Barium in twilight zone suspended matter as a potential proxy for particulate organic carbon remineralization : results for the North Pacific

contrasting environments in the North Pacific: the oligotrophic ALOHA site (22°45'
N 158°W; Hawaii; studied during June–July 2004) and the mesotrophic Subarctic
Pacific K2 site (47°N, 161°W; studied during July-August 2005). Earlier work has
shown that non-lithogenic, excess particulate Ba (Baxs) in the mesopelagic water
column is a potential proxy of organic carbon remineralization. In general Baxs
contents were significantly larger at K2 than at ALOHA. At ALOHA the Baxs profiles
from repeated sampling (5 casts) showed remarkable consistency over a period of
three weeks, suggesting that the system was close to being at steady state. In contrast,
more variability was observed at K2 (6 casts sampled) reflecting the more dynamic
physical and biological conditions prevailing in this environment. While for both sites
Baxs concentrations increased with depth, at K2 a clear maximum was present
between the base of the mixed layer at around 50m and 500m, reflecting production
and release of Baxs. Larger mesopelagic Baxs contents and larger bacterial production
in the twilight zone at the K2 site indicate that more material was exported from the
upper mixed layer for bacterial degradation deeper, compared to the ALOHA site.
Furthermore, application of a published transfer function (Dehairs et al., 1997)
relating oxygen consumption to the observed Baxs data indicated that the latter were in
good agreement with bacterial respiration, calculated from bacterial production. These
results corroborate earlier findings highlighting the potential of Baxs as a proxy for
organic carbon remineralization.
The range of POC remineralization rates calculated from twilight zone excess
particulate Ba contents did also compare well with the depth dependent POC flux
decrease as recorded by neutrally buoyant sediment traps, except in 1 case (out of 4).
This discrepancy could indicate that differences in sinking velocities cause an

uncoupling of the processes occurring in the fine suspended particle pool from those
affecting the larger particle pool which sustains the vertical flux, thus rendering
comparison between both approaches risky.This research was supported by Federal Science Policy

Age at first birth in women is genetically associated with increased risk of schizophrenia
Prof. Paunio on PGC:n jäsenPrevious studies have shown an increased risk for mental health problems in children born to both younger and older parents compared to children of average-aged parents. We previously used a novel design to reveal a latent mechanism of genetic association between schizophrenia and age at first birth in women (AFB). Here, we use independent data from the UK Biobank (N = 38,892) to replicate the finding of an association between predicted genetic risk of schizophrenia and AFB in women, and to estimate the genetic correlation between schizophrenia and AFB in women stratified into younger and older groups. We find evidence for an association between predicted genetic risk of schizophrenia and AFB in women (P-value = 1.12E-05), and we show genetic heterogeneity between younger and older AFB groups (P-value = 3.45E-03). The genetic correlation between schizophrenia and AFB in the younger AFB group is -0.16 (SE = 0.04) while that between schizophrenia and AFB in the older AFB group is 0.14 (SE = 0.08). Our results suggest that early, and perhaps also late, age at first birth in women is associated with increased genetic risk for schizophrenia in the UK Biobank sample. These findings contribute new insights into factors contributing to the complex bio-social risk architecture underpinning the association between parental age and offspring mental health.Peer reviewe
Genome-Wide Association Study in BRCA1 Mutation Carriers Identifies Novel Loci Associated with Breast and Ovarian Cancer Risk
BRCA1-associated breast and ovarian cancer risks can be modified by common genetic variants. To identify further cancer risk-modifying loci, we performed a multi-stage GWAS of 11,705 BRCA1 carriers (of whom 5,920 were diagnosed with breast and 1,839 were diagnosed with ovarian cancer), with a further replication in an additional sample of 2,646 BRCA1 carriers. We identified a novel breast cancer risk modifier locus at 1q32 for BRCA1 carriers (rs2290854, P = 2.7Ă—10-8, HR = 1.14, 95% CI: 1.09-1.20). In addition, we identified two novel ovarian cancer risk modifier loci: 17q21.31 (rs17631303, P = 1.4Ă—10-8, HR = 1.27, 95% CI: 1.17-1.38) and 4q32.3 (rs4691139, P = 3.4Ă—10-8, HR = 1.20, 95% CI: 1.17-1.38). Efficacy and Safety of Three Antiretroviral Regimens for Initial Treatment of HIV-1: A Randomized Clinical Trial in Diverse Multinational Settings
Background:Antiretroviral regimens with simplified dosing and better safety are needed to maximize the efficiency of antiretroviral delivery in resource-limited settings. We investigated the efficacy and safety of antiretroviral regimens with once-daily compared to twice-daily dosing in diverse areas of the world.Methods and Findings:1,571 HIV-1-infected persons (47% women) from nine countries in four continents were assigned with equal probability to open-label antiretroviral therapy with efavirenz plus lamivudine-zidovudine (EFV+3TC-ZDV), atazanavir plus didanosine-EC plus emtricitabine (ATV+DDI+FTC), or efavirenz plus emtricitabine-tenofovir-disoproxil fumarate (DF) (EFV+FTC-TDF). ATV+DDI+FTC and EFV+FTC-TDF were hypothesized to be non-inferior to EFV+3TC-ZDV if the upper one-sided 95% confidence bound for the hazard ratio (HR) was ≤1.35 when 30% of participants had treatment failure.An independent monitoring board recommended stopping study follow-up prior to accumulation of 472 treatment failures. Comparing EFV+FTC-TDF to EFV+3TC-ZDV, during a median 184 wk of follow-up there were 95 treatment failures (18%) among 526 participants versus 98 failures among 519 participants (19%; HR 0.95, 95% CI 0.72-1.27; p = 0.74). Safety endpoints occurred in 243 (46%) participants assigned to EFV+FTC-TDF versus 313 (60%) assigned to EFV+3TC-ZDV (HR 0.64, CI 0.54-0.76; p<0.001) and there was a significant interaction between sex and regimen safety (HR 0.50, CI 0.39-0.64 for women; HR 0.79, CI 0.62-1.00 for men; p = 0.01). Comparing ATV+DDI+FTC to EFV+3TC-ZDV, during a median follow-up of 81 wk there were 108 failures (21%) among 526 participants assigned to ATV+DDI+FTC and 76 (15%) among 519 participants assigned to EFV+3TC-ZDV (HR 1.51, CI 1.12-2.04; p = 0.007).Conclusion: EFV+FTC-TDF had similar high efficacy compared to EFV+3TC-ZDV in this trial population, recruited in diverse multinational settings. Superior safety, especially in HIV-1-infected women, and once-daily dosing of EFV+FTC-TDF are advantageous for use of this regimen for initial treatment of HIV-1 infection in resource-limited countries. ATV+DDI+FTC had inferior efficacy and is not recommended as an initial antiretroviral regimen.Trial Registration:http://www.ClinicalTrials.gov NCT00084136
Sexual and gender prejudice among adolescents and enacted stigma at school
Sexual and gender prejudice refer, respectively, to negative attitudes based on sexual orientation or gender identity or expression; enacted stigma is the behavioral expression of such attitudes. This thesis explored the possible antecedents and outcomes of enacted sexual and gender stigma in secondary school environments, as well as secondary school teachers’ perceptions of enacted sexual and gender stigma. Specific aims and research questions were addressed through a systematic literature review and a series of analytic, empirical studies. Systematic review of previous research in this area demonstrated that enacted sexual and gender stigma is associated with a diminished sense of school belonging, disruptions in educational trajectories, depression, traumatic stress, and other negative outcomes in targeted youth. Findings from survey research with adolescents suggested that their attitudes toward sexual and gender minorities have multiple correlates and possible determinants: personal characteristics such as gender, ethnicity, religiosity, and sexual attractions; social contact with lesbians and gays; attitudes toward gender non-conformity; and beliefs about lesbians and gay men. Findings from survey research with teachers showed that those who were more confident in their abilities to intervene successfully and who had stronger beliefs that intervening in the situation would produce a positive outcome had the strongest intentions to intervene in scenarios involving the bullying of sexual and gender minority students. Implications of the findings for interventions to improve the health status of sexual and gender minority youth, addressing sexual and gender prejudice, and supporting school personnel in responding to enacted sexual and gender stigma are discussed
Understanding teachers' responses to enactments of sexual and gender stigma at school
Although teachers may be in a position to address enactments of sexual and gender stigma among their students, little is known about their motivations to intervene in such situations. We surveyed secondary school teachers in the Netherlands, assessing how beliefs, norms, and self-efficacy were related to their intentions to intervene in two hypothetical situations that involved bullying of lesbian/gay or gender non-conforming students. We found significantly stronger intentions to intervene among teachers who were more confident in their abilities to intervene successfully and who had stronger beliefs that intervening in the situation would produce a positive outcome
