The study examined the effects of two methods of processing de-hulled sunflower seed meal (SFM) from the same batch of sunflower seeds. Sunflower seed meal was fed to broilers as meal (MSFM) or after it had been pelleted (PSFM) at 75 °C and 360 kPa pressure to pass through a 3 mm mesh. Three diets were prepared, namely a balancer feed (BF) and two diets containing 200 g/kg MSFM or 200 g/kg PSFM. They were fed to 30 pens (two birds each) with male Ross 308 broilers, from 8 to 21 days old, following randomization. Data were analysed by ANOVA. Two pre-planned orthogonal contrast tests were performed to compare overall differences between the diets containing SFM and BF and between diets containing the MSFM and PSFM. The BF had a very different nutrient composition from the complete feeds containing SFM so, as expected, there were differences in growth performance and nutrient retention. The diet containing PSFM had greater apparent metabolizable energy corrected for N retention (AMEn) and dry matter retention (DMR) than that containing MSFM. The use of the substitution method showed the PSFM had AMEn that was 18% greater than the MSFM (8.79 vs 7.47 MJ/kg DM). Under the conditions of the current study, incorporating PSFM in a mash broiler feed increased dietary AMEn compared with the same feed containing MSFM. Further studies are needed to identify whether the benefits of pre-pelleting SFM remain after this product has been incorporated in complete pelleted broiler feeds

Radiation exposure to the population of Europe following the Chernobyl accident

On the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the Chernobyl accident an attempt has been made to evaluate the impact of the Chernobyl accident on the global burden of human cancer in Europe. This required the estimation of radiation doses in each of the 40 European countries. Dose estimation was based on the analysis and compilation of data either published in the scientific literature or provided by local experts. Considerable variability has been observed in exposure levels among the European populations. The average individual doses to the thyroid from the intake of 131I for children aged 1 y were found to vary from ∼0.01 mGy in Portugal up to 750 mGy in Gomel Oblast (Belarus). Thyroid doses to adults were consistently lower than the doses received by young children. The average individual effective doses from external exposure and ingestion of long-lived radiocaesium accrued in the period 1986-2005 varied from ∼0 in Portugal to ∼10 mSv in Gomel Oblast (Belarus) and Bryansk Oblast (Russia). The uncertainties in the dose estimates were subjectively estimated on the basis of the availability and reliability of the radiation data that were used for dose reconstruction in each countr

The effects of de-hulled sunflower seed meal (SFM) samples with different crude protein (CP) and non-starch polysaccharide (NSP) content on apparent metabolizable energy (AME), AME metabolizability (EM) and pre-caecal protein digestibility (pcPD) were examined. The birds were fed one of four mash diets. On a per kilogram basis, the basal diet (BD) contained as major ingredients 549.5 g wheat, 150 g soybean meal and 175 g full fat soybean meal as well as 215.4 g crude protein kg–1 and 12.81 MJ AME kg–1. Another three diets containing 200 g kg–1 of each of three experimental SFM samples in place of the BD were also mixed. Each diet was fed to birds in ten pens with two male Ross 308 broilers ranging in age from 8 to 21 days. Dietary AME was determined from excreta collection between days 17 and 21, while AME, EM and pcPD were determined when the birds were 21 days old. The substitutional method was used to determine AME, EM and pcPD in the SFM samples. The SFM samples high in NSP had lower AME (P = 0.001), EM (P < 0.001) and pcPD (P = 0.005). The beneficial effect of carrying out a further de-hulling of SFM seems to be mediated through reduced NSP content and improved energy and protein bioavailability

Precision measurement of charged pion and kaon differential cross sections in electron-positron annihilation at Q = 10.52 GeV

Measurements of inclusive differential cross sections for charged pion and kaon production in electron-positron annihilation have been carried out at a center-of-mass energy of Q = 10.52 GeV. The measurements were performed with the Belle detector at the KEKB electron-positron collider using a data sample containing 113 million e+e- -> qqbar events, where q={u,d,s,c}. We present charge-integrated differential cross sections d\sigma_h+-/dz for h+- = pi+-, K+- as a function of the relative hadron energy z = 2*E_h / sqrt{s} from 0.2 to 0.98. The combined statistical and systematic uncertainties for pi+- (K+-) are 4% (4%) at z ~ 0.6 and 15% (24%) at z ~ 0.9. The cross sections are the first measurements of the z-dependence of pion and kaon production for z > 0.7 as well as the first precision cross section measurements at a center-of-mass energy far below the Z^0 resonance used by the experiments at LEP and SLC.Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures. We report the first double differential cross sections of two charged pions and kaons (e+ehhXe^+e^- \rightarrow hhX) in electron-positron annihilation as a function of the fractional energies of the two hadrons for any charge and hadron combination. The dependence of these di-hadron cross sections on the topology (same, opposite-hemisphere or anywhere) is also studied with the help of the event shape variable thrust and its axis. The ratios of these di-hadron cross sections for different charges and hadron combinations directly shed light on the contributing fragmentation functions. For example, we find that the ratio of same-sign pion pairs over opposite-sign pion pairs drops toward higher fractional energies where disfavored fragmentation is expected to be suppressed. These di-hadron results are obtained from a 655fb1655\,{\rm fb}^{-1} data sample collected near the Υ(4S)\Upsilon(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+ee^+ e^- collider. Extending the previously published single-pion and single-kaon cross sections, single-proton (e+epXe^+e^- \rightarrow pX) cross sections are extracted from a 159fb1159\,{\rm fb}^{-1} data sub-sample.Comment: submitted to PR

Measurement of e+eγχcJe^+e^- \to \gamma\chi_{cJ} via initial state radiation at Belle

The process e+eγχcJe^+e^- \to \gamma\chi_{cJ} (JJ=1, 2) is studied via initial state radiation using 980 fb1^{-1} of data at and around the Υ(nS)\Upsilon(nS) (nn=1, 2, 3, 4, 5) resonances collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+ee^+e^- collider. No significant signal is observed except from ψ(2S)\psi(2S) decays. Upper limits on the cross sections between s=3.80\sqrt{s}=3.80 and 5.56 GeV5.56~{\rm GeV} are determined at the 90% credibility level, which range from few pb to a few tens of pb. We also set upper limits on the decay rate of the vector charmonium [ψ(4040\psi(4040), ψ(4160)\psi(4160), and ψ(4415)\psi(4415)] and charmoniumlike [Y(4260)Y(4260), Y(4360)Y(4360), and Y(4660)Y(4660)] states to γχcJ\gamma\chi_{cJ}.Comment: Accepted by PR

We report a measurement of the differential cross section of π0\pi^0 pair production in single-tag two-photon collisions, γγπ0π0\gamma^* \gamma \to \pi^0 \pi^0, in e+ee^+ e^- scattering. The cross section is measured for Q2Q^2 up to 30 GeV2^2, where Q2Q^2 is the negative of the invariant mass squared of the tagged photon, in the kinematic range 0.5 GeV < W < 2.1 GeV and cosθ|\cos \theta^*| < 1.0 for the total energy and pion scattering angle, respectively, in the γγ\gamma^* \gamma center-of-mass system. The results are based on a data sample of 759 fb1^{-1} collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+ee^+ e^- collider. The transition form factor of the f0(980)f_0(980) and that of the f2(1270)f_2(1270) with the helicity-0, -1, and -2 components separately are measured for the first time and are compared with theoretical calculations.Comment: 36 pages, 37 figures, 11 tables, Belle Preprint 2015-15, KEK Preprint 2015-2

    Search for a massive invisible particle X0X^0 in B+e+X0B^{+}\to e^{+}X^{0} and B+μ+X0B^{+}\to \mu^{+}X^{0} decays

We present a search for a non-Standard-Model invisible particle X0X^0 in the mass range 0.1-1.8GeV/c20.1\textrm{-}1.8 \,{\rm GeV}/{c^2} in B+e+X0B^{+}\to e^{+} X^{0} and B+μ+X0B^{+}\to \mu^{+} X^{0} decays. The results are obtained from a 711 fb1711~{\rm fb}^{-1} data sample that corresponds to 772×106BBˉ772 \times 10^{6} B\bar{B} pairs, collected at the Υ(4S)\Upsilon(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB e+ee^+ e^- collider. One BB meson is fully reconstructed in a hadronic mode to determine the momentum of the lepton of the signal decay in the rest frame of the recoiling partner BB meson. We find no evidence of a signal and set upper limits on the order of 10610^{-6}.Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures, 3 table
