A Study of Legal Information Seeking Behaviour to Inform the Design of Electronic Legal Research Tools
Our work is motivated by the desire to support digital library users in ?getting to grips? with electronic resources. More specifically we are motivated by the desire to support users in understanding how to use, and in which situations it is appropriate to use, particular digital library or electronic resources. This work focuses on lawyers as a specific category of user; Callister [5] highlights that lawyers been traditionally regarded as having poor research skills. Electronic research skills are no exception: Howland and Lewis [8] surveyed U.S. law firm librarians to examine the quality and extent of the electronic legal research skills of summer clerks and first-year associates. They found that these graduates were unable to efficiently or effectively research issues that appear routinely in actual legal cases and concluded that they were not efficient or cost-effective users of LexisNexis and Westlaw (the two biggest digital law libraries in terms of case, legislation and journal coverage). This was despite all of the students having received some training on how to use the libraries while in law school. Digital libraries have traditionally been regarded as difficult to use [4] and based on our contextual observations with academic lawyers, digital law libraries such as LexisNexis Professional and Westlaw are no exception. We believe that this difficulty of use contributes to the problems that lawyers face with electronic legal research. Furthermore, we argue that developing better research skills goes hand-inhand with developing an understanding of the electronic environments in which these skills must be practiced. Our current work is focused on gaining a better understanding of legal academics? and professionals? information seeking behaviour when using existing electronic resources. This understanding will then be used to inform the design of user-centred support tools for digital law libraries (and potentially the design of the libraries themselves)
Studying Lawyersâ Information Seeking Behaviour to Inform the Design of Digital Law Libraries
In this paper, we describe our ongoing work which involves examining the information seeking behaviour of legal professionals. This work involves studying the behaviour of both academic and practicing lawyers with the long-term aim of integrating user-centred legal information seeking support into digital law libraries. We report preliminary findings from the initial phase of the study, which comprised a series of semistructured interviews and naturalistic observations of academic law students looking for information that they require for their work. This group of academic lawyers often found it difficult to find the information that they were looking for when using digital law libraries. A potential symptom of this difficulty was that hazy and incorrect knowledge of the digital library system and information sources within the system were rife. This suggests the need for students to understand more about the digital library systems that they use (within-systems knowledge). We also found that although this group of academic lawyers often used several electronic resources in a complementary fashion to conduct legal information seeking, they often chose to rely primarily on one of either the LexisNexis or Westlaw digital law library platforms. Their preference was often based upon vague or sometimes flawed rationale and suggests the need for students to appreciate the situations in which different electronic resources might be useful (between-systems knowledge)
How technology supporting daily habits could help women remember oral contraception
Non-adherence to oral contraception regimens can have serious consequences: oral contraception misuse or discontinuation is often caused by forgetfulness, and results in over 1 million unwanted pregnancies in the US each year. Due to its simplicity and habitual nature, taking the Pill can be easily incorporated into a daily routine. However, technology-based interventions aimed at improving adherence only focus on just-in-time reminders and taking the Pill at a specified time; the routine aspect of the task is neglected. We argue that technology that facilitates the creation of sustainable habits and supports women when their routine changes could reduce forgetfulness and would be more effective at reducing non-adherence than existing reminder-based solutions
Trusted teammates: Commercial digital games can be effective trust-building tools
Trust is a key component of high functioning virtual work teams. This study investigates the effectiveness of a commercial digital game in developing trust in virtual teams compared to a typical virtual team icebreaker. To achieve this, we outline important trust-building aspects that a game must have and identify the commercial digital game Spaceteam as a suitable candidate. Our results show that Spaceteam is more effective at developing trust in virtual teams compared to social icebreaker, indicated by differences in trusting behaviour. We did not find differences in perception of team trust or moderating effects of dispositional trust. Our findings suggest that digital games with trust-building aspects enable the verification of early trusting beliefs through gameplay, which in turn develops trust among team members. As these games are robust against individual differences in dispositional trust, it is applicable across any team composition. Our findings support the use of digital games as viable trust-building tools for virtual work teams
Scholarsâ research-related personal information collections: A study of education and health researchers in a Kuwaiti University
Purpose
The aim of the paper is to explore the character of scholarsâ research-related personal information
collections (PICs).
Design/methodology/approach
The study was based on in-depth interviews and office tours of 17 scholars in Education and Health
Sciences in a Kuwaiti Higher Education Institution.
Findings
Scholarsâ research-related PICs were added to throughout the research life-cycle. They were huge,
diverse, hybrid and fragmented. Key factors shaping the collections were the pressure to do
research, time pressure in general, quality of space available, technology opportunity, lack of
support from central services, the need to collect Arabic material, self-presentation and selfmanagement.
Older scholars and non-Kuwaiti nationals experienced the pressures slightly
differently.
Research limitations/implications
The study was limited to scholars in two disciplines, in one institution in a developing world context.
However the models produced are suggestive of factors involved in shaping of the research-related
PICs of scholars in general.
Practical implications
Failures in Personal Information Management are a cause for concern in terms of data integrity and
validity of research. Interventions could include training of early career researchers for a life time of
collecting.
Originality/value
This is the first study to examine the contents of scholarsâ research-related PICs and to provide a
model of factors shaping them

Batching, Error Checking and Data Collecting: Understanding Data Entry in a Financial Office
Data entry is a core computing activity performed by office workers every day. Prior research on this topic has tended to study data entry in controlled lab environments. In this paper, we interviewed nine financial administrators from two large universities to learn about their practices for conducting data entry work. We found that financial information often has to be retrieved from multiple electronic and paper sources, and involves briefly keeping items in memory when switching between sources. Interviewees reported that they batched a lot of data entry tasks into a single session to complete the work quickly, and mitigated the risk of data entry errors by time-consuming practices of double-checking. However, prior lab studies suggest that double-checking is a poor strategy as it takes time and people are poor at spotting errors. This work has implications for how future data entry research should be conducted
Diminished Control in Crowdsourcing: An Investigation of Crowdworker Multitasking Behavior
Obtaining high-quality data from crowds can be difficult if contributors do not give tasks sufficient attention. Attention checks are often used to mitigate this problem, but, because the roots of inattention are poorly understood, checks often compel attentive contributors to complete unnecessary work. We investigated a potential source of inattentiveness during crowdwork: multitasking. We found that workers switched to other tasks every five minutes, on average. There were indications that increasing switch frequency negatively affected performance. To address this, we tested an intervention that encouraged workers to stay focused on our task after multitasking was detected. We found that our intervention reduced the frequency of task-switching. It also improves on existing attention checks because it does not place additional demands on workers who are already focused. Our approach shows that crowds can help to overcome some of the limitations of laboratory studies by affording access to naturalistic multitasking behavior
