgeon's decisions. We presented the case of a 76-year-old male patient with a diagnosis of Amyand's right inguinal hernia diagnosed during trans-operative right inguinal plasty
Analytical solution of the direct problem of electrical capacitance tomography for two-phase fluid with a circular inclusion
In this article is disclosed a mathematical model to the problem of Electrical Capacitance Tomography (ECT), for the case of a dielectric biphasic fluid with a circular inclusion. We solve the direct problem, which consists in obtaining an analytic expression for the mutual capacitances. The solution of the direct problem will serve to validate any method of inverse problem solution, to calibrate the existing measurement equipment and also to build an adaptive discretization method to solve the inverse problem of the ECT.En este artículo se expone un modelo matemático al problema de la Tomografía de Capacitancia Eléctrica (TCE), para el caso de un fluido bifásico dieléctrico con una inclusión circular.
