    EFFECT OF THEFT AND MUTILATION ON THE USE OF LIBRARY COLLECTION IN AN ACADEMIC LIBRARY IN LAGOS STATE

    This study examines effect of theft and mutilation on the use of library collection in an academic library in Lagos State, Nigeria. The total population for this study comprised of 250 undergraduate registered user of university of Lagos library in the 2017/2018 academic session who are constant users of the library. The entire population was sampled using total enumeration sampling technique because of the small and manageable size of the population. Questionnaire was used to collect data from the respondents. Findings from this study revealed among others that the extent of theft and mutilation of library resources in academic libraries in Nigeria is very high, that high cost of books, lack of photocopying machine, porous library security system, lack of electronic security measures, lack of proper monitoring of students, unavailability of online databases among others are factors responsible for theft and mutilation of resources in academic libraries in Nigeria. This study also revealed that theft and mutilation of information resources has lots of negative impact on the entire collection and services of the academic libraries in Nigeria. The following were suggested to improve on ways to curb the menace of theft and mutilation of resources in academic libraries in Nigeria: The library security personnel should be placed in strategic position in the library so that strict compliance to the library rules and regulations would be ensured among the library users; Male and female security personnel should be employed to ensure that a thorough search takes place for both male and female students at the exit of the library; Closed circuit television (CCTV) system should be deployed to the library as the major system of securing the library collection and should be closely monitored by a security minded staff so as to minimize the menace of book theft and mutilation among others

    Job-related Stress and Job Performance among Librarians in University Libraries in Nigeria

    This study investigated the incidence of job-related stress and how it affects job performance of librarians and library officers. Three universities in Lagos State, Nigeria were selected for the study. The study adopted a survey method and questionnaire was used to gather data from 86 librarians and library officers from the university libraries. The study revealed that jobrelated stress is prevalent among the librarians and library officers. It identified lack of opportunity for career development, low salary/compensation, work interference with family time, the absence of training, lack of motivation, lack of co-operation and lack of conducive working environment as factors responsible for job stress. The study further identified low productivity, increased absenteeism, hypertension, job dissatisfaction, frustration, depression and negative job attitude as effects of stress on the job performance of librarians and library officers as consequences of stress. The study concluded that librarians and library officers in Lagos state experienced the stress of exhaustion and burnout resulting from too many routines leading to tiredness and lack of enthusiasm, lack of motivation and frustration. They also experience time-related stresses which include a shortage of time to attend to students with different information needs almost at the same time and time to meet up with publications, The study recommends efficient and effective service delivery in the nation's university libraries, parent institutions should help in reducing sources of stress among library staff in university libraries, among others

    ICT and Digital Literacy Skills: a Mechanism for Efficient Teaching in Nigerian Colleges of Education

    This study examines information communication technology (ICT) and digital literacy skills as mechanism for effective teaching in Nigerian colleges of education. The total population for this study comprises of 1,500 lecturers in four colleges of education in South West Nigeria. 10% was drawn from the total population using a random sampling technique giving a total 150 which form the sample size for the study. Questionnaire was used to collect data from the respondents. Findings from this study revealed among others that that ICT and digital literacy skills when applied will to a very large extent be a tool for efficient teaching aid for lecturers in colleges of education in Nigeria, that computers, printers, photocopiers, projectors, interactive white board/electronic notice board, internet facility and CD Rom will to a very large extent serve as ICT tools that can be used for effective teaching. This study also revealed that most of the lecturers in colleges of education in Nigeria are not proficient in the use of power-point, excel and spreadsheet, cannot apply computers to solve real life academic problems etc. Recommendations were put forward to enhance the use of ICT for efficient teaching in Nigerian colleges of education.Keywords: ICT, Digital Literacy, Digital Literacy Skills, Teaching, Learnin
