Space-time properties of the higher twist amplitudes
A consistent and intuitive description of the twist-4 corrections to the
hadron structure functions is presented in a QCD-improved parton model using
time-ordered perturbative theory, where the collinear singularities are
naturally eliminated. We identify the special propagators with the backward
propagators of partons in time order.Comment: 18 Pages, Latex, 8 Ps figures, To appear in Phys. Rev.
Quark and Gluon Orbital Angular Momentum and Spin in Hard Processes
We suggest a method of constructing gauge invariant quark and gluon
distributions that describe an abstract QCD observable and apply this method to
analyze angular momentum of a hadron. In addition to the known quark and gluon
polarized structure functions, we obtain gauge invariant distributions for
quark and gluon orbital angular momenta, and consider some basic properties of
these distributions and their moments.Comment: 16 pages, no figures, RevTe
Double transverse spin asymmetries in vector boson production
We investigate a helicity non-flip double transverse spin asymmetry in vector
boson production in hadron-hadron scattering, which was first considered by
Ralston and Soper at the tree level. It does not involve transversity functions
and in principle also arises in W-boson production for which we present the
expressions. The asymmetry requires observing the transverse momentum of the
vector boson, but it is not suppressed by explicit inverse powers of a large
energy scale. However, as we will show, inclusion of Sudakov factors causes
suppression of the asymmetry, which increases with energy. Moreover, the
asymmetry is shown to be approximately proportional to x_1 g_1(x_1) x_2 \bar
g_1(x_2), which gives rise to additional suppression at small values of the
light cone momentum fractions. This implies that it is negligible for Z or W
production and is mainly of interest for \gamma^* at low energies. We also
compare the asymmetry with other types of double transverse spin asymmetries
and discuss how to disentangle them.Comment: 12 pages, Revtex, 2 Postscript figures, uses aps.sty, epsf.sty;

Accessing transversity with interference fragmentation functions
We discuss in detail the option to access the transversity distribution
function by utilizing the analyzing power of interference
fragmentation functions in two-pion production inside the same current jet. The
transverse polarization of the fragmenting quark is related to the transverse
component of the relative momentum of the hadron pair via a new azimuthal
angle. As a specific example, we spell out thoroughly the way to extract
from a measured single spin asymmetry in two-pion inclusive
lepton-nucleon scattering. To estimate the sizes of observable effects we
employ a spectator model for the fragmentation functions. The resulting
asymmetry of our example is discussed as arising in different scenarios for the
transversity.Comment: 17 pages, 15 figures in .eps format included, typesetted in RevTeX

Heavy Quark Fragmentation into Heavy Mesons
We present a QCD based interpretation of heavy quark fragmentation which
utilizes the heavy quark mass expansion. By distinguishing between perturbative
and non-perturbative QCD effects, we show how to reliably extract mass
independent parameters characterizing the fragmentation function. Because these
parameters are quark mass independent, this procedure should permit tests of
heavy quark symmetry. Furthermore, we show that heavy quark mass corrections
vanish at order in QCD. There also exist higher twist corrections of
order and
which we relate to the leading twist fragmentation function.Comment: 36 pages (Plain TeX with a PostScript figure appended at end), MIT

Two-hadron semi-inclusive production including subleading twist
We extend the analysis of two-hadron fragmentation functions to the
subleading twist, discussing also the issue of color gauge invariance. Our
results can be used anywhere two unpolarized hadrons are semi-inclusively
produced in the same fragmentation region, also at moderate values of the hard
scale Q. Here, we consider the example of polarized deep-inelastic production
of two hadrons and we give a complete list of cross sections and spin
asymmetries up to subleading twist. Among the results, we highlight the
possibility of extracting the transversity distribution with longitudinally
polarized targets and also the twist-3 distribution e(x), which is related to
the pion-nucleon sigma term and to the strangeness content of the nucleon.Comment: 16 pages, RevTeX4, 5 figures, revised notation of several formulae,

Semi-inclusive vector meson production in DIS
We analyze one-particle inclusive DIS in the case when a spin-1 hadron (such
as a vector meson) is observed in the final state. We consider only leading
order contributions in 1/Q, but we include transverse momentum of partons.
Several new fragmentation functions appear in cross sections. One of them can
be measured in connection with the transverse-spin disbtribution function h_1.Comment: 3 pages, uses sprocl.sty, talk given at the DIS2000 conference,

Probing Quark Fragmentation Functions for Spin-1/2 Baryon Production in Unpolarized Annihilation
We study the measurement of the quark fragmentation functions for spin-1/2
baryon production ( and , in particular) in unpolarized
annihilation. The spin-dependent fragmentation functions
and can be probed in the process as a result of quark-antiquark
spin correlation and the weak decay of the baryons. The relevant cross section
is expressed as a product of the two-jet cross-section, the fragmentation
functions, and the differential width of the hyperon decay.Comment: 17 pages, ReVTeX with (1 figure available from authors), MIT-CTP:

What can break the Wandzura--Wilczek relation?
We analyze the breaking of the Wandzura-Wilczek relation for the g_2
structure function, emphasizing its connection with transverse momentum
dependent parton distribution functions. We find that the relation is broken by
two distinct twist-3 terms, and clarify how these can be separated in
measurements of double-spin asymmetries in semi-inclusive deep inelastic
scattering. Through a quantitative analysis of available g_2 data we also show
that the breaking of the Wandzura-Wilczek relation can be as large as 15-30% of
the size of g_2.Comment: 12 page
